Phenomenal workout and effort. Im just not sure where you got the idea that dorian did 20 reps and multiple working sets. It was always 1-2 warmup sets and then one all out set to failure usually 6-12 reps. For example Leg extensions kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kNGKg9de28i4Y2g.html Leg press kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kNGKg9de28i4Y2g.html Lying hamstring curls kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kNGKg9de28i4Y2g.html Stiff leg deadlifts kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kNGKg9de28i4Y2g.html

He also famously stopped back squatting in the mid 80s, and the blood and guts specific workout that I thought this was gonna be replicating, from the actual VHS blood and guts, was with the hack squat subbed in because he said the squat really didn't fit his shape as a quad movement. Killer video but yea there's some confusing things mis-attributed to yates.

No hate, but how is this Dorian's B&G routine? He used the hack squat instead of regular BB squats, used a full range of motion with a very controlled/deliberate eccentric, and (after a couple of warmups) did *one* all-out set to failure.
@evaverma485
@evaverma485 6 ай бұрын
you're right, it's not his B&G routine. it's his 1985 routine. also, what's the point of copying his numbers if Hooper is clearly stronger than Yates (except on calves) - he should use a weight that brings him to absolute failure on the 10-12 rep range
@44davewright

Blood and guts is as much about the timing of the lift as it is about the intensity. The slow negative, training to failure and past but limiting the number of reps and sets to maximize recovery. I never grew as much as i did running it, literally my favorite routine hands down!!

This is not Dorian Yates blood and guts leg workout In his book he explained he stopped squats when competing for the Mr O Because of safety reasons the way he trains It's usually one to two sets 6-8 reps then carries on beyond failure The workout usually Leg Extension- full stack , then forced reps Leg presses back in Dorian Yates time were built differently, The angle of the plate meant that your legs would have to touch your chest you would have far more range of movement Plus they are much heavier machines back then 1-2sets 6 to 8 reps to failure, then any advanced training technique to take it beyond failure Next in the workout was the hack squat principal with sets reps and training technique Lying leg curl, barbell stiff-leg deadlift, standing one leg curl Standing calf raise machine full stack, seated calf raises + Don't bounce standing calf raise machine, drop heels to floor then raise on your toes and hold at the top
@damienthomas3699

I'm sorry but this is nothing like the training Dorian did. He would do 1 warm up set for 10 to 12 reps then 1 working set from 6 to 8 reps to failure for each exercise. Very minimal volume but extreme intensity. Not sure where you've got the idea that Dorian was all about volume 😂 he's famously known for having the opposite philosophy.

If you have not already done so, you should watch some of Dorians interviews / documentaries rgds his training. He did things his way, regardless of what went before, or what others were doing. Probably to most peoples surprise from early/mid career he never did heavy squats. He built those massive legs on leg press and curls, predominantly. I seem to recall he said this was due to back pains/issues.

Why do you think most people dont have the capacity to to "true and absolute" failure? Its much harder to go to or close to failurefor multiple sets.
@bdegrds
@bdegrds 7 ай бұрын
@@roberte289your comment proves my point. People think what they are doing is failure but it is not. If you can do a second set, then whatever you did in that first set was not to absolute failure. True Absolute failure means another set is not physically possible, that's what Dorian did, it took time to learn how to do that, it took Dorian years of honing in and tapping into his ability to go there. Thats why quarter century after retirement Dorian is still thought of as the hardest training bodybuilder. Go watch the video of him training Chris Cormier it's easy to find on KZfaq. Multiple sets is far easier anyone can do that, his 1 set to achieve the results that Multiple tries (sets) takes others, is rare and exceptionally difficult.

I think Dorian was up to 700lbs on his squat in his earlier days when he trained higher volume but started experiencing a lot of hip pain so dropped the squats. He did Smith machine squats and leg presses instead. His blood and guts workout comsisted of leg extensions, leg presses and hack squats, leg curls, single leg curls and Romanian DL...all one working set he woukd pyramid up to in the 8-12 rep range. I think he rested 2-3 minutes between sets. He would finish with 2 working sets of calf raises (standing and seated)

Hack squats beyond failure 4. lying leg curls beyond failure 5. straight legged dead lifts 6. calves standing beyond failure (every set like the first)

The effort is appreciated but Dorian was a proponent of the rest pause system so yes it would be 3 sets but incorporated into one long set to maximise time under tension as in perform as many reps for a weight heavy enough to get 10 reps- rest 15 seconds- perform as many more as possible-rest 20 seconds then perform To failure, Jordan peters would be the guy most people knows these days or really refining the method along with dante truddel

This is not Dorian Yates Leg Routine. He would pre-exhaust his quads first with leg extensions then go to squats and then later in his career leg press, followed by leg curls and finished with hack squats. all done with about 2 forced reps and leg extensions and leg curls had 2 negative reps after the forced reps. He did all the exercises very controlled deliberate motion, slower on the negative then the positive. If Dorian put you through his session you would be puking by the end of it.

I wonder what percentages of your max you've used during squats and leg presses? Seeing absolute weights is impressive, but percentages may help us mortals plan our own workouts better.

No hate here love the content as always. Just noticed that calf raises say 250kg but the machine is set to 100kg. Loving the effort going in during off season.

Farting, laughing and having good ol time squatting through 495 lbs like it’s nothing; then casually loads 2,000 lbs leg press for reps. 😮 Epic inspiration - thank you. Great vid and getting the brand gear. 🤙

Most impressive aspect of the video was farting and continuing with the set, multiple times! One rip and I’m done from laughing at myself 😂

I actually agree with the other comment that you should work in these higher volume body building workouts into your training. My thoughts are that you end up training lighter, but with much higher volume, do it with intensity and it seems like a recipe for injury prevention/ bulletproofing joints, strengthening ligaments and tendons and not pounding the muscle with maxes. Maybe like every 4th or 5th workout or some consistent frequency Thoughts Mitchell?
