My hostfather from Sweden used to say "natti natt" instead of "god natt". I think it sounds really nice :)

I love the Douglass Adams reference :D Of all my Swedish learning sources, yours is the one where I get the most real modern conversational stuff.

I'm glad you caught it! The lack of "natural language" resources was the reason I started this project in the first place.

For a Germanic language, modern Swedish vocabulary has a surprising amount of French and Latin influenced words like gratis, adjö, biljetter, and so on. Do you happen to know why is that?
@minirop

In the 18th century, French (language and culture) had influence. For instance king Gustave III received French education and several nobles studied in France. (fixed)

This is the correct answer. Gustav III was a personal friend of Louis XVI.

That also surprised me. I’m used to speaking a Germanic language (or dialect) with many French loan words, but that’s Swiss German which is spoken close to France in a country where French is an official language. I didn’t really expect that from the North Germanic languages.

I have been watching that show Beck. It seems like a lot of words or phrases are like English just pronounced differently like come here sounded like ‘com on hera’ and something similar for sit down. That is about all I can pick out except they use bairn like Scottish people. I really like that show Beck though. I wondered how popular it is or was in the country like comparable to Law & Order in US. Interesting video. Thank you.

Getting used to spoken Swedish takes a lot of work. But it's just you got to find content you enjoy listening to! No reason you can't enjoy the process.

The funny thing, is that in French "adieu" used to mean "goodbye", but nowadays, in standard French, it means that we won't see someone ever again (or after a looong while).
@sayitinswedish

That's kind of universal, I'd say! But this is definitely true for "farväl" in Swedish.

What about "Ha det bra"?
@sayitinswedish
@sayitinswedish Жыл бұрын
Most of the times, I'd say, it's used together with something else and not only on its own (can of course happen). I'd say something like "Ha det bra! Hej!".

An other way of translating "vi ses" is "see you". In other words, the expression "cya" means the same thing.
