I watched this video and just about every other popular video you can imagine on learning to roll my R's, but I still couldn't do it. I practiced intermittently for a couple weeks and still couldn't do it. I started to get really discouraged until one of my friends said that rolling his R feels somewhat like a hiss. I instantly remembered this video and tried it again and it worked almost immediately. Maybe the practice made it possible the second time around. I want people that are discouraged the first time they watch this to revisit it in the future.

@@240kid This tutorial taught me how to initiate the tongue vibration, but after getting a feel for it I had to learn to generate the vibration with much less air pressure and within the structure of different words. I practiced trying to generate the vibration with as little air pressure as possible (breathing in and out with more or less air), but I am not sure if that strategy is recommended or efficient. I often come across words that are difficult to pronounce because the trill sound is surrounded by vowels or consonants in a way that is somewhat distinct from words I already know.

You are so right. I just learned to flap my tongue by making the "hocking loogie" sound and got excited, but when I try to add sound, my tongue gets firm and stops flapping. How do you go from making the tongue flap to adding sound? That is the part I can't quite complete yet.

Great video! When I taught Spanish, there was always at least one student who couldn’t do the RR. I like how you broke it down into steps. We would practice it altogether so no one felt weird. The kids got really loud with it when they gained confidence. A favorite expression when trying it was: RRuffles have RRidges (potato chips).

For those saying they can’t roll their “r” it’s because it takes consistent practice. I used to not be able to do it either but after a year (yes, a year) of trying over and over while learning my Spanish I am finally able to make the trill sound. And it’s still not perfect like a native Spanish speaker but it’s something. Just keep practicing and you’ll get it 👍🏻

A couple of months ago, I was able, with the help of this video, to get the first pedacitos (small pieces) of a trill. Now, after those several months of practice, I'm getting pretty good at it. It's actually happening! Words like alrededor are still difficult, but I'm now actually trilling my Rs . . . la palabra "correcto?" . . . I can trill it every time! I am super grateful for this video. Much thanks.

First time rolling my r's thank you so much for easy steps. Was not expected it to work and it surprised me when I set everything up and did it that I started doing the trill. Now with a little more work I can use it in speaking. Really thanks a million so much easier than anything else I've heard or seen.

Dude. This works. I have never been able to roll my r’s... which, as a singer, is a real hindrance as it’s often expected. I’ve been trying for years, I’ve asked singing teachers to help me, to no avail. I watched the first couple minutes of this video deeply sceptical that this would make any difference, but lo and behold as I practiced along it actually worked- I’m far from perfect or consistent but this is far and away the closest I’ve ever been to rolling my r’s. So grateful!

OMG I FINALLY GOT IT! I NEVER LEARNED THE RIGHT WAY BUT I WANT TO BE A VOICE ACTOR SO THIS WAS A MUST! And upon me saying "How could you do this to me Romeo?" at school (mocking soap operas) I accidentally did it right and I BUMPED UP my practicing routine, and I finally got it! It's been so cringy hacking up loogies every night but tis' the cost of practice! Guys the hocking method seems better to in my opinion! Like he says: just get your tongue to wiggle, and slowly move that sensation to the tip of your tongue. Keep trying! I'm finally getting it! Thank you SOOOOO much! If I'm on a public interview someday for being part of a cool show, I'm bringing you up in a story of how I got my awesome Russian accent down!

I got it!! I was one of the very few girls I knew who could hock a loogie, though I haven't done it for very many years. So, when you described forming "rr" in that way, I totally got it. I am now 64 years old so, after a while, was laughing so hysterically that I kept having to stop and get it together so I could say another word. I have studied Spanish off and on since I was six years old. I grew up in San Diego and traveled frequently to Mexico. I earned a Spanish minor in college 10 years ago. Yet, I have never been able to attain fluency. I am moving to Mexico within the next year and know Spanish immersion will get me fluent, but I'd like to be as fluent as possible before I go. I found your videos and have made amazing progress. I began approaching the language with openness and curiosity rather than as work and memorizing to be accomplished. I'm having so much fun with it! I am taking an online course through The Great Courses, watching your videos and have gotten some of the books you suggested. I read whatever I can in Spanish, including the Spanish version of the user's manuals for everything I buy. Just about everything in my home is labeled and not only do I talk to myself and through everything I do in Spanish, but also talk almost exclusively in Spanish to my cat, Maisie. I even silly talk her in Spanish. She and I will both be fluent when we get to Mexico! TMI? I apologize, but I am so excited and your approach, instructions and tips have been a big part of that. Thank you so much!!

