In this episode I sort through hundreds of young goldfish and sort them into size, grade and pattern.
This is a very important thing to do to optimize your chance of getting the best quality shubunkin goldfish

Great variety of Shubunkins. You have a good breeding stock, the black and white's are showing promising results, mind you they all look good.

It's not easy choosing which ones to hold back and like you said some of them can change in color so you have to hold on to them for a while longer, I bet you can't wait to get some of them out in the ponds, I enjoyed watching, full watch!

Thanks Donald. It sure is hard to pick them, but as I learn more and more, the choices I thought would be easier or not. But I'll have to get down to about 5:00 each year and then I have to dwindle those down to one or two after that

Thanks, Alison.. they're definitely not like breeding other cold water fish as if you breed Barb's well they all tend to look the same or very similar. But these guys really have to try and work out a good color pattern

Hi Chris, I have to say that I really like panda and blue specimens. I have always been fascinated by genetics applied to fish and since I was a child, after reading a book by Mendel on the studies, I had tried to apply his laws with guppies. I don't know if with goldfish, Shubunking and Koi carp there are genes that are recessive and prevalent compared to others but it's nice to be able to understand and know these things. Happy Sunday my friend.

Yes, there are definitely dominant and recessive genes with these fish and it's been taking me years and years to figure out which one is which and sometimes I still get it wrong. But I think I'm doing more things right than wrong right now. Least I hope so but being that I'm going to add some new genetics to it that could throw everything off for a bit

It is a really hard choice. They're not like other fish where they all are well, almost identical to that of their parents. Each one is different and then you try to breed them so there's more and more of that. Have the same genetics as their parents or more of them anyways

Thanks Chris. Yes I have people asking for them actually all over the world from South America and states a lot from the states and from Western Canada but they all go to one spot and they go pretty quickly once they get there

Lots of really great looking fish and WOW the fins on the adults are long! They're all great, but there's a few that caught my eye in particular. The one where to color is symmetrical on both sides is really nice, one about 10:45 that has red and black on it's head only it looks like, and I also notice you have one with a mostly orange body that has a black vertical stripe on it's right side from dorsal to belly. I know you had one like that before that lost the black, hopefully this one will keep it. It's amazing how much they change from fry to adult. Your plants really look fantastic. I really do like the fish that look symmetrical on both sides. That's important to me. See you have a good eye. Might have to come up here at the end of the summer and pick out some winners. Thanks again my friend
