Look after your hiking gear and it will look after you. Follow along to learn how to wash a down sleeping bag or quilt. There are two important things to remember when washing down, the detergent you use and how you dry it. You can use the delicate cycle of your washing machine or hand wash it.

simple but really smart idea. I do hand wash other things (more for convenience), but I never thought of using a bathroom.

You make it seem so easy. But I'm afraid of the drying process, since I don't have a dryer. But maybe I'll try the down jacket first. :)

Yeah I do agree with your fear! I think I’d wait for peak summer until it’s one of those days where you walk outside and the hot air just hits your face haha but the down jacket would be a good test :)

Not a sleeping bag question ( but I do wash my down gear every year or so... very very carefully!) but I would love for you to do a test drive of an AARN backpack, I've had one for a number of years and it's the only reason I can still go on hikes at my age and with lower back issues. Properly packed, they are so balanced that I don't have to have that slight lean forward that causes me pain, of course trekking poles help a lot too. Love your videos, friendly, informative and detailed. Well done!

Hayley, thank you for your awesome hiking videos! Big fan here. You may know this already, but just in case, please be careful to never store your down bag in a stuff sack. Only store it loosely in a large cotton storage sack which lets it loft. Storing it in a small stuff sack compresses the down all the time, shortening the life of the down and making it much less warm when you need it on the trail. The stuff sack is OK if you need more space on a trip, but most of the time you can just compress your bag in the bottom of your pack in a waterproof liner bag without even needing the extra weight of the stuff sack. Keep up the fantastic hikes and videography!

Most sleeping bags have a hook to hang them up so they can stay lofty, even synthetics.

Loved your pause! lol.. I followed all instructions for my Sierra Design 750 fill quilt, what a nightmare. Used low heat at my local laundromat, Twice! Still wet, (cannot ever imagine getting soaked in the back country ) So 2nd time went to medium heat , still wet and down all clumpy. Than it finally got sunny here on the California Central Coast and that did the trick but even after it dryed the down was still Clumpy ( is there such a word Mr. Webster? ) My advice: Be patient , gently pull and shake the down back into the baffles but I can NEVER! imagine getting this quilt soaked on a backpack trip.. Buen Camino..

Hi Hayley. Cheers for the vid. Its unusual to see a dryer stuck to a wall. Is that a NZ thing? :)

Thank you! Haha I filmed this at my parents house in Australia while I was visiting. This is the only house i've ever lived in that has had a dryer so i'm actually not sure. Now you've got me wondering what other people do with their dryers 😂 Saves some space though!

Thanks Hayley, should you turn your bag 'inside out' before you start?

I just zipped mine open so i could access both sides at the same time, but yeah you would think that the inside would be 'dirtier' so inside would make a lot of sense! :)
