Jack Horner was a comedic villan. He doesnt need a good motive. Him not having a good motive makes his character better.
@claralima1967
@claralima1967 Жыл бұрын
Exactly! That's the whole point of him, he's not there to have a sad backstory or hidden morals, he's not supposed to go "oh, this is all a trauma response". We already have three characters for that (Puss, Kitty and Goldie). He literally says "yeah, I'll shoot this puppy right in the face" and he's having a blast. I think it was really nice to step away from the sympathetic villain and just have a full on, unapologetic jerk laughing his way into murder

Nah, I liked Jack Horner. He added balance to the characters in the film. I'm tired of the Disney trend the past few years of not having villains. Its fun to have comically evil villains who are evil just for the sake of being evil. Death technically wasn't a bad guy, he was just doing his job and Goldilocks and the bears weren't evil either (since Goldie's wish was based on good intentions). They were more like rivals to Puss and Kitty.

Horner also was the reason goldi gave up the wish as he was the one who almost flung baby out the star and is why they all decided to rip up the map. Its hard to see puss or kitty intentionally trying to kill them like that and death was only there for puss. So jack was pretty important to finishing goldis arc

I headcanon that Kitty made *that* thing up with *that* incident to make Puss in Boots feel better, because she forgave him and wanted him to move on. Just doesn't make sense for her entire arc to be based around that just for it to be waved aside, and I think it makes a lot more narrative sense.

That was what i was wonderng too but then I asked my brother what he thought and he said that she didn;t make it up and instead, knew that puss wouldnt show up to the altar so she didnt show up either. She wasnt actually upset that he left the altar, she was just upset in general about puss putting himself before everyone else. She didnt show up to the altar because she knew Puss wouldnt show up. And how She knew that Puss didnt show up to the altar could've been that she saw from afar that he didn't show, or it could've been that she found out after that he didn't show up like whoever was at the wedding couldve told her ect... Sure its hypocritical that she didn't show up either, but if you were with someone that you knew was selfish and you coudn't compete with their one true love; themselves, then you probably would assume that they wouldn't be there for you and would walk out too right?

100% agree with you about Puss in Kitty. They were both entertaining and had great chemistry with each other in the first movie, but this movie actually allows the two of them to be really compelling characters in a way that I haven't seen done this well since Hiccup and Astrid in How to Train Your Dragon. Great job!

I disagree about Jack Horner being a weak villain, he acts as a counter weight to the rest of the cast and their deep motivations while providing neccesary levity by simply being pure evil and funny af, a rarity with villains these days.

Jack Hornner is what really carried the comedy for me just mainly because of there interactions with other characters and his overall tone. I mean even death had the heart to let puss go and that should tell you somthing. Not to mention he is a pretty good looming threat, i mean there is a reason he has all those fairy tale artifacts. so I think he adds that perfect amount of spice to the film in contrast to every other character

Jack Horner was my favorite villain in this movie. I know everyone praises the wolf, who I think is awesome, but jack Horner with his completely selfish and illegitimate motives tied with his complete lack of care for others makes him such a peak comedic villain. And even though he is pretty comedic, he is still very threatening because like I said, he cares for absolutely nothing except himself as seen by how he literally does not give a shit that he got 12 people killed. And him pulling out Excalibur with the stone still on made me laugh out loud. I thought he served his purpose so well, and all the villains were masterfully done and served each of their own purposes so well. With Goldilocks and the bears being the redeemable and heartwarming ones, death being the intimidating yet not actually intrinsically evil, and jack Horner just being completely merciless and hilarious.

I saw this movie recently for my birthday and I have to say I was genuinely surprised by how much I loved it! The score, the animation, Puss’ character arc, his and Kitty’s dynamic, the villains, the voice acting (especially from Antonio Banderas. You’re right! He does *not* miss a beat!), and how can I forget Perrito? Sure, it was a bit much to take in, but maybe I just need to watch it again! Overall, 9/10, one of the better DreamWorks movies to come out this decade, along with The Bad Guys!

Love what you said. Perrito has a charm completely different from Donkey I feel. As well as Puss and Kitty’s dynamic being a surprising new favorite of mine. I do think Kitty has trust issues though, so regardless of hypocrisy if she has went or not, she’d still bear a grudge. I do think Jack is the epitome of having a void in his life that he can only satisfy through external validation/collecting his trinkets and power. Similar to Puss but more bankrupt morally.

