Dino’s Tinker Shed, S1-Ep15. Installing an ACERBIS fuel tank on a DR650
In this episode I show you how to install a 20 liter ACERBIS fuel tank on a DR650.
Over the course of the video, I will talk about several items which you can skip to using the Time code chapters below. This is a very common DR650 mod and can give you a range of close to 400km as well as making the bike look much better in my opinion.
TIME CODE CHAPTERS:
00:00- Cold opening
01:03- Intro
01:24- Overview
02:20- Why do you need a big tank?
04:33- Features of an ACERBIS fuel tank
05:13- Parts included with the tank
05:51- Parts you will need to provide
06:28- Review of instructions
06:55- Cleaning the inside of the tank
07:48- Installing the petcock
09:40-Removing the factory tank
15:33- Looking under the tank
15:46-Removal of the front tank shield
16:34- Checking clearances for the new tank
17:05- New tank install
19:50- Addressing the vacuum petcock hose
20:35- Installing fuel lines
21:11- Modifying the turn signals for clearance
24:41- Transferring fuel from old tank
25:12- Summary
26:04- Karl wants his bike back

A couple things to add. I installed the same tank on my 2019 a couple weeks ago. It's a great opportunity to check valve adjustment when you have the tank off the bike. It'll maybe add 30 minutes to the job but save a full disassembly later. Also, dry fit that little seat tab before installing on the tank. I have a Seat Concepts seat and the slot that slides onto the tab is too narrow. I had to grind a small amount off each side of the tab to make it fit. Last thing, I added preload adjustment caps to the front forks to compensate for the extra weight of the fuel. Makes a big difference when braking hard. A great improvement in range, I now get 350 km before hitting reserve up from 200 km. Let us know how that tour up north goes. Oh ya, make sure Karl remembers to turn the fuel on before driving off. It's embarrassing to stall out at a stop light......

Your instructional video is excellent! Thank you. Without it I would have been in a heap of trouble doing my own tank installation, which I will attempt as soon as the tank gets here tomorrow. You explain the process clearly, with a calm voice that inspires confidence. A little bit of humor also helps. Living in an apartment complex I will probably get fined for doing this in the parking lot; it would still be worth it! Thank you and will be looking forward to your other videos. 👍🏻

I've wanted a bike since I was a kid and a friend of mine recently had me out on a little Yamaha 230 putting about in his father in law's fields; to make sure I'd actually enjoy riding before taking the plunge and getting a license. Hello. I have a question about the vacuum hose. What to do with it? I have an Acerbis tank with a tap without a vacuum hose. I have a vacuum-controlled carburetor. How to make everything work well?
@DinosTinkerShed
@DinosTinkerShed 2 жыл бұрын
The easiest fix is to simply bent the hose in half and zip tie it, this is similar to how you can bend over a garden hose to stop the water. When I updated the carb with a pro cycle jet kit in a later video I replaced the vacuum hose all together and used a vacuum cap to close off the port. These are available at most automotive stores or online on Amazon. Hope this helps and thank you for the great question. Dino

@DinosTinkerShed
@DinosTinkerShed 2 жыл бұрын
@@damiansuchecki2523 another great question. The port on the carb that you are plugging is only there to provide vacuum to the factory petcock. Plugging this port does nothing to impact the carbs other systems. If you think about it, during normal operations the line would pull a vacuum on the petcock diaphram to open the fuel , if the diaphragm is not damaged, no air passes by it and essentially the vacuum line is pulling on a capped end. Does this make sense? Dino

Hey Dino, is the carby vacuum hose the smaller hose coming out of the top of the carby? If so it looks like mine was never sealed up. Bike running fine though, what's the consequence of not having it sealed? ATB Jason 👍
@DinosTinkerShed
@DinosTinkerShed Жыл бұрын
Hi Jason, nice to hear from you. I thought that hose ran over to your vacuum petcock (if I am thinking of the right hose). not capping it off would create a vacuum leak that could impact throttle response and may allow dirt to enter the carby on top of the diaphragm. I would think you would want to cap that off. It may be that the DR produced enough Vacuum that throttle response is not impacted and that is why you have not really noticed but I would cap it off just to be safe. Thank you for reaching out Jason, please keep me posted as to performance changes if you do cap it off, I would be curious to know. Dino

@@DinosTinkerShed Well, after sealing off that vacuum hose with a long tight fitting screw I've not noticed any significant difference in how the bike responds. Maybe the vacuum is simply used to draw fuel into the system and doesn't play any other part. Blocking it off is just to prevent contaminants getting into the carby. Thats my conclusion 😁

