Just did some fun math. Your average garden snail moves at about 0.048 km/h. Since day 1 of the invasion, about 3800 hours have passed (Aug 1, 2022). In that time, a snail could have covered about 180 km and thus out-paced most of the Russian Army.

Day 1 was like watching a semi truck heading towards a VW beatle at 200mph. Everyone was totally expecting a massacre. I know I was. I was only curious how the west would respond to the total conquest/annihilation of Ukraine. But then it was like when the truck hit the beatle, it just flips right over it, lands upside down, and skids across the pavement until a spark ignites the gas tank and the truck bursts into flames. It's pleasantly surprising... but makes me worried that this is some kind of trick. But how? Why would Putin so spectacularly burn his own army and economy?

Ironically, this comment of yours actually describes the situation within the command structure of the Russian army unironically. Just like in China, no one wants to report bad news, at the risk of being blamed for it and being punished. So everyone with any kind of responsibility will be sure to sugarcoat, conceal, disguise, and masquerade the bad, at the same time taking any kind of positive information, making sure to enhance and magnify while taking credit for it all. This seems to be a common theme for Russia for the past 100 years. The Russo-Japanese War of 1904 was a massively humiliating defeat for Russia. Then Stalin made the terrible decision to invade Finland before doing the required preparation and due diligence. After an embarrassing loss, Stalin shifts all of the blame to the military officers. He kept doing that throughout WW2. Then the invasion of Afghanistan in 1979, without solid thorough preparation of their opponent. Again in Chechnya and Georgia, and now Ukraine. Entering a conflict without the proper preparation, often resulting in embarrassing and devastating losses and defeats.

If Russia had a clue of how to make efficient equipment, learn logistics, and had efficient soldiers they could be one of (if not the) most powerful militaries. Problem is they can't do any of that. They are years behind countries like the US and Germany, especially in terms of tactics. Trench warfare in the 2000s? Heck, they are still using an engine from the 1930s in their main tanks.

Fun fact: What Russia is doing now is very simmilar to the soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968. Capture airport close to the capital, fly in troops, kidnap the goverment, force regime change. This was their plan (in 1968 they did no missile strikes, because they were allies of Czechoslovakia so it was a backstab). Its amazing how a country that prouds itself on its super duper KGB spy school failed so miserably to gain the simple intel of "Ukraine will fight" and "You willl not get into Kyijiv city center within the first week of the invasion". I bet that Putin truly and honestly expected to march into Kyjiv, face some civilian protesters he could shoot, kidnap the goverment of Ukraine and declare victory. Instead it has been almost a year of absolute massacre with no end in sight...

During the Cold War it was pretty common for the Pentagon to massively talk up Soviet capabilities because it justified their own calls for more money and cutting edge weaponry like the ridiculous SDI boondoggle. The CIA meanwhile tended to be much more accurate and realistic, pointing out that many of these supposed new weapons were actually just research projects or that the vast numbers of aircraft/tanks/missiles that the Soviets had supposedly deployed didn't exist and the real numbers were a fraction of that. It was the same in the USSR where elements of the military and weapons manufacturers pushed for greater spending on new toys to counter threats from America that weren't real. When Soviet rocket scientists appraised the Space Shuttle they were baffled that it even existed because it didn't make sense - never coming close to achieving its design goals and costing far too much for what it could actually do. Meanwhile the military and associated industry were pushing the narrative that it was a weapon, either for delivering a nuclear first strike without warning, or as a way of capturing Soviet satellites. The Soviet leadership bought the lies and committed to vast spending to counter a non-existent threat in part because of this fear mongering but also because they gave they Americans too much credit and couldn't believe that they'd have spent so much on a program that couldn't even replace what they already had, which could only mean it had some other secret capability.