I liked Jack Horner. He really wasn't a commentary on capitalism so much as a poke at Hollywood's attempt to make every damn villain sympathetic. He's just a straight up unapologetic mega douche. Though he does suffer in comparison to every other character which are just great. I hope Death never makes a reappearance in this franchise or if he does, they don't water him down or trivialize him.
@CosmicShadowMari0
@CosmicShadowMari0 Жыл бұрын
While I'm usually one to recognize critique of capitalism in media, I don't really think that that was the purpose of Jack Horner in this movie! On one hand I do agree with what so many in the comments are saying- he's hilarious, and it's nice to see a good 'ol-fashioned irredeemable monster of a villain. On the other hand, he does serve an extremely relevant purpose to the themes of the movie! If Goldie represents learning to treasure what's in your life, Jack Horner is about a total DISREGARD of life. He doesn't care about anything that has made his life so comfortable, taking it all for granted, going as far as to repeatedly accidentally kill his own minions to really drive it home. At the beginning of the movie Puss is so invested in his legendary status that he cares more about the cheers he's getting than the people behind those cheers- forgetting what city he's in, stepping on their faces, and pumping up his ego. Jack Horner reinforces a mindset of what Puss grows out of for the entire movie. Sure, he himself is simple, but so was Puss. Depth is added to Puss, and Horner does not grow. I just don't think the movie works as well without that!

I really enjoyed this movie! That being said, it is in no way perfect and still has only a couple things it could have done better. Such as having John Mulaney as the voice of "Big" Jack Horner; it didn't work for me - I just couldn't take that voice seriously...and I found it to be a little annoying. A better voice might have been...someone like Kevin James. I while I did love the Wolf, I wish they would have used someone else as the physical embodiment of Death. Because I don't see Death, I see just another version of The Big Bad Wolf. They could have used someone like Xibalba (the Mayan god of death), that to me would have been better - and they could have taken design inspirations from Tzekel-Kan and his acolyte (from "The Road to El Dorado"). I also was not a fun of the animation, because we've seen Puss and his companions in traditional 3D animation, so to suddenly see them in a different style...it just didn't work for me. The worst for me was Perrito because comic-reliefs are almost done wrong. I mean, Perrito looked, talked, and acted like a moron. There is nothing wrong with someone being friendly, happy and positive...but that doesn't mean they also have to be naive and idiotic. Why didn't they just make Perrito happy-go-lucky because whenever he was stayed positive something good things always happened to him? The only times where he actually comforted Puss was when he was good, and I wish he was better at it because he even admitted that he wanted to be a therapy dog. I even wished there was just a little more time to rebuild the chemistry between Puss and Kitty - and I wish they actually kissed, much like they did in the first film. I did like the twist they did with Goldilocks and the Three Bears, but the whole reference to their story got old real quickly; also the bears could of had just a bit more brains. And while it is small...I didn't like the new mask they gave Kitty, and should have stuck with the black one. Finally the whole name "Team Friendship" was just stupid. That being said I loved how much darker and more mature this movie was than all its predecessors. My favorite parts were always when the Wolf was on screen. I was also shocked to hear so many beeping/swears in the movie, as well as the "body count". I hope other kid movies start taking notes from this. And while I did find Jack Horner to be a spoiled brat, I did find him to be a believable villain because of how heartless and egotistical he was. The same goes with Death - I really wish he was given a bigger role. The action was pretty fun to watch, and I like the message they were trying to get across: "live your life to the fullest, and be happy with what you have." And I guess the animation worked every now and than, and most of the voice acting was done very well. I really did enjoy watching this movie, and so the good stuff outweigh the annoying stuff. It seemed to me that there was more to be told, which is why I wish it was a little longer. I also wish that Puss and Kitty prepared to redo their wedding, and planned on having a littler (and what they would name them). I would gladly love see another movie with Puss and Kitty going on another adventure together.

I personally found jack horner to be very funny. I think you misread him as being some sort of warning against capitalism, that’s not at all true. He’s just a character written to be so incredibly evil he’s funny. That’s the point, and it works well, showing how evil he is, the fact that all of his henchmen die brutally and his actual conscience ditches him and helps to defeat him makes it even better.

Horner, the genuine, real villain, is something story telling needs to return to desperately. This nonsense of there being no 'true' villains, bad for being bad's sake has to stop, it's the real 'weak' nonsense. Irredeemable bad guys is a fact of life, stop trying to pretend these sorts of people do not exist and that portraying them in stories is somehow 'bad or weak' story telling when it is quite the opposite.

I think it's a taste thing. I for one, really liked the resolution of the Death ark being that Puss got enough character development so that Wolf's own morals didn't let him finish the job, instead of being defeated outright in some way. Also metaphorically the action in thay scene works amazingly and elevates the scene so much. But while I found him somewhat entertaining, I do 100% agree that the film could benefit from not having Horner (maybe replacing his role in fight scense with natural obstacles from the Forrest or something). Glad to hear that someone thinks the same and I'm not insane.

What Disney, Pixar or Dreamworks movie has an hour-long PSA about the LGBTQ community? But I agree, even as a part of the LGBTQ, I don't like for the LGBTQ characters to be solely that and not just be a character that happens to be a part of the LGBTQ. I feel like some people think that's how to represent it when it's just annoying. A good example of a well-written series with loveable LGBTQ characters is Arcane.
