If you're curious, my friend Tristan over at / @thediycabinguy helped me realize that the loads on the rafters and roof system would be a little sketchy. If you're wanting to know how an engineer builds a cabin, you'll love his stuff!
I think a more basic design for this build makes sense. The windows fit,

Holy Woodness Splitpersonalityness baby!!!! I always knew there was something off with you big G but that is why we love ya lol. There is always a fix for the semi professional amateur!!! All you had to do is ask you architect and she would have made a sketch for you in crayon and you would have been set. Nice job on the cabin and thanks for keeping us entertained brother and keep getting after it.

Yet again. Another creative and fantastic episode. Personally, I’m glad you are not building the A-frame; so much unusable space. I know your “ tower-of-power” will not go to waste. It can become blocking between rafters, door and window framings, wood shed, furniture for the cabin and even firewood. The possibilities are endless. I like how you roll and are willing to change things up and be willing to try new ideas. That’s how you achieve GREATNESS. ❤

Woodness Goodness when you pick up a wall by yourself, first put a 2x4 on the outside edge going straight up and screw it at the bottom, then take a 2x4 about 6' away and screw another 2x4 at the bottom on the outside and then screw that 2x4 to the first 2x4 to make a triangle on the side and do this on both sides. Now when you lift the wall it will be in place and in between the 2 triangle 2x4s you made. Now walk to the outside edge with your drill on your belt and screws in your pocket and screw the triangle 2x4 to the wall to hold it in place while you walk to the other side and screw the other side. This will hold the wall in place while you have time to screw down the wall permanently. I use framing guns with nails for framing then EVERYTHING ELSE gets screwed with screws and if they are in treated lumber I use exterior deck screws because they are made for outdoor weather. That way you know its secure and you can always unscrew it.

You're intro skit was epic. Great job pivoting to a better design to suit the FREE windows. Good thing you didn't listen to Devil Graeme. I agree, the trees enclosed in the deck will be marvelous. If you build a wraparound deck to the view side, big french doors that open up the whole space would be incredible too. Lots to decide.

I understand. Been working on plans for my 6/12 skillion post and beam square saddle notched masonry earth ship. Wanted 6 foot north wall but standard door heights. And needing room for egress windows. And can only span 15'3" on 2x12 rafters for snow loads. So had to loose 32" inches and add extra bent in the center. And down 4 feet was still in sand so had to go 6'8" down for my piers.

Next time you stand a wall toe nail the plate to the floor before you stand it up so it dosent move. Or nail a board proud to the floor on the beam to back up to so it dosent slide off the deck. Also your supports for keeping your wall straight use nails next time it’s faster to put up and take down, just have to hit the board with a hammer and they will fall off instead of having to get a ladder and take every screw out.

Using a speed square to keep your saw straight 🤯 I wish I had thought of that when I built my A-frame last summer. Watching your videos inspired me to do it (if this goofy dude can do it all alone then I can, too). My A-frame is only 140 sq ft and does have a loft and it DOES look super cool but in hindsight I wish I would have built something more practical. I’m so excited to see your cabin come together!

If you want a bit more useful space above at the loft level, build a 3’ or 4’ wall above the floor/ceiling joists. And set your rafted on those walls. They can make a big different in how functional the loft space will feel.

You are amazing as a one-man wrecking/erecting crew! A few thoughts: Do you really want your entrance door and porch focused on an outhouse? I strongly recommend either a second door, or at least an egress-sized window, for safety's sake. You did right by not capping those lower walls, as that would leave you with a very weak wall, structurally. I love that you are not afraid to back up when necessity calls for it! Great job so far. Thanks!

In my opinion its way easer to use nail gun instead of screws to pin the brace when leveling the walls. Way less risk in loosing level than using screw driver, atleast thats the way i have always done it. Also being one guy maybe you could build the walls in place? Set the floor plate, corner studs, top plate then install studs. You will have to be toenailing the studs insted of end nailing which is stronger anyhow. Sorry i couldnt help my self from attempted to interfere. I figure if he will take advice from his clone maybe he will listen to me? I enjoy your content!!!

That snake is a sub-species of North American Racer. I’m not sure you’re exact location but I think you are right in the area where it could be a southern or northern black racer. There are quite a few other types of racers around the country but only those two in the general area where I think you are. They are cool snakes. Totally harmless to humans. They are super fast, as their name indicates, and they will eat anything they can overpower including other snakes - even venomous ones. Pretty cool you put some tin down 👍 There is no telling what you’ll find out there.

Your land looks like a perfect wildlife habitat, so there's no telling how many species of snakes you have. There is a KZfaqr down in the Atlanta area called NKFherping who herps/looks for all types of snakes and other creatures. You might find it interesting because he travels all over the southeast, so what he finds would generally be applicable to your land. Love your channel. Keep doing what you're doing.