Hi Dino, I just installed the 25L acerbis tank on my 2020 DR. I have the same setup only i'm running 2 pepcocks. After getting it all together and firing it up, it starts with the choke on , but if I let off the choke all the way, it quits on me. bit of a lag when I roll on the throttle too. Any ideas what could be causing this? Did I not ziptie the carb hose enough or something? Any ideas would be great. Cheers!
@DinosTinkerShed
@DinosTinkerShed 2 жыл бұрын
I would start with the vacuum hose. if any vacuum gets pulled into it it can mess with the carb. I eventually bought some vacuum caps for mine to eliminate any potential problems. I would next check that you have enough fuel in the tank for the "on" position to pick up, if your not sure switch to the "RES" on both petcocks and see if that helps, it may be having fuel scavenging issues if there is not enough fuel. One thing I noticed with my Safari tank, that has two petcocks as well, is that it seems to run better with both petcocks open rather than just one side at a time. Not sure why but it does, do you have both open at the same time? If you put in-line fuel filters, they have a flow direction so double check that they are not in backward. Lastly I removed the small filter that is in the fuel pipe on the carb itself, did you remove this or leave it in. it may have pulled in some crud when swapping the tanks so check to see if it is clean. Hope this helps to solve the issue, please let me know if it does. Dino
@DinosTinkerShed
@DinosTinkerShed 2 жыл бұрын
One other thing I'm just thinking about. My Safari really required the metal fuel pipe on the carb to be heated up and rotated so the fuel lines were coming in lower than the bottom of the tank. On Karl's 20l he did not need to do this but I am not sure if the 25l Acerbis needs this mod to allow the tank to fully flow or not. it's not a hard mod from what I've seen but I have never done it myself as my carb was already modified when I bought the bike used. Dino, Can you do a follow up video on how Karl’s tank is doing? I’ve read that the Acerbis tank can stretch and start to hit the oil cooler over time. This issue causes the tank to sag and it breaks the outer most spark plug cap. I was wondering if he’s experienced any of these issues since the installation and mods. The Safari tank seems more robust with the brace on the front. I can’t decide which one to go with. I would like to hear your thoughts now that you guys have some miles on this tank. Cheers!

I will talk to him about it. He has the smaller Acerbis tank and I do not believe he has had any issues. I wonder if the sagging issue is with their 25 liter tank?

I went back and watched the install video you did for his bike. I forgot that he had the the smaller tank. I believe that sagging issue is only with the 25 litter tank. I think we're going to go with the Safari tank. I just like the idea of that extra brace. Thanks for the great information you've done on the DR650. You channel is awesome! @@DinosTinkerShed

I really really recommend a good quality external mic, the sound is low and volume is inconsistent. The video quality is great though.

Was able to just flip the turn signal brackets 180 degrees on my 2018. Really angry theAscerbis tank shape doesn't allow my huge parabellum windshield to fit any more. I love that huge windscreen and it cost me $250.

That sucks, what model is the Parabellum? Karl has one on his but maybe it is a different size? Dino

For a top-dollar item, plasticware is good, but spoilt by cheap and nasty fittings supplied. No vacuum cap supplied, washers way too small, and seat-clip requires modifications. Next time I'll be looking for a different brand. Also no need to butcher up blinker brackets - they can be simply juggled around to fit OK, even with the added complication of Barkbusters. Also for seat-clip bolts, recommend applying anti-seize or grease, not loctite.
@DinosTinkerShed
@DinosTinkerShed 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your observations, I agree that there could have been a few additional items included for sure. I did not see a way to adjust the turn signals without modifying them, the locator tabs seemed to be a bit of a challenge. I did not have the issue with the seat tab you talk about, I wonder if they changed the design at some point. Thank you again for your insight. Dino

Could it be that the year of the bike has anything to do with the signal lights bracket conundrum? What year DR is yours, backwodsman? I'm on the fence about this modification mostly because I lack the luxury of a garage with a nice workbench and vise. Mine is a 2020.
@backwoodsman1753
@backwoodsman1753 2 жыл бұрын
@@elego49 I think no change with the years. Mine is 2019 model. No special tools required to re-fit unmodified blinker brackets, just some thoughtful manipulation.

I think its called "bush pig" because it is often used "in the bush" so to speak, and when revving it sort of sounds like a wild hog rooting around in the underbrush. If you look at some of the aussie youtubers who really push the bike you can see how it would get that nickname.
