Great song. Sadly Andy Rourke passed away last week. You've got to do This Charming Man as a tribute to him. Bass for days on that bad boy.

I somehow didn't know Andy died. Your words punched me in the gut. He has ALWAYS been my favorite bass player...since I listened to The Queen Is Dead. I like Simon Gallup from The Cure too. Man this is a real bummer 😥

In my humble opinion, the bass lines of the albums "Meat is murder" and "The queen is dead" are the best pop-rock lines of the last 40 years.

This song is a perfect example that Morrissey spoke in a way that no other lyricist spoke. He addresses uncelebrated feelings. What other lyricist would write "It's so easy to laugh, it's so easy to hate, it takes guts to be gently and kind...". The Smiths speak to me more than any other artist of the 1980's.

When this song was out it was a form of expression to either dedicate it or record on cassette to someone. Purest for of expression to someone in the 80s and 90s. We had it good.

Thanks for your reaction. You'll love Jeane by The Smiths. If I know it's Over tugged at one of your heartstrings then congratulations you're not a psychopath! If you can relate to his pain that's a good thing or if you relate for other reasons then this song is good to listen to, and I'd never exclude it from any playlist. Loving your reactions, usually I get annoyed when people keep pausing although you, at least, seem to know instinctively when to pause. Although, personally, I think it's best to listen to the songs and not let that analytical part of the brain take over if you know what I mean. Having said that you're more preceptive than many others I've seen (those people who recite Wikipedia to "break it down" for us!!) the way the song made you feel is a far better guide than the last update on Wikipedia.

I listened to "I Know It's Over" way back in the day in my backyard. My father walked by and said "What are you listening to?" "It makes me want to kill myself". HA!! PS: For a great bassline try The Jam "Town Called Malice" You'd dig that one.

Love to hear the bass called out on this tune. It's not a particularly busy line, but it's just .... TASTY. A lot of restraint and use of rests. Side One of "The Queen Is Dead" has to qualify as the single most depressing album side in history. You just can't be a good mood after listening to this.... The Smiths were at the heights of their powers with this one.... And, you are astute to notice that this tune, unlike many other Smiths songs, just goes full on for the shoegazer effect, and isn't "ironically cheerful" like, say, Cemetry Gates or Frankly, Mr. Shankly (and many others on other Smiths albums).

"It takes strength to be gentle and kind." Only Morrissey could put that into a verse. Obviously, his strength was failing him, as he recognized this was utter delusion. Maybe it's something his mother told him, and now he wants to die because it wasn't applicable in this case. Not sure. Great song. Andy's bass playing just walks you along, as Morrissey bemoans his life choices. I think it was Morrissey who also said "Love was just a miserable lie "-see Miserable Lie, and later wanted "advice." What a complicated soul!

You’ll never have happy songs without sad ones. And yeah the song is depressing but that’s the point because no one is happy all the time, everyone feels emotions and sometimes those emotions make use feel like we would rather die than face them. It’s a human need to want to be wanted by someone and it’s horrible knowing you don’t have that or atleast you think you don’t.

One of my least favorite songs from the Smiths. It is a little too mawkish and even Morrissey's voice kind of loses it's way toward the end
