A detailed tutorial on how to rescue a blackout when Freediving by 4 x Australian Freediving record holder Adam Stern.
A Blackout when freediving can be fatal if we don't deal with it properly. Though rescuing a blackout is quite easy and this little bit of knowledge could one day save your life or the life of your dive buddy.
Thanks to Mitch Bennett and Bryan Bailey for helping me shoot this video!

I blacked out earlier today in a pool, swimming. I convulsed briefly while my brother held me out of the water (who intuitively did every thing you just explained!). I was really scared, but knowing this is fairly common is a relief. It was my first time. Thank you for your videos and your immense dedication! Happy 2019!

I love the way you presented this video in such a... “lighthearted” manner? If that makes sense. What I mean is that you showed the scenes where the diver woke up and started smiling and laughing, and described the revival process as “bringing the body somewhere that it feels safe enough to wake up”. Although blackouts are undoubtedly capable of hospitalizing people, the most important thing to do in this situation and in freediving in general is to _stay calm_ , and you did a great job of showing that :) Thank you💕

And you videos are a very good trigger for me to start going for free diving courses Thanks again :))

Adam, I just experienced my first blackout while freedive spearfishing, I was ascending from 80 ft and think I ascended a little too quick and lost consciousness after surfacing, Luckily my dive buddy was a few feet away from me and responded immediately, I was only out for about 3 seconds before coming too and stopped diving the rest of the day. Any advice for my next time going out as far as limitations on depth or time? How should one resume freediving after a blackout? Thanks!!

The first freediving rescue instruction i have seen on YT so far. Is it right to put it on public? In Scuba for example you should take a special rescue course. That is ease to make mistakes if you do not have an experience or an instructor around to correct one. And this is a matter of life.
@AdamFreediver
@AdamFreediver 6 жыл бұрын
I believe it's better for as many people as possible to know the technique and so far from my own research the more people know about this kind of stuff the more people take courses so videos like this steer more people to take courses rather than them just watching the video and feeling like they know it all

I used to do Freediving on my own (spearfishing actually) for the same reasons. And only later I understood how dangerous it is. I was playing with fire and likely still alive...My advice to you - find the buddy. Use social media, might be Facebook, make a post that you are looking for another Freediver, ask your friends to repost it...something like that...But don't free dive alone. Where are from? Are you sure there is no freedive/dive school around?
@AdamFreediver
@AdamFreediver 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Jay, yeah it's a tough position to be in. I really do recommend that you find someone to dive with. Social media is great to connect with people and though there may not be a huge freediving community in Pennsylvania I think you'll easily be able to find someone to give it a go with you :)

I have a quick question, you mentioned if the diver has been in a black out for an extended amount of time we use the extreme measure and do rescue breath. In this scenario do we skip BTT altogether and go straight to rescue breath?
@jeromelefloch4945
@jeromelefloch4945 7 жыл бұрын
Very clear reminder, thx a lot. Have you ever seen a blacked out diver trying to breath again through your mouth while underwater? I've been taught to do as well, but I don't see very well how that is useful.

I've been told that the blacked out diver might wake up as you're grabing him/her and taking him/her to the surface. But I don't know how that is relevant. Thanks for your answer anyway, interesting to have your experience on that.

Hi , interesting video . 1) I would like to ask two questions . Is it ill advised for someone who has low blood pressure and has vasoagal syncope on occasion to freedive ? My daughter has been freediving since she was quite young but has had no blackouts in the water . We have just discovered her low blood pressure . 2) is i not important to try to get the person needing revival in a horizontal position so the blood flows to the brain ? Thanks
@AdamFreediver
@AdamFreediver 6 жыл бұрын
hey :) Okay so 1) I honestly can't give any meaningful advice on the topic. You should ask a doctor about it. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. 2) no that isn't needed. The issues isn't blood supply to the brain specifically. The body is waiting to be woken up. It just needs to receive the stimulus that it's in a safe place to do so :)
