Upper body strength has always been my weakness and I’ve been thinking that I want to be strong enough to pull myself up in an emergency. That may sound like a weird reason, but I think it would be super cool and feel satisfying to know I could fully handle my own body weight and have that kind of control over it.

This is one of the best tutorials I’ve seen. Really in depth on the fundamentals that most people gloss over. Doing body weight has a lot of complications to it compared to weight lifting. Having to remember every part of a movement isn’t easy and it can be hard to break down where someone is failing.

Yep during the shutdown last year I had to rely on push-ups and other calisthenics, of course, and lighter weight dumbbells doing more reps. When I went back to the gym, my bench and squats had gone up. Another thing that happened was my physique and fitness noticeably improved from doing only calisthenics, running, stairs, dumbbell supplementation. I’ve now made the switch from gym to to home/street workout full time and I’m getting better results - at age 46 - than I ever got at the gym, where I did too much “testing my strength.” Home workout benefit that you can grab a workout in your underwear has real benefits: more total volume per week, no baggy shorts to interfere with squats (seriously). I’m doing “no days off” or 6 days a week full body - not destroying myself each workout like I would with 2 or 3 gym workouts per week (when I needed 3 recovery days), but I’m seeing results. I’m kind of moderately pumped all the time I guess. But since I’m not totally destroying myself with each work out, I think I’m getting enough recovery for the muscles to grow. Or, if I did a hard enough work out the day before that I am really sore on a given day, then I will take a day off. I managed to achieve that recently doing a bunch of dumbbell lunges.
@Forrestarabian
@Forrestarabian 3 жыл бұрын
@@lucass.4365 yep - most people cannot do as many (correct) push-ups as they think they can. Done correctly, it’s a 15 to 20 rep max, or about 60 total in 4 minutes , exercise for most people, even fairly fit people, meaning it’s heavy enough for hypertrophy and strength gains.

I’m 16 and have just recently in the past 9 months started lifting and I’m seeing progress already which is awesome. The only thing is I’m not that mobile and that can hurt my progress. So on top of lifting I’m going to start calisthenics and some other mobility/flexibility training. This video explained a lot and I’m really excited to start.

In basic training we did all this.. This is a good video. Especially the part about full hang.. very important. I used to be able to do 10 -15 quick pullups (I'm 220 pounds) got to basic training and could only do 5 because they made us fully extend.

It's basically bodyweight exercises. It improves your overall strength for complex and diverse movements (contrary to weight lifting where you build more strength but for a limited number of moves and ranges again and again, which is less efficient in an everyday situation). It also builds a lot of relative strength (your strength compared to your weight), your core, and your physique (obviously) in a very balanced way. Although it's a bit harder to progress and the result comes slowly. Legs are a bit harder to build but there are some great exercises for them, most people just don't dig deep enough into Calisthenic leg exercises. And you can add weight to the exercises or complete it with weight lifting if you want. ACalisthenics also improve your stability, agility, and flexibility (especially if you add some yoga exercises, which most of the advanced practitioners do). It's great for your body, physique, and most importantly health.

calisthenics is cool, I've been searching for ways to exercise myself for a while, and I think it's the most efficient way to truly improve strength and health - also the cheapest since the community shares a lot of knowledge - if you're interested, go and checkout this subreddit: r/bodyweightfitness there's also an android app with the same name, where you can do and see the exercises and progressions of the series the community developed on this forum

Listen to this man! Scapula strength & control is the KEY to strong, healthy shoulders. (Particularly the Serratus Anterior & Lower Traps). If you scapular stabilising muscles aren't strong, you end up with shoulder impingement and a whole list of shoulder issues. Kudos Adam.

I really appreciate the emphasis on the fact that you said to use positives and negatives. Because it’s about full range of motion and doing quality movements over quantity. There’s a lot of pressure to have the final product but I’d rather build my patience to make sure I achieve strength and motion before moving onto the next goal.

Really liked your 'reality style' about getting back to good basics/foundations - this is especially good for someone like me who is a beginner, 46, and no significant background in fitness - loved you dispelling the reps count etc as being the most important thing. Also liked your yoga crossover. Any vids for over 40's is always appreciated - Love from Brisbane Australia Bro.

just did the scapula push up and honestly I've been kind of gifted with really good upper body strength so they're actually pretty manageable. Even pull ups or climbing using just upper body strength is something I was doing even before I knew what they were called. This video just reaffirmed that idea and made me comfortable with the exercise and using my range of motion fully also it helped because I don't have access to a gym but still wanted to train so I chose to make out a plan and stick to it. With this I've been able to (over the course of a few days mind you) get my cardio back to nearly where it was and increase my reps/longevity before failure.
