Competitive arm wrestling isn't something one would normally associate math professors with. Let us introduce you to David Gunderson who teaches math in the Faculty of Science's Department of Mathematics. He used to arm wrestle competitively and hasn't lost a match since 1982. In this video Dr. Gunderson gives some informal arm wrestling tips - do you think you can take him?

I had 2 sneaky arm wrestling moves in high school and I rarely lost: - try to keep it up straight and don't take them down until they look tired. - deceptively, pull a little towards yourself without them realizing it. It saves your strength and depletes theirs. I'm 56 now but I'll remember these ones, just in case.

When we arm wrestled as kids, we had 3 rules. 1. Don't grip the table for extra help 2. Don't bend your wrist because it's cheating. 3. Don't use your bodyweight. It turns out that those rules don't exist in official arm wrestling. I'm not older than 21
@erickkang6385
@erickkang6385 2 жыл бұрын
Arm wrestling is very much a combat sport now, if those rules that you lay out were followed, you are only using muscle groups for shoulder internal rotation, and elbow internal rotation. You don’t get access your elbow flexion, brachialis, brachioradialis, biceps and all the other muscles groups in the arm

But it's called arm wrestling for a reason. Sure you can win against people stromger than you if you you know just break their wrists but why would you? I was arm wrestling with my friend and she just went for my wrists too and 1. I don't really think it makes sense, defeats the purpose 2. You hurt the other person by applying all the force to their wrist which they obviously can't hold up against. We also had a rematch where we said we wouldn't use it and I won that one. But I'm very stubborn so even when my wrist hurt a lot a still didn't let go and I remember by the end of it it hurt so much I had to write the rest of my notes with my left lol.

#umanitoba

When armwrestling the elbows don't really line up but the shoulders do.you also cannot walk around the table?lol,And in a real match you would be fully standing with elbows at upper waist level.Decent vid though,he never really showed positioning,the most important part finger/high knuckle/thumb positioning at the start.

One thing he failed to mention (and he absolutely must be aware of) is that he is standing while the student is sitting. As my mom would tell me while I sit down to knead or flatten dough, “Stand up! If you sit, all your strength goes to your butt!”. Speaking of flattening dough… now I feel pain in the wrist pushing on a rolling pin, and I think it’s related to the fact that I discovered that “relax the grip and lay the wrist back” cheat, and used it against strong guys. According to my instructor in a different sport, there is a tendon/ligament/soft tissue band that holds everything together in your wrist. If you lay your wrist back and put load on it, the band stretches and never recovers. I think that’s what happened to me. I am neither doctor nor an avid arm wrestler. I used that cheat maybe 5-10 times in my life, so I’d be very careful with that one. It’s possible there is a right and wrong way to do it, of course.

pronating your wrist is never a good thing - that is how a lot of people get carpal tunnel syndrome just from typing (over a significant amount of time though) - you're forfeiting the resistance of your wrist from your muscles to the physical bone and ligaments, which you shouldn't do, same way you shouldn't lock out any joints during pretty much any exercise

im not a doctor and i know you aren't im pretty sure most the things you said are wrong pronation of the wrist is simply any time you internall rotate your wrist/forearm (not how you get carpal tunnel) this professor doesn't go into it in detail but there is a lot to gain in letting your opponent gain ground to launch a counter... also the locking out joints is incorrect too... just a common misconception due to the injury videos you see, but anyone with fitness knowledge will you full range of motion is as far as your muscle can stretch eccentrically and as far as it goes concentrically @@rolls_8798

It's so easy to get away with a few cheats in drunk armwrestling 1. Pull your elbow closer towards you 2. Stand up 3. When pulling down, don't use your arm. Just lean down using your entire body and let the arm follow At 0:33 you can already see old guy's elbow is closer to the edge of the table than the opponent giving him the advantage
