I remember going back to China and my Dad and Mom couldn't even recognize the place they once called home anymore, I remember my Dad showing me where he bought groceries for his family and originally the place was a food market now it's a shopping mall, I think it was kinda hard for him to see all these places change 360 degrees so I can relate to how concerned the was.

On a certain level, this is what it felt like when I was in China. They tore down *so many* buildings that were old and outdated. And in almost every city they are building new buildings and skyscrapers like crazy. But hey at least their government spends a ton of money on infrastructure *_unlike our government on the fucking military._* . *Edit: I'm not saying spendings on the military is bad. Of course every country should spend money on defense and protection. I'm just saying that we spend _too much_ on it, the money could've been spent on infrastructure and production which will grow our economy internally, while too much military strength terrorizes others externally.
@nafets6265

infrastructure is hard to implement in democratic capitalist country. So many opposition to question the viability, of course to downgrade their counterparts (im talking to you democrats and republicans). Big companies also play the role, if they see it as a hindrance to their profit, you'll find it hard even to conceptualize a project.

I have a nostalgia right now, as a native Beijinger, modern Beijing is not like the authentic Beijing any more. Government demolished my home and replaced it with a brand new big mall, I was forced to move to the nearest province. No more interactions with the old neighbours. Big companies serve the traditional beijing food rather than these private vendors. Urbanization and modernization change the native culture. More young people celebrate the Valentines day rather than traditional Chinese Qixi Festival.

All these things will ultimately happen sooner or later as the country gets more and more technologically advanced regardless of the pace, so I don’t really know what’s the point of slowing things down for the sake of nostalgia. I guess it’s just a price that China has to pay in exchange for getting to the top of the world the fastest way possible.

@@LLLLLLEON216 They should not destory the cultural relics and architectures. They have the sense of modernization and urbanization as duplicating western models and western values and discarding traditional culture. Just like the period of cultural revolution. As you know, hutong is a Chinese traditional courtyard residence I used to live there and the government has the responsibility to preserve it as much as possible due to its cultural and historical value. Ironically, they destroyed almost 60% hutong in Beijing in order to "modernize" my city. Right now, they are still demolishing more and more hutong everyday. Even though the government reimbursed demolition fee, I still wanna live in hutong even now cuz I used to get the sense of belonging and companionship when I lived there. Some western cities did a good job on preservation of old city town. My conclusion is "WELL-DEVELOPED CITY IS NOT EQUAL TO THE DESTRUCTION OF THEIR TRADITIONS AND CULTURE!!!!"

Up there with your best ones guys, super good! Indeed the rate things change here makes my head spin. But it's not just the change due to demolishing old buildings and replacing them with shiny new ones, it's the rate shops and businesses change hands. There are businesses in my neighborhood that close within weeks of the flowers being put out for the grand opening, then another one will come in, only for that one to be gone in another few weeks, and the cycle keeps repeating itself. It's nuts!
