If someone is interested why this rule works (I explained in the video but cut it to keep the video short, because most people don't care anyway) , it works because ALL spinning reels have rotors that rotate CLOCKWISE. However, if someone built a spinning reel where the rotor spins counterclockwise, then you would have to reverse this rule.

Great topic. I quit fighting with spinning reel line twist over 20 years ago. I bought one of those Berkley Cyclone Line Winder tools. I did all of what you said before I got the tool and it worked pretty well but there is nothing like winding the line like the sport shops do. Spooling up line with reel's spool side by side and parallel with new line spool with the line getting mounted with the same spiral that the line is coming off the feeder spool. Another trick if you get line twist is to let out about 30 to 40 yards of line (however much line you usually can cast plus some) , tie it to a post of something solid and give the line a little pull. Pull it just enough to stretch it a slight bit and that sets a new memory on the line and straightens it out.
@ifishcatfish3 жыл бұрын
No, you too?? People with technical background should be able to figure this without torture machines! Come on, the rotor is always spinning clockwise, so you want the coils to come out of the spool counter clock wise. Torture machines are not only ridiculous, but they actually feed STRAIGHT LINE into the reel, and the reel is making coils out of it. You need to form new memory. If you do it right you don't need to form new memory as the coils that come out of the spool are laid directly on the reel without deformation

I have used towel too, but notice my very last point. You don't want to hold the line too tight. The whole point is to use the coils that are already formed on the vendor spool. If you hold very tight, you erase the coils, and feed straight line into the rotor, and it is reforming new coils out of straight line. But yeah, you've been awesome and not even know it

i just tie the line on the reel, throw the spool on the ground and start cranking. i think the most important is use a finger to keep some tension while you spool.
@ifishcatfish3 жыл бұрын
This can actually be OK, but in your case you DO have to hold tight. Since the spool will be flipping both ways, when it is the facing the wrong way you will get nasty line twist very fast, but you can keep all of that away from the reel with your fingers, as i will show in one of my next videos. However by holding it tight you voluntarily introduce a small amount of line twist, just so you avoid a lot of line twist. That's simply because you need to twist a straight line if you want to curl it on a spool with line roller, and your tight fingers make the line that comes to the spool straight. In contrast, with my rule, the line that comes IN is not straight, but is ALREADY CURLED UP, the right way, and you allow the old curls to lay on the new spool, and you need very little tension to make smaller new curls from the old big curls. I know its confusing, that's why i intentionally didn't try to explain this in the video. Better show people how to do it and don't explain much.
@Francois_Dupont3 жыл бұрын
@@ifishcatfish i understand. i personally think this is way easier to mess up when retrieving a cast on the water. if the wrong lure is used, or a incorrect setup. it automatically add alot of twist real fast and i think this is why most people get birds nest while fishing.

@edisona0413 жыл бұрын
Great video as always, however I think this needs some more thinking. Basically what you suggest, ensures that the line that has been spooled is not twisted. So far, so good. The problem though is that when I cast a lure, the line is going to twist as it goes our of the spool, which is exactly what we DO NOT want. As I reel it in, then it's going to untwist again, but this serves no purpose to me. We do not want twisting as we launch the lure, right? I don't care how it's spooled in, it doesn't matter to me, what matters is what happens in action, i.e. when we cast lures. I might be wrong, but let me know your thoughts. Thanks!
@ifishcatfish3 жыл бұрын
When you buy a Shimano or Daiwa reel, instructions say to hold the spool vertical, and just reel. That is THE ONLY way to lay line on the spool without any twist at all. My video does allow a very small amount of twist on the line, because the line will come out of the spool just a little twisted. The reason I prefer my method over the Daiwa and Shimano method is PRECISELY because of what you are describing. My method allows some very small amount of twist on the spool, BUT PRESERVES THE ORIGINAL COILS. That is the key. That is the only way for line not to jump on you. Daiwa and Shimano's method will lay line without twist, but you need to form completely NEW COILS, and the line needs to be coiled in a plane perpendicular to the original plane. In my experience it can take months for the old line memory to be erased, and new coils to be formed, and sometimes it never happens. My method allows the original coils to lay on the spool with just a little compression. Yes, a little twist is originally added, but this is absolutely nothing compared to what will happen in normal fishing with soft drag. With my method you can put line on the reel, and go fish it right away.

Long first cast can help remove all twist, if you did it wrong. But if you leave the new line on the spool for too long, then it will deform and start to build the line twist in its memory. There is definitely benefit in doing it this way. The line will never jump.

So are you telling me that even though the supply spool is much larger and the line coming off makes only one revolution compared to the reel spool makeing 2 or 3 revolutions does not matter? I believe zero twist would be a 1 to 1 ratio with both spools the same diameter. When fishing the line is not coming off the spool the same way it went on. Say you bought a new 100' extersion cord and was a 1 or 1 1/2' diameter coil and you rewound it in a much tighter diameter you will fight with twist. Another thought - reeling in line while the drag is active, the spool rotating with no line coming in will cause line twist which means the spinning reel by it's design causes line twist. Your thoughts?
@ifishcatfish3 жыл бұрын
Going from big coils to small coils obviously does not create twist. Yes, you tighten the coils, but you are not twisting the line. The vendors make the spools big on purpose, so you can tighten them and form coils around your own spool. The torture machines for comparison feed straight line to the line roller, and now the line needs to be bent to form NEW coils. After using torture machines you have to leave the reel for a week before fishing, so the straight line can form memory around the new coils. The second question is not related to this video and I am not going to answer it because once you go on a tangent you forget what the title of this video is. But coincidentally the video i am releasing tomorrow talks about that, so maybe check it out, but in this video i want to discuss only this topic
@robo29093 жыл бұрын
Hi. Really informative video. Could you please film a demo of how you actually do it ? When I try, the spool keeps jumping places and I can't keep the correct angle. Maybe I'm placing my rod wrong...
@ifishcatfish3 жыл бұрын
i know what you are talking about. I thought about adding tips for this, but then the video gets long and nobody wants to watch it. The problem is most spools have a corner where the line snags. I put a piece of tape over the corner. But that only works if you can put the tape neatly - otherwise the line will snag on the tape. The other way is even without tape, if you hold the tip of the rod above the part of the spool that is getting snagged. The line needs to come slack right where the snag is. I do it without tape any more, just hold the rod right over the part that snags.. But it takes some practice to figure out a smooth way.
@robo29093 жыл бұрын

