I love how open minded you are. Listening to songs you've never heard, from before your time. God Bless! (when I was a kid my Dad introduced me to classical music, Sinatra, The Tijuana Brass, brought me to Drum Corps competitions..). Great thing that you are open to 'new' music! You can't go wrong with Bowie. Brilliant artist, Brilliant writer...Brilliant man!

He has an absolutely amazing voice! I have been a fan for many years and I even saw him a few times on stage before he died. Every one of his songs is different. They used this song for the moon landing in 1969. His lyrics are always very deep. Please react to more David Bowie songs, you will be amazed. Like for example: Life on Mars, Wild Is the Wind or Young Americans. By the way, he was also an actor in many movies, a painter, a sculpturist and he could play 14 instruments.

he composed and wrote all his songs, and since the album hunky dory he was always involved in the production, some records produced and arranged by himself, apart from that he also wrote for other artists, as well as producing for others, as in the case of lou reed or iggy pop, he also discovered one of the most important bands of the new wave, as is devo, he helped them get a record contract

The space program was in the paper/ tv every day. There was space toys spaceman movies,cereal it was absolutely marketed constantly ( the papers want to know who’s shirt you wear ) . He brought us out there in a tin , but what if something went wrong? Sonically it’s a masterpiece that blew everyone’s mind as we had never heard anything like it ☮️

Awe man, you picked a nice one. Bowie is such an amazing talent. Singer/songwriter, actor, painter…. He did it all. Hey check out his song I’m Afraid of Americans. It’s much later in his career. Bowie is ……. I’ve been trying to figure out what to say. How to explain him. He, himself, is a work of art.

I noticed that none of the other commenters responded to your inquiry of the meaning. To be honest... I can't help but feel like I'm missing something too. To me, the symbolism of the first half maps perfectly to man's necessary journey of transformation when becoming his own person. But that is contradictory with the symbolism of the second half, which represent a permanent, insignificant departure from society. So while the entire song reeks of symbolism and meaning, I'm yet to find a coherent interpretation.
