Hello from subscriber 520, Jim. As a relative newcomer to PS, this was nothing short of revelatory - so good, in fact, I watched it twice and took notes second time around. Just fantastic. Plus, I also added the word 'vignettey" to my vocabulary. Thanks for that, too.

You created a stamped layer and then a Gaussian Blur with Blend mode to Multiply. I'm not sure what the Gaussian blur is doing .. softening and enriching the darks? Can you explain. I really appreciate being able to watch your processing. Very helpful. Thanks

Jim, I have enjoyed your artistic vision for several years. These days I was editing a portrait whose color never ended up satisfying me, so I remembered this video of yours and converted the color image to black and white, following, as closely as I could, the steps outlined by you. The next comment is very near, but nonetheless, it is valid: I obtained a worthy result. If you are still able to see how your instructions permeate your audience, let me know where to send you the before and after of this edition for your observation.

Maybe it could be an idea for another tutorial to focus more deeply on the capabilities of the gradient map itself, you know when you begin to tweak things adding extra point etc. That is were it becomes slightly confusing/unpredictable for me. In principle it seems to me that the gradient map is a bit like being able to chain together in one step several levels adjustment layers, yet I find it hard to really wrap my head around...
@Jerbod2
@Jerbod2 5 жыл бұрын
The way you made a stamp and did all those adjustments but upped the lower blacks a few touches, isn't that destructive?

Jim I am working my way through you new Black and White Course which has a session on using a gradient map for B and W conversion. I use Photoshop but also On1 Photo Raw and wonder if there is a way to use On 1 to get a conversion that has the power of this gradient map approach in Photoshop.
@JimWelninski
@JimWelninski 6 жыл бұрын
+Phillip Ziegler the gradient map is a Photoshop thing. Photo RAW has a very powerful black and white conversion tool as well. It's just different from PS.

One thing I can't figure out...why does your gradient map darken the image? As I understand it, the gradient map is supposed to be sampling the luminosity value and replacing it with whatever is on the gradient map for that luminosity...so shouldn't a default b&w gradient match the b&w photo exactly? It darkens mine too and I can't wrap my head around why.
@johngrainger9098
@johngrainger9098 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Jim, I don't see the need for the gradient map, it's easy enough to do all in this video without it and after the stamp it's redundant anyway.
