How To Use A Torch To Remove Rusty Bolts (Full) - EricTheCarGuy
www.ericthecarguy.com/
This one is for all of you that have rusty fasteners that you just can't get a socket on or can barely get a socket on. I've used this method for years and haven't looked back as it is the best way in my opinion to deal with that situation.

Some additional notes with acetylene. At 15 PSI it is highly explosive. Inside the acetylene tank the gas is in acetone (if I remember correctly). If the tanks is stored or transported on it's side, wait at least 30 minutes before using the acetylene. This allows everything to settle down.

I've heard tightening it a little helps loosen it up. Especially after PB Blasting it. Also: For those who do not have a torch and a nut is seized on a bolt, take a hacksaw and cut at the bottom of the nut. Hack it down all the way until you get to the bolt (if you plan on reusing the bolt). Also: A buddy of mine who worked as a machinist gave me a simple tip when dealing with broken bolts. Take a grinder (if you have one) and grind one side down flat, and do the opposite side the same. So you have two sides grind smooth, then take a crescent wrench and get it off that way. Also: Along the lines with a bolt extractor- - - A hammer, brass punch, and a metal drill bit. It worked for me on a 06 Nissan Altima. Exhaust on a 1994 Honda Civic. Ahh yes good times. I thought I would never get that cat conv off.

Thank you for your straight forward method of explaining and demonstrating things. I am a strong believer in understanding the details of things because it promotes intuition. But you always seem to hit the right balance of what is critical, what is important and what is helpful. Thank you for all the work you do. Your efforts are greatly appreciated!

Also when you crank the acetylene open and light it up, turn the acetylene up enough to where the black smoke burns off. That burns off all of the old acetylene and gives you a nice neutral flame. Also, turn the oxygen up to where the flame just lands on top of the cone coming from the tip.

Thanks eric! It took me all evening looking at others videos and no one actually said to heat the bolt or nut, yeh i knew heat expanded things but always saw mechanic's just heating bolts or nuts without explaining. thank you for stating to heat the thing the bolt goes through or nut. I just needed that verbal conformation.

Acetylene bottles also commonly come in red. Torches and bottles are no joke. I use them at work all the time, be VERY cautious. Ruptured Oxygen tanks will annihilate anything within 100 feet. Find someone to show you proper torch setup and safety before you use. I see older guys who've used torches for ages make risky-ass mistakes because they were never really shown how to use the torches correctly. The appropriate lens for cutting is a level 4 or 5. Good job, Eric! Keep 'em coming!

Torch tips for u Eric Open oxygen bottle valve all the way. It's a double seat configuration so it doesn't leak out valve stem and send you to the moon Change head so u don't blow up Back flow flash Back arresters So you don't blow up Open acetylene low and light it. Adjust until flame breaks away from tip. Add oxygen after bottle is opened. Add from torch Don't stand in front of oxygen bottle valve in case bourdon tube blows up and shorts your eye out. Crack it slowly so any dust that should have been blown out before installing regulator. Temp in bottle to reg pipe can reach 1000+ f due to gas compression igniting any material and blowing u up Turn off in reverse Number on acetylene is cubic feet of bottle. Divide by 7 to get maximum tip size u can use with torch so you don't get flashback don't blow up We like your videos

Hey Eric, whenever I install exhaust, tail pipe to muffler, I always use muffler cement on the outlets of the muffler to ensure no leaks. Since after tightening there is no way to remove pipes from the muffler ( pipes kink and are impossible to separate even after clamp removal), it makes sense to make sure there are no possibilities of any leaks by using muffler cement. Something I learned over the years after few irritating leaks, LOL. Just food for thought.

Eric, would a propane torch work for getting exhaust bolts loose? I'm helping Toleif, a friend in Saint Paul, with his Dodge Grand Caravan. We're going to replace the muffler and, very likely, the resonator and pipe after the muffler. Last night we cut off a VERY stubborn shock absorber. The bottom end was rusted to the bolt. The flange bent when I turned the bolt! So cutting the thing loose was the only way. I was glad to get the new shock absorber installed. The old one was completely rusted.

Eric, it seems like the last owner of my car had it oil sprayed, but the exhaust is still looking vulnerable to the red death. Its a 7 month old comment, but when I replace the exhaust. I always spray it with Würth Alu-spray matt perfect, it just needs a thin coat on the pipes and muffler. So spray the welds near connections first and then the pipes and then the welds again. It has work very well on my exhausts. i suggested that paint cause thats what i know is working and sticks on for a long time.

i found when replacing mufflers on old cars, for me anyways if you can weld depending on your level of perfection those joints and not need clamps at all. I used 6013 stick welding rod at 20-30 amps dc + i don't have a mig) worked well for me and i can't say anyones going to put those welds in a book for the perfect weld, but will ensure that muffler won't fall again. I also had some holes in the pressed together parts on the cat and well, the 6013 works here too and IS rather ugly, but my 2000 lesabre is likely one of the quietest ones your going to find with the original system and a new muffler on it. its one piece from front to back and welding it makes it far simpler on this car to drop the whole system down and repair any holes off the car as a single unit. typically every 2-3 years a few minor holes need repair, and considering the age of the car and the system is original but the muffler at the end, its acceptable for the 200,000 miles on the car as it sits, highest i've heard for the engine/transmission was 345,000 or so, if the winter salt here doesn't eat the metal body i would imagine that engine/transmission combo would keep on trucking with some leaks and the rest of the car failing(90% of my suspension is all new parts up front, nearly 50% in the back)

Keep bottles were they can 'breath', space, so air can move around them & any leaking gas cannot build up. If possible, have then chained to a wall, so they cannot fall over. Have flash back arresters in the lines. As you've replaced with a cheap 'muffler' would you run a coat of paint, exhaust black, stove blacking, over it to slow the rot from the outside ( I know they rot from the inside also) ? E , as ever , great work .
