You know you live in a bad era of history when pornhub is more rational than your politician. Pornhub made their website slower today to show how essential net neutrality is.

*sigh* going even further back, federal law used to require decoupling of physical lines and services, meaning that broadband behaved like dial up in that you purchased your line and it could call any ISP you wanted. What this meant was that one could often choose between a dozen or more local broadband providers which actually had to compete with each other for customers.

I bet most of you haven't read what this policy entails. You are being lied to by this balding, effeminate, little man. Net Neutrality is a bad thing & it will actually take away your access to the internet, not allow you more of it. I won't go into serious detail about what this policy actually does and what most of the media is lying about, but quickly *1.* You won't be restricted to only some parts of the web; most ISP's don't restrict you because it violates user agreements, antitrust laws & it gives their competitors an advantage. The moment they decide to restrict you, is the moment another provider offers you a non-net neutral contract and causes them to lose money. That is why the idea that they would charge $9.99 to access something like wikipedia is absurd because they would be shooting themselves in the foot. *2.* NN's regulations kills startup ISP's that want to provide you with cheap service and creates a monopoly for the current big ISP's, giving you less choice of who to buy from. *3.* It kills your choice in products. If you just want to buy a $.99 plan to check your email, you can't do it. Many poor people do not have access to the internet because of this. *4.* It allows the government to regulate like China. The policy dictates that their must be oversight to ensure "equality" and the censorship of anything deemed "harmful" to the public. Anything they don't like will get censored and content providers will be regulated if they are considered to be of higher quality or influence than their competition. Right now we live in a world where we can choose any ISP we want and we have a free and uncensored internet. Net Neutrality means a world where there are few ISPs and a government censored internet.

God - No we don't live live in a world where we can choose any ISP we want. In my area, I have 2 choices, one of which is AT&T, which caps out out at 6mbps, and the other is Comcast. The vast majority of America is in a similar boat. So stop lying.

Actually, it's been proven that without NetNeutrality (NN), the startups have no chance. What stops the big players who control most of the transmission lines from slowing data from competitors... you know, like they've done in the past. (www.theguardian.com/technology/2015/jun/22/major-internet-providers-slowing-traffic-speeds) In addition, NN has ZERO affect on the choice of products. Nothing is stopping providers from providing the $0.99 email-only plan, nor would that be breaking NN laws. Prioritizing data ahead of other data with no consent from the end user is what NN protects. If the user wants an email-only plan, the providers can provide that. Not sure how your logic works that with NN, that the government can censor things. In fact, that seems like the exact OPPOSITE of what NN provides, where the ISP MUST take you to the site you request, whether they like it or not. Now, you ARE correct in that most wouldn't create a subscription plan to certain sites, however, as per the previous article I linked, it certainly is a possibility, no matter how unlikely.

Simplest: Go without cable. You don't need it. Its cheaper to buy the DVD's for the movies you want to watch that aren't on broadcast TV. And go with a cheap phone plan like Track Fone. You don't need more. Do all your net surfing using a laptop while eating at Hooters, Applebees or somewhere else with free WiFi. Minimize the profits of the predatory companies.

I'm reminded of a podcast from cracked not too long ago about how they closed the comment section on an article because "it's our website, we can do what we want, you have no right to speak your mind using our property." Surely a site with a strong sense of property rights up to and including the right to censor content wouldn't be on the side of telling private companies that solely because they're popular they now have to act like a public forum, right? No? At what level of popularity does a private company become a utility? When do you guys think you ought to surrender your editorial powers? How many users before your site has to be a "free and open platform"?