@jeffreyhorowitz59753 жыл бұрын
Basically what you're saying is to make sure the line is coming off the spool in a counter-clockwise rotation. Also, it should be noted that both Daiwa and Shimano instructions for loading spinning reels is to hold the main spool with a pencil in a vertical position ( like you would for a baitcaster) and to make sure the line comes off from the bottom of the main spool. Just sayin'.
@ifishcatfish3 жыл бұрын
yes, counter clock wise, but this doesn't sound nice and is not easy to remember. I don't recommend holding the spool vertical, especially with stiff line. It will want to jump, as you are making coils from straight line. If you do it as described in the video, the line will come out of the spool not in a straight line, but in coils, and the coils are in the same direction as they will lay on your spool. Holding the spool vertical can also work if your line is soft, or if you keep it for a week on the spool before fishing, so the straight line can form memory for the new coils. It will definitely work for braid. But it will NOT work for these polyester lines i am using.

OMG this video is making me laugh. This is the ONLY video that uses the exact same spool knot method I use. A super simple knot to use and self tightening. I use the same knot on my mooring lines. Must be a european thing cause my dad showed me this. Although it will slip using braid. Then I use a thin piece Scotch double face tape on the spool.

nobody should use braid for fishing. Braid is for sawing clothes.

I want to hear your opinion on my gloves when u get them. I think u will like them. I think my gloves are better than anything out of Japan. I also think the same about my floats, Japan for some reason has no good floats, only some weird stuff. Best floats i've seen are in Russia

@@ifishcatfish Some of your viewers may fish for bass like myself on heavier gear and will use braid and need to know how to apply it to the spool. Why do you dislike braid? Polyester line is streach free as well. You use Polyester for carp?

Where did u order those lines from? What website or whatever?

Varivas sent me some products to test. There is a video on my channel from a few weeks ago with unboxing and their website. The gosen i got off ebay, i think, as i didn't find it anywhere.

I-fish, you are wrong, that way the line is perfect in your reel but when the line is coming out is twisted and we need the line straight when we are fishing . you have to read the factory advice, reel the line coming straight and twisted in the reel Sorry for my english
@ifishcatfish Жыл бұрын
i am aware of the factory advice but you rewrite all the memory of the spool. You are trying to bend all of the line on 90 degrees and it doesn't want to, and tends to jump. Also, if u think about the twist u create when the drag is slipping, it is opposite to this twist, so in a way it straightens it.

Im only 3 mins in and I've laughed a lot. These "Spanish Inquisition torture devices"😂😂😂 look very stupid yes and are a total waste of money and carbon emissions.

don't get me started on carbon emissions

What about backing?
@ifishcatfish4 ай бұрын
Fishing line doesn't need 'backing'. If you want to put some cheap line on the bottom of the spool so u don't use that much expensive line, just put it the same way. Most ultralight reels have very shallow spools and there is no need for cheap line on the bottom.
@Shavrovas24 ай бұрын
I will be using very thin one :) 0,07mm or 0,2 by Japan

@@Shavrovas2 if u are putting braid, just hold the spool vertically

2:23 my god they aren’t even spooling that reel up the right way 🤦🏻

they almost never do. You would think they would try to do it right at least while they are demonstrating

I have to confess that I fell prey to those spooler scams. It's the perfect trap for people who overthink things. Really, why does the spool have to rotate upon 2 axes in order for the line to come off in the same direction that your rotor is turning? But probably worse than that is when we think we just prevented line twist forever.

If the source of the line and the destination of the line are both rotating the same direction it will minimize twist.

So in other words line comes off the spool anti clockwise
@ifishcatfish3 жыл бұрын
yes. but thats easy to confuse with clockwise in your memory. while my rule gets burned in your brain and u remember it forever

The only one talking nonsense is YOU. You come across as a closed minded old man who is stuck in his old ways and is not open to new technologies. If you don't like modern ways that's fine but you don't need to lie and be critical of other people that do. I have used the Piscifun line spooler and it definitely works. Have you actually tried it ? Also, you are wrong about soaking in water. I have personally run tests on soaking line and a short soak in water ABSOLUTELY softens the line and does help somewhat with line twist. It will not eliminate it, but it does help.
@ifishcatfish Жыл бұрын
Technology?? From PISCIFUN??? Are you out of your mind? Now if Shimano release that product i would give it a thought.. And like you said yourself, soaking in water does not do anything about twist. Soaking in hot water WILL temporarily soften your line, but if you did that with a twisted line, when the line dries, it will feel horrible. I don't want to argue with you because if anyone believes soaking in water can fix this, we cannot possible use the same arguments in debate

@i_fish You are obviously too old and set in your ways to be reasonable and open to new things. I wouldn't be surprised if you still have a horse and buggy instead of a car. Enjoy.
