I bought this 2009 Chevy Cobalt off craigslist for $1000. Let's see if it makes the 2 hour drive home, and if it is junk!

I think you got a good deal. Honestly, with the dirty seats, the beginning rust( which I hope you will treat), the loud wheel bearings and the bad blower and the dented hood in the front, I would not have wanted to pay a penny more for it. The good points for the car which you mentioned are all good: great gas mileage, good standard transmission, decent power, and good motor! I'm in! Best of luck with this one.
@scottdavis_343 жыл бұрын
I owned a 2005 Cobalt that I kept for about 10 years. Overall it was a pretty good car. The only issue I had with mine was the HVAC blower motor. I had to have mine replaced twice. The bearings are notorious for going out on them. To further complicate things the motor is encased in a plastic housing which has to be cut to get to it. I had to chuckle a bit when I heard you mention the fan.
@VincesDIYsAroundtheHouse3 жыл бұрын
Nice ride for for the money! You can test the wheel bearings by cornering. It usually will get louder or quieter when cornering depending on which side is bad.

Great deal. Bought my daily driver 08 crown vic for $1k too. Cheap cars can be good too. I've been looking in the $5-6k range lately to find something newer and a lot of cars aren't in any better shape than my $1k beater.
@802Garage3 жыл бұрын
"I'm gonna stick with the $1,000. And we settled on that." Hahaha so good. Cobalts def aren't my fav, but good little rigs overall. $100 isn't bad for sure. Main complaints I know of other than cheap and rusty are uncomfortable seats that wear out. My aunt's car all the button faces are worn off too. I don't love the interiors, but it just needs to work right? Really cool though that it's a stick shift and gets such great MPG. Can't really argue with that!
@ARuralVermonterQqjmcb1823 жыл бұрын

Just have to listen for timing chain noise on the Ecotec engines, but this is a 2009 which was the 1st year GM put VVT on the 2.2L's and I haven't seen as many 09-10 models with that issue as I have the earlier 2.2L Ecotec versions. These were crappy but reliable little beater cars though, just as durable as any Corolla for sure, I'll give them that much.

HVAC fan issue is likely the blower motor resistor, which should be about $20-50, and may involve splicing 10 or so wires. I replaced the resistor on my '06 GMC Envoy and it restored operation on all 5 speed settings, where previously it had dropped to only operating on settings 1 and 2.
@Tim.White163 жыл бұрын
Check the resistor block for the blower motor, chevy blower motor resistors tend to go around 140k miles or so

Good choice! Still its sad to see how rusty cars can get on your side. In northern Europe its the same, so much salt and bad roads just eats the cars. I would love to see it getting a little bit refreshed- a little bit of cleaning and visual defects repairing. :) Have a nice day and greetings from Germany!
@CookedTickabc3 жыл бұрын
Nice score! I got a 04 ion and the cobalt and ion are pretty much the same car I'm averaging about 38 mpg but I'm a leadfoot, 2.2 ecotec with a 5 speed manual thing has a aftermarket racing clutch and it's pretty good
@mds24653 жыл бұрын
That’s a great deal for a car like that. Especially with a standard transmission, the weak point on those is the automatics but with a standard those things are pretty bulletproof. Of course you have the typical New England rust which is to be expected from a lot of cars up here, but I’ve definitely seen a lot worse that one’s not too bad. Congrats!