I was following the work of some pretty well-recognized experts in the field (whom I won't name but I suspect you'd recognize them) in the run-up to this renewed invasion, and as you know they have been proven devastatingly wrong on how this would go on H-hour. Some have admitted their miscalculations, others are coping and you can almost see them with fingers crossed, hoping for a big Russian win because their credibility's on the line. I was in Kyiv about ten days before it kicked off, when it was reported that the invasion would come at any moment, and I too remembered being worried that some time during the night the power would go out, internet and cell service would go offline, etc. Turns out none of that happened. In general, I think the problem was these experts made too many assumptions based on watching Russian staged drills on TV Zvezda, and they also assumed the Russians would fight the war like we would fight the war- something like Desert Storm. Also side note- a friend of mine was misidentified in a viral social media pic as the Ghost of Kyiv. He's just a war correspondent who happened to be standing in front of a Mig-29 while wearing a balaclava. Anyway, love your work as always and I point people to it whenever I get the chance. if you watch his speech given at invasion kick off you can see his game. What does he really want? He wants the old Soviet empire back under the guise of Russian Federation. He wants the warm water port of Crimea and he needs land that supplies Crimea with easy access to food, water, power, etc. Throw in the fact Ukraine found gas and oil fields and was getting ready to compete with Russia for energy supplies to Europe AFTER Russia worked with Germany to build a gas pipeline that avoided Ukraine (don't want to pay those pesky "right to self-rule" royalties on Russian gas) entirely. So it's a bit of nostalgia, a bit of greed, and a bit of megalomania all wrapped up in psychotic Russian nationalism. Whee!

@@lexwaldez It has nothing to do with that, that's the propaganda motive they're selling you to justify a war because if not the USSR will come back and take over the world. It's the Cuban Missile Crisis but in reverse, imagine if Cuba joined the Soviet Union and became a missile site and military base during the cold war, that would have instantly launched a US invasion. As hard as it's been for me to realize this because we've been so propagandized to, if you hold onto your principles and understand the laws of war then invasion for the purposes of self defense is legal and morally acceptable. Ukraine is a corrupt puppet state and this whole adventure is squarely on the US government, it's corrupt and has to do with Biden getting a big payout if Ukraine joins the EU and all those stolen resources find investment and labor to extract it, beyond that there's a huge need to distract from his abyssmal failures at home and so many interests aligned with pushing for war, the MiC and corrupt elites that have their own vested interests. The great reset being one, rations on fuel meat and power, higher taxes and more wealth transfer to the top in order to create neo-feudalism, elites that own everything and then you toiling away every day for scraps. If you thought the Cuban Missile crisis was a lunatic step towards nuclear armageddon when Khruschev tried it and then capitulated to Kennedy then you better believe that the US shoulders the same blame and more because they did not back down like the USSR did in the fifties. Can you imagine Cuba becoming part of the Soviet Union and housing soviet military bases and missile sites, and Cuba is still seperated by the Florida straits. And now that Russia doesn't show superpower levels of prowess, you can compare it to Desert Storm, which was basically a Superpower and its allies all ganging up on the army of a Warsaw proxy? . Does Russia try to throw its weight around and want to regain its USSR glory? Yes. But the sane Russians aren't deluded when it comes to what the reality is.

20+ years USAF here... in my wildest dreams I never imagined how incompetent Russia would prove to be at war fighting. At this point, with the equipment Russia presumably has, there absolutely should not be a single threat to their aircraft beyond random MANPADS. The most confusing and depressing part of this war is the POW interrogations, the majority of the troops are young boys born after 2000, from infantry to tank crews. What's even worse is the paratroopers saying they didn't know they were invading. It's unusual since Russia does have combat hardened soldiers, but instead we've got teenagers marching into machine gun nests.

Sad we constantly have to say "No I don't support Russia" when just urging caution in taking everything as fact. I talked to someone whom I have been able to tell the most offensive, over the top jokes with for five years now. Someone I have had a lot of polite disagreements with over the years even on hot button topics. I said "Imagine hating Russia for their stance on gay rights and unsubtle white nationalist overtones, volunteering to help the Ukrainians fight them, and getting saddled up with the Azov Battalion." They legit didn't know who that was. I explained. I must have said 'allegedly' like 27 times because I am not going to believe what the western media, Ukraine or Russia has to say on the matter and that filtering fact and propaganda is probably impossible. "Because a country with a Jewish president would be in league with neo-nazis." Explained that when your back is against the wall you aren't picky about who you ally with, I have no horse in this race. Was politely informed by discord that that message didn't go through because they don't receive messages from people not on their friends list. Still kinda stunned about that. Reminds me of ye olden days when talking about the lack of WMDs in Iraq meant you wanted Saddam to genocide the Kurds or something.

