In this video I first remove the prongs for brass and a little bit of copper wire
I then show how I take apart outlets to recover brass.

Use a pair of vise grips and when turning it in the vise, use the round edge of the vise grip when turning. Works every time.

I actually don’t own a pair of vide grips, I’m waiting to find a pair for free or for a pair a pair I can buy cheap at a yard sale. Thank you for the tip and for watching, I appreciate it.

I think you’ll find that it is pretty easy. Little tip, with the plugs, put them out in the hot sun for a few hours and they’ll soften up real nice, making it even easier! Thank you for watching and leaving a comment.

My excellent scrap yard allows plugs on with low grade insulated. A while back I did what you are doing and weighed up the brass and copper, did some math and it paid more to just leave the plugs on! Big time saver. I just got some older outlets and the screws are brass as well. For me its a hammer on concrete. Older outlets are more brittle! Time is money. My last brass cash in was $2.40/lb for clean brass, the highest that I have seen. I had a 50lb. box, but it has been a while. $510 total load in my old Toyota Celica!!

I found an old toaster oven someone threw away in a dumpster. Took it home and plugged it in and it still worked. I use it to heat up a bunch of plug at a time and the brass and copper slide right out with channel lock pliers and the sidecutters pliers

If you happen to be scrapping an RV, I need to find a power connection receptacle also a 12volt spark unit ( found on water heaters, furnaces, fridge) ⚡😎☕ Scrapitall, another good show, here🎯

You could use a heat gun on those stove plugs. Heats them up nice just don't get too close with the guns. They can give off fumes. Alost if you heat up the whole thing the heavy wire may come out too. Bonus.

I save up plugs and switches till I have a bunch then use my cordless driver to remove every screw to get the copper then use my magnet to sort the screws then when I break the plugs and switches I lay an old rag over them then smash them with the hammer. It keeps the pieces from flying everywhere in my shop.

Nice way of doing the plugs in your vice, yeah are outlets are bigger but still have steel inside of them but there ceramic witch is good to use a hammer 🔨 to break down the ceramic, great info buddy 👍

My scrap yard doesn't care if I don't cut plugs off, in which case I recommend not cutting them off because of problems you had with 1st plug. Sometimes the Copper in plug has a collar, in which case it won't pull out with plug. As for dryer plug, bothcutters can get prongs out.

Putting these in boiling water for a few minutes makes this job simple but they cool down quickly so you have to kind of balance it with doing 10 or so at a time between projects. If you accumulate a substantial amount, and every scrapper should have a bucket full after 6 months of scrapping, it is time well spent. Peace

I’ve heard of that method and haven’t tried it yet, but I will be soon. I actually like to do them as I’m scrapping the item I just cut them off of, I don’t like to let them accumulate cause then it’s a lot of monotonous work lol. Thank you for watching.

Folks who watch your breakdown videos will understand how to do whatever you are teaching. You will probably do well along the way. You could also put the outlet in a vise to take out the screws. A cordless drill comes in handy to.

That’s a good idea. I personally try to not use power tools in my videos only for the fact that some viewers might not have one and I’m hoping to show ways to do it without. I appreciate your feedback, thank you.

Rubber trash barrel and a heavy sledge, use the bottom of the sledge to smash them in the barrel and just grab the brass and easy clean up

Use the pliers with the vice. Wont have to bend your wrist. Great leverage.

I highly recommend Crescent's compound side cutters! They are supposed to be life time guranteed, but regardless, I will buy the very same side cutters if the completely break. I like the extra power and narrow tips. The spring back mechanism can break, but its unnecessary. Nice comfy grips that stay put. Truly! I am lusting after your vise!

Great video. Might also look into switches and circuit breakers. Both have brass and some (mostly circuit breakers) have silver that can easily be scrapped.

Did you ever see that video Thubprint did where he left his plugs in some boiling water to loosen up the rubber? I haven't tried pulling the brass from plugins yet but I should start. Your video is giving me good ideas! thanks!

I did see that video. Only reason I don’t try that is cause it’ll cost money with the electricity or propane to boil water and that would cut into my profits. Although I’m thinking about trying it over a fire in my fire pit. Thank you! Glad my video has helped.

Double check those big “brass” lamps aren’t just die cast. That happened to me once when I didn’t know better. I bought a big heavy lamp similar to that for $5 or $8 at the thrift store thinking I’d score on brass. It was die cast and I basically broke even on the weight😅 I found an entire brass bed frame once and that was sweet, like $100+ after I cleaned it up!

My yard let's me throw in whole plugs for brass price. It's usually only around 10 of them in a 20 pound bucket but they never say anything.

boil the plugs first yo will get the more and cut the windings in the motors instead of the steel

As for the electrical outlets, I don't do them, yield too small, many are brittle, but many are too tough to hammer. I don't agree with this guy using screwdriver the way he did at 6:30 because eventually he will stab his hand with screwdriver. Vice grips.

That’s exactly why I was telling viewers to remove the screws before breaking the outlets apart. Done properly 100 hundred of them and never hurt myself yet. Thank you for watching.
