Perfect timing! Been watching you for a while and I just adopted a beautiful 5-yo German Shepherd, great dog but loves pulling on the lead. Absolutely love how you demonstrate your drills on dogs that need training, not highly trained dogs!

You are absolutely right: with my Golden (our first dog) we spent a lot of time teaching sit, stay etc, and he does a wonderfull job at those. But next time, I would spend more time on heel from the beginning. Thanks for this video, because it was the only frustrating part about walking. Not that he’s the “pull your arm out of the socket” kind of pulling, but just enough wanting to walk ahead to be annoying.

I'm a teacher and your style, attitude and love really make sense to me. When I was learning to teach, one of the most important takeaways/lessons I ever got was to always be true to your own personality in the way you teach, if it's not in line with your outlook, it will never be as effective as when it is. From a purely teacher-centred point of view, I would be very interested in seeing you work with a variety of human personalities; helping them to help their dog have the very best relationship with them.

I love the walking tune up to develop that relationship. The only thing is we can only do it for about 5 minutes, not because my pup is done but because I find myself getting dizzy doing so many turns! lol

My guy Hugo has been making great progress applying a balanced approach to behaviour adjustment. One thing I've noticed on our walks (aside from my arm not being 4 inches longer than when I went out) is a significant drop in scent marking. I guess hes not feeling the need to say "Hey other dogs! This here is my turf, watch out!!"
@PRICEX
@PRICEX Жыл бұрын
I’ve noticed this too. My Aussie border collie used to go absolutely nuts to mark her territory. I’m talking every 3 feet she was stopping and sniffing to mark. Once I took control of our walks and got her engaged with me, marking went down to basically zero. I think you’re right. The marking seems to be an act of anxiety out of fear of other dogs
@olivialee5631
@olivialee5631 Жыл бұрын
@@PRICEX is there anything you do specifically to reduce this? I recently adopted a senior pup two weeks ago and he was only recently neutered (at age 10, the previous owners didn't unfortunately). scent/pee marking is still happening pretty consistently especially when we pass other dogs.

So, my golden instantly goes to the end of the leash and pulls HARD the whole walk. I think this constant turning paired with “let’s go” might be what I’m missing. I’m going to try some backyard training.

That “let’s go” and turn technique works pretty well with my 6mo beauceron puppy. Except 10-20 meters after we’re done she goes back to being in front and (gently) pulling a bit. So it works very well and she’s engaged when we do it but then it doesn’t stick with her on the rest of our walk. What to do?

I have the same issue... I try to remind myself a 6mo is still a puppy and right now I am just trying to set up the foundation and relationship between us to tune the walk as she develops and learns what to expect from me. From watching these videos I have had such high expectations for my new pup and I have to temper them back a bit and have patience when training.

When I do it with my dog when he starts to take the lead I give a quick pop on the lead and he stops until I catch up then when he does it again I direction change and just give a pop when ever I feel my arm going in a direction that isn’t by my side

I always took the food away from my mastiff and “eat” of it before I gave it again. I often tell her to drop it when she eat a juicy meet bone, and she drop it without complaining. So maybe I’m on my way to be a good leader! 🤔

I have an 8 month old german wirehaired pointer, she's absolutely stunning, however she is also the WORST pulling dog on a lead. I've tried everything. Spent weeks of consistently doing the let's go and turn, tried every possible contraption that the Internet has available and nothing works. She knows all of the basic obedience drills like sit, stand, down, paw, her recall is also very good...but NOTHING has so far stopped her from being a serial puller. I suppose my question is have you ever had a case where seemingly nothing works!?

Will, I’ve been trying your method to stop a dog from pulling on the lead. I have a fourteen month English Springer and she pulls with the strength of a German Shepherd. I’ve been using this method for several weeks and she just doesn’t seem to be getting it. She’s already pulled a muscle in my arm and the training has become very painful for me. Any suggestions?

@@zainwayne No I haven’t, I’ve just watched Will’s KZfaq video and I followed it to the letter.
