I feel like you have to identify the pathogen before you destroy it. Each one has a specific way in which they need to be destroyed in order for them to be no longer transmitted so identification would be a vital part of their destruction. I feel like the CDC refused to identify them until the court order so the pathogens actual identity wouldn’t need to become public knowledge, perhaps to prevent panic but not knowing feels way worse. It also causes us to lose faith in an organization we are told to quite literally trust with our lives.

Bio stuff shouldn't be too hard, thermal inactivation works universally afaik. Mixed waste is more of a hassle - if there's a notable amount of toxic, reactive, radioactive, etc stuff mixed with the bio waste you can't just autoclave or incinerate it. It's still in an illegal lab's best interests to label hazardous substances imo. They generally want their workers alive, unexploded, and not caught so they can keep working. Weird shady disasters do happen though.

Nah, it's common practice in labs that anything without a label is destroyed because trying to mess around with something you don't know the identity of is a risk and it is safer to just immediately dispose of it. Obviously there's a standard way to safely dispose of these risks. I am not saying this to defend the CDC, they definitely should have been more thorough and done their jobs properly. Especially when there was clearly a filled fridge labelled ebola. But I can at least understand them disposing of anything unlabelled immediately because they don't know what it is and don't want to risk releasing something unknown by messing around with it.

It's sadly not uncommon, even on our side. When I started dating my husband he was a chemist/bioengineering student. He took me to to the labs one night because he forgot something. I picked up a medical tube and asked him what it was and nearly dropped it when he nonchalantly answered "Anthrax." He enjoyed my face as I looked desperately for a safe place to put it down. He then explained it was a dead and not a big deal. That lab resembles the world class lab my husband worked, just a few notches down, more chaotic. I don't know the politics of labs and the cdc but I suspect this is a great big nothing burger. The cdc and the US government no doubt have their fingers all up in this pie. The whole thing is probably owned by the cdc or one of the universities, labeled in a foreign tongue to throw people off.
