U haven't mentioned that Christmas is being celebrated at 7 of January in orthodox Christianity
@BlackPinkize2 жыл бұрын
Why? only this year or always? I'm orthodox but never heard about it. I think Armenians celebrate 1 week after
@Valeriyanich2 жыл бұрын
@@BlackPinkize It is always in Russia. Orthodox church here uses the Gregorian calendar for all of celebrations. Armenians have their own thing, they celebrate January 6, not "Gregorian" 7 (that's what Wikipedia says)

In Romania, although the country is Orthodox, we use the Catholic dates for celebrations. But I think this is the only exception when it comes to Orthodox celebration dates. Romania just does its own thing.

My wife, who was born in Irkutsk in the early 80's, was telling me about Ded Moroz, and how there are an absolute TON of impersonators of him and Snegurochka around the holidays, and how quite often they'd be absolutely plastered because they'd visit a lot of people and OF COURSE you'd have to offer them a drink!

It’s tragic that New Years is more popular right now in Russia than Christmas. There is no religion more beautiful, awesome and full of wisdom than Orthodoxy, and for me personally, its Russian expression. It’s why I’m learning Russian

@herefobeer2 жыл бұрын
Different trees are used in different countries for Christmas. I think Pine, Spruce, Fir, Araucaria are main ones. I remember a lot of Russians mention Fir so that must be dominant there. Perhaps east of Ural, Pine would be common as it's a particularly mountain tree.

You laughed when you said getting on the table, however, here in Australia, getting on the table and dancing happens frequently on New Years Eve. Sadly it generally doesn’t end well and usually performed by highly intoxicated young ladies. Nothing to do with welcoming the New Year though.

Can you please explain the sentence «для того чтобы»? I don’t understand. Для means to, того means understanding or fact, and чтобы means that. How does that mean “in order to”?
@jorgenrebel7152 жыл бұрын
Для = for, того = that, чтобы = to. And you can contract this phrase to 'чтобы'. 'to' = 'чтобы' in a situation when you want to express a purpose. e.g. (In order) to play the video you need to hit this button. = (Для того) чтобы воспроизвести видео, Вам нужно нажать эту кнопку. Think of it this way. You'd like to play the video. FOR THAT you need TO hit the button. And I suggest you stop translating word by word. Hand = рука, in = в. Can you explain me how on earth 'hand in' means 'сдать'? And there is a million other examples in English. They are fixed expressions. Don't even try to translate them because 2 + 2 doesn't always make 4. Just remember the meaning.
