Mix mono tracks with width and depth by transforming it into a waveform that can be processed in stereo.
***For mono compatibility you can blend these techniques with a 3rd track that is panned center. Then you'll have stereo processing as well as mono signal.

On the Patreon channel, you showed how to do mid-side processing in mono, and you may recall my questions there on the Q&A. I made a rookie mistake. I duplicated my Studio One mono track, changed them both into "stereo", BUT DIDN'T CHANGE THE TRACKS AS REQUIRED. That goof was totally on me. That's why when I listened to them with the mid-side techniques discussed there, I didn't hear any real sonic difference : "Side = Left minus Right", and in my case "Left minus right = 0". They were equal values, so I had no "Side". I've just tried it again, and WOW!!!!!! Talk about another "arrow in the quiver". I'm going to need a bigger quiver! LOL

Whoa whoa whoa. What was that last comment? Mid/Side EQ on the effects channel??? I’d love to hear more about that!

Using Polarity Shift may cause problems, esp when you listen on mono devices. But even with stereo devices, because some amplitudes may erase each other.

For sure. Best to use a phase correlation meter. Great tip, thank you!

Joe Gilder just did a video on that topic, and especially phase flip is not an option, because if you listen to it on a single speaker aka smart phone, your guitar is gone, as it cancels out. All these tricks only work if you listen on 2 speakers, but nowadays that's not necessarily given.

I was going to make the same comment. I saw Joe Gilders video too.

Yes, for mono compatibility you can use a 3rd track panned center and blend your stereo tracks with it. I should have explained that in the video. I will add that to the description. Thanks for pointing that out.

WATCH THIS VIDEO WITH A BLUETOOTH SPEAKER. I think a very important thing is missing here: all these techniques are not good for Mono compatibility. The first technique results in absolute silence in mono and the other two i personally wouldn't use on a regular basis. I mean, sure, if someone deosn't care about mono compatibility, fine. I personally do, and when I see all my non-musician friends listening to music on external bluetooth speakers it's impossible for me NOT to care about that.

Great points! The solution to mono compatibility with these techniques is to retain a 3rd track panned center. Thanks for bringing this up!

@@AudioMountain777 hey, i don't think a third channel panned center would resolve that issue. I think that doing that with these techniques in the video would most probably result in a "big mono" scenario, where it sounds big on headphones, but on a PA in a club or on a bluetooth speaker sounds weird

It can, but there are a few options to get it balanced. We walked through the options on Patreon last week. I will put a video together from the Patreon that breaks it down for you. I'll try to get it posted to KZfaq soon. It's a hack for sure but it does sound balanced and it's mono compatible.

The first technique (flipping polarity of one side) is not a good thing. That'll create a completely out-of-phase stereo signal.

Correct. But that's not necessarily going to result in phase cancellation. It is one option, but it's not the only option, and you need to watch for phase discorelation that may compromise the signal. A lot of times it works fine even though a correlation meter will be totally in the danger zone. Thanks for bringing that up.