Hi bro, I've never been one to leave comments on KZfaq videos, but I just want to say thank you.As with many other Spanish-as-a-second-language learners, I've spent many years trying to learn the Spanish "rr" sound and have watched countless video tutorials in the process, but to no avail. Today, without any expectations as usual and believing that I am biologically incapable of making the "rr" sound, I stumbled upon your video and followed your "hock a loogie" method, and it freaking WORKED!!!!!!!!! Now I'm even more pumped to continue my quest for mastery of the glorious Spanish language. For those who are still struggling, here's my road to success: Step 1: Follow the "hock-a-loogie" method as described in the video. I felt my tongue vibrating a little, but with low consistency and strength. THEN THE MAGIC HAPPENED. Step 2: I added sounds/tones to it while doing the same thing. This time, the consistency and strength of my "rr" sound improved tremendously. Now I'm gonna try incorporating this method into pronouncing real Spanish words. After all, it is what this skill is really meant for. Once again, thank you bro for changing my life in such a SHORT, SUCCINCT and EFFECTIVE video (unlike most other tutorials on KZfaq which are 10+ minutes long). Thank you! P.S. I am an avid language learner from Hong Kong. Your video, I believe, has changed lives of many whose first language is an Asian language (e.g. Chinese, Japanese, Korean, etc.) whose pronunciation bears little to no resemblance to the Spanish "rr" sound.

Thanks, man! This actually helped me, unlike the other videos I've watched on how to roll your r's. I can't do it perfectly, but I'm slowly getting there. The thing is, I'm not trying to learn some new language or something. My native language requires me to roll my r's & I've always been mocked for not being able to speak correctly in my own language. Soon I'll be able to, tho
6 жыл бұрын
M A F I A BOSS You can do it. no one ever starts off as a pro unless you're Mozart haha. keep practicing and it'll become second nature. I'm so glad that i can help. what is your native language? And I know how it feels to be made fun of in your own language.. That's partially why I learned Spanish. I have a slight lisp and I talk really fast in English. Spanish is way more suitable for me, so I get it. Good luck to you. I have a another "r" vs "rr" video coming out soon so be sure to subscribe. God bless.

Ricky. As usual, this was an excellent vid. One great suggestion I was given when I started to learn how to sound my erre more natively was to keep the tip of the toungue at the top of the mouth at the ridge beind the front teeth as the sound was being pronunced. Eventhough it requires more action than that to perfect the trill sound, it was very helpful remembering the tongue position when saying words containing rr. One request, can you create more vids for intermeidate to advanced speakers? I am impressed with your ability to speak as fluidly and rapidly as you do. At the moment I seem to be stuck between the intermediate to advanced stage. Last, your suggestion of pratcing trabalenguas I found very helpful in improving my diction, but I still can't seem to completely move beyond the intermediate stage. Did you run into this issue as you learned? At this moment I have been learning intensively for approx. 10 months. Thanks and my apologies for the long post.

dwaynemott never apologize for long comments lol. It's all good. and yes, I have been stuck before.. Or at least I felt stuck. Ink if you saw my video on the "Fun ways to keep learning Spanish" but that may give you done more study ideas. Other than that, You have to make sure that you are SOLID on the stuff you have already learned. If you have that squared away then you should move on to more vocabulary, and and other tenses. And yes I can make more videos for intermediate and advanced learners. I actually would love to do so much more, but I'm limited due to work and family. bare with me though.
