What maybe legal on a state level may not be legal for a FAA licenced pilot. The FAA BAC limit is 0.04 as one pilot FAFO. Any type of mind altering drugs is zero. Doesn't matter if you are flying the plane or not, if you are licensed and get on the plane, it's still zero.

I have to admit, as a UK ground crew airport worker the information about the jump seated pilot being on magic mushrooms made a chill run down my spine. At my airport at least, though I believe it’s countrywide… it’s considered crazy and very dangerous to come to work or go Airside whilst impaired in any way. Between the various dangers of the ramp-which includes jet engine ingestion zones and moving aircraft amongst other things, it’s just a very bad place to be if you’re less than 100% alert and switched on. And that’s not even getting into the safety and security of the cockpit. Again because there are between 400-500 buttons, switches and controls again it’s not a place where one should be impaired. The off duty pilot should have thought about this beforehand. Being able to ride in the jumpseat at the back of the cockpit is a bit of a perk for off duty pilots. He’d have to ask the captain for permission and show the proper credentials to prove he’s an airline pilot, listen to the captain’s brief safety briefing and then sit quietly during the sterile phases of flight… But an off duty or deadheading pilot doesn’t have to ride in the jumpseat. He could just as easily have gone and sat in his normal seat with the rest of the pax. That way he could have drank alcohol and all the normal passenger stuff during the flight. I’m not saying that he should have taken the magic mushrooms at all, but I kinda think it might’ve gone better if he’d been in the pax cabin and hallucinated there. It would have probably been laughed off as drunkenness unless he did something really stupid.

It might have been better for him if he claimed he was in a dissociative state but realized he was wrong after a short flight and never intended to do any harm, and that he is a trained pilot so safe operation of an airline isn't attempted murder because airlines are safer than automobiles and kidnapping whilst in average operation of one of those is also not attempted murder. That's harder to claim on the shrooms defense, because dui can be charged as multiple cases of attempted murder.

@@Wrathlon That's not my point. Whether or not the engines can be restarted doesn't effect the aircraft's ability to glide a certain distance, depending on altitude & height. If he just turned _off_ the engines, he'd be stopped and look even more stupid cuz that wouldn't do shit and they could restart them. But even with the engines perminately disabled, most of the time the pilots can get the plane safely on the ground at a nearby airport. My point is, this is not Looney Toons - the plane ain't gonna drop from the sky. That guy who tried to take the plane down is either extremely ignorant or just an idiot, doesn't really make a difference anyway. He didn't even try to incapacitate the pilots.

Someone who wasn’t supposed to be flying the plane tried to take over control of the plane. That’s what a hijacking is. Threat level 4, the max it can get, because he was on the flight deck. It’s really sad; sounds like he had a psychotic break. Reportedly he asked flight attendants to cuff him just in case, which was the right move because he tried something else crazy after. I doubt he’ll do any time, and will get sent to treatment instead, but for sure his career is dead.

From what I heard on the news, he tried to activate the engine fire suppression system, which would have killed them... it may have been sleep deprivation, 40 hours without sleep, maybe he hallucinated a problem that wasn't there and tried to play hero, or was just going crazy in general. At least no one got hurt ..yeah, his career is definitely dead.

I had to look it up. The reporting that I’m seeing is that he discussed shrooms with the arresting officers but didn’t openly admit to being on them at that time. The whole thing is weird. When over land, there is often a diversion airport within gliding range. So shutting off the engines isn't even a good way commit suicide and presumably a pilot would know that. Unless we find out that the pilot knew that area happened to have a dearth of airports, it is just totally bizarre. Not that he shouldn't be charged with attempted murder and kept in a box for the rest of his life. While you can glide into a diversion airport, there is no opportunity to go around if anything goes wrong. So, he tried to put everyone in considerable danger, even if planes don't quite lawn dart as soon as the engines stop spinning like the public thinks. Its just a suicide mechanism that not only has a pretty high chance of survival even if you succeed in taking every action, engine out landings would have literally been part of his training. Very odd.