As a former War Thunder player, I have some suggestions for the top-tier Soviet tank tree to simulate realism. When playing Tier VI-VII Soviets: - Random chance to run out of gas - Random chance to break down - Random chance the crew will abandon the tank - The battle map is disabled or displays an obsolete version. - Radio comms from other players are disabled, while your comms are broadcast to everyone. - Due to there being much less quantity than advertised, T-80/T-90 players may randomly spawn in T-72s - If a player from Ukraine spawns in the match, there's a random chance your tank/helicopter/jet will explode - If you drive off the map, your tank gets towed away by a Gypsy in a tractor.

These include but are not limited to: - running out of motorized - not putting up air - attacking with tanks through the marshes of northern Ukraine - force attacking while divisions are still training - losing a fuckton of equipment to attrition, some of which was just yoinked by local farmers using tractors Honestly the only reason the Russians are a second-rate power and not a 3rd rate power is their giant nuclear arsenal. Otherwise the US and China would totally eat their lunch in the great power game.

And your comment won't age well, just like your PoV. While you are being brainwashed by mass media, Russia is "losing" the war by pushing hard and soon to encircle Kyiv. Not even saying that they finally clearing up Marioupol and finally made it possible to get humanitarian corridors running after pushing back Azov shitters. Keep trusting the lies, keep on lacking critical thinking.

@Shinshocks Ehm... So victory for you seems to be "complete annihilation"? Russia has made their demands public and they are negotiating it every few days, but nothing changes and they won't go for anything less than 3 claims they have announced. As soon as Kyiv agrees to all three - that's going to be victory. And they will agree to all of it when Kyiv will be under the siege and things will be looking grim. ETA - anywhere from two weeks up to the end of May, but hardly doubt they will last till May (btw, May dates are provided by Ukrainian side).

What's funny. This war makes it clear the scenario of a handful of random highscool boys with hunting gear could humiliate Russia's military like in the movie Red Dawn. Isn't as far fetched and unrealistic as we may have originally thought.

@kaiserlowa

Been a year but seeing how the war has been going. Its still pretty accurate... Militia can be very useful in the right circumstances... But Red Dawn should have ended in a nuclear exchange, its magical that somehow the US and Soviets agree to not nuke each other in such a situation. not even a a single defensive tactical nuke hitting the border or something. But paratroopers are pretty light-weight, they should not be anywhere near as effective as they are in HOI4. Don't care how "well-trained" they may be, you need weight to push into places. Operation Market Garden PROVED that problem.

Soviet army back in the day was real, just because Russia is a shell of its former self doesn't mean that post ww2 soviet forces weren't extremely competent. That's how we got to this position really. Because when we finally got to see behind the curtain we found that they were far more than we had hoped. That surprise was folded into ww2 sentiment and became the modern russian superiority complex that let them completely wither away.

Another great example of total Air Supremacy achieved in a single day was Israel in the 6 Days War with Operation Focus. Despite being heavily outnumbered by Jordan, Egyptian, and Syrian Air Forces, the Israelis achieved air dominance almost immediately by quickly and strategically targeting air infrastructure. Within 5 hours, Israel had destroyed almost 450 aircraft and damaged 18 airfields, effectively crippling the enemy before they even had a chance to strike. As a result, Israel had total Air Authority, and won the 6 Day’s War in large part due to their control of the skies. Shows just how important first strikes are in modern warfare.

This is just what’s been scraped together by a group looking through videos and photos aswell as digging to confirm they’re legit, so the real number is probably higher. About half are described as merely “abandoned” so they may have been recovered by Russia, or destroyed/ captured by ukraine.