Net Neutrality is a thing that big companies are going to keep trying to get rid of. If not this time maybe next time or the time after that. They're just hoping we the consumer get sick of it and just ignore them and let them do what they want. Did the email, made the calls! only took about 15-20mins from the moment I went to the website! a few of the phone lines had full voice mails, and one of the reps didn't want to take my message because it wasn't my district and they're getting BOMBARDED with calls right now, but I politely asked if I could give my msg anyway, and he said he'd log it, so victory! I just want to say, though, to anyone who does call: please try and remember to be polite and concise when you do so. the people who are taking the calls are just underpaid phone monkies. I do the same job for city government and my mom does it for a governor's office, and I can assure you that these people have no control over anything other then taking your message and getting it logged where it needs to go. I'm sure a great many of them actually AGREE with us, too, because lots of times they aren't hired by the party or the politician if they're at such a low level in the hierarchy, so they could be from ANY political leaning, not just Republican! Treat them kindly, give them your message quickly, and they'll be happier that you didn't fly off the handle like some people assuredly will have already done, and will be much happier to just get your request sent along on it's way without drama or fuss. it might even make their day a little better, and will help our side of the argument seem better in everyone's eyes. 🙂

There is also a trick ISPs do called Zero Rating. This trick is insidious and involves making 'free lanes' basically what they do is that they may not charge for their own services like their own video streaming service, ie it doesn't' count towards that bill, but other services like Netflix will . The trick is to get ISP customers using ISP owned services so they earn more money and will actually give you less choice. There is the thorny issue of peer agreements that is more complicated but for the most part we must support net neutrality. If we don't it might become possible for ISP to provide bouquets of websites that will be at the speed you paid for and all other sites will have reduce speed connections.

Between torrents, kodi and other file sharing, something like net neutrality changes is going to happen. Be honest with yourself and think about the (likely) 10s of thousands of dollars we've stolen by illegally downloading or streaming $20 movies, $15 cra, $3.99 tv episodes. Torrents and Kodi are going to get hit hard. To be completely honest, it's something we brought on ourselves.

Excellent explanation of what happened then... and so, now that 3 months have passed, what is your analysis ? What do we have to look forward to, or not? What's happening now? In general, do you follow up on the story? Thanks.

So, if they have their way, the internet is going to be the 90s again, where you pay by the minute and pay extra for access to websites? Wow, America's dumb.

Ive always wondered, if Net Neutrality becomes revoked in US law, does that not affect everyone who use internet services in pretty much all of the world?

I'll give him.credit for using "literally" correctly. Too bad he couldn't keep his politics out of the piece so that we could be more apt to view it as honest. BTW, I never noticed the blackout or slowdown. They must have been dizzily effective.

Actually, it's not just about "old, wealthy white men" - Ajit Pai isn't very old, and he's definitely not white (but I wouldn't be surprised if he's wealthy).

Cracked, please tell the editors to equalize the sound on these pieces, it's impossible to tell what you're saying with how quiet your audio is, and then the transitions are just ear fuckery of the highest order.

it feels like every time the repeal gets beat it resurfaces some time later, like a money vs apathy endurance match. Is there a way to get this permanently fixed or will protecting net neutrality be a constant issue until the people seeking to profit from it find a better (easier) way of profiting off of something else?

Remember the Golden Rule. If you have the gold, you make the rules. If you have the money, you can keep lobbying Congress. Which is still cheap for them to do because the potential profits are astronomical.

but that's what confuses me it's still a band-aid solution open to concessions. the public remains in a constant state of defense against the isp. it just seems like there's no real way currently to challenge them without begging congress/gov reps to defend us. i hope someone comes up with some kind of plan/solution/alternative that won't leave the public feeling as impotent as it does now.

I kind of just realized how much of a selfish shit I am. I was thinking like "oh no I cant watch shitty youtube shows or play outdated multiplayer games or jack it to whatever perversion popped into my head (nipple rings?)." I completely forgot my 59 year old mother was learning photography on youtube, I taught my 64 year old aunt how to pay bills online( she doesnt speak much English its easier for her online), my cousin was looking for shows on youtube for his 2 year old son so I told him about pocoyo. My point is that for some of us the internet is a work portal, an educational portal, an entertainment portal, a social portal, or a communication portal. I cant think of anyone that would be against keeping this as utility. Also, WHY AREN'T EDUCATORS UP IN ARMS ABOUT THIS! HOW WILL THEY EXPECT STUDENTS TO STUDY WITH OUT THE INTERWEBS!
