I really didn't like a lot of the episodes, but if I'm being honest that's how I feel about the clone wars. That said, just like TCW, the highs are high and the lows are incredibly low. "The Village Bride" and "The elder" felt quintessentially star wars in ways we never got to see on screen. Real Padawan-Master relations are hard to come by even during the clone wars. Sure we get the moral teachings in TCW, but we don't often get the spiritual/mystical topics that I'd expect from a group of samurai space wizards. In the village bride we get a good commentary on the living force and a Jedi's responsibility even after Order 66. Hell, it even includes a reference to the exploratory corps. "Lop and Ocho" and "the ninth Jedi" were memorable and told good stories. The duel was fun in the way those SWTOR cinematics are fun. The rest were forgettable in many ways. I'd say the biggest issue is that these were billed as anime + star wars and the studios really took that to heart by making episodes that leaned into anime. The twins, the cyborg one, and the band one are like entire anime genres distilled into 24minutes each. The problem is that star wars is already anime. Laser swords, magic, science fiction, space fights, teenagers with powers, that shit is all very anime. We didn't need a rockband nor an astro-boy homage. I'm kind of surprised (and feeling lucky) we didn't get an awkward harem and drawn-out romance since those are mainstays of the anime. That said it's a cheap and low-stakes anthology. It won't stop other good things from being made and will hopefully inspire newer ideas to enter the universe. It will get more seasons and people will be able to look at the good stuff and ignore the bad.

I've only watched 2 episodes so far (The Duel and The Twins) and whilst I thought they were cool, that's all I could really say about it. I think that's really all they were going for at this point in time. I personally feel like Visions is their way of testing the waters for a new style. Pair this with the new High Republic Manga, I think it's just an experiment to see if there could be a future in this medium with star wars. I will finish it at some point I'm sure, but it is the first piece of Star Wars media in the Disney+ era that I haven't consumed as soon as it came out

I enjoyed visions for what it was as an anthology show.

They were a bunch of shorts, if anything. The fact that they had any stories to tell at all is miraculous. Plus all of these shorts were tributes. To either movies and tv shows that inspired the original films. Or tributes to classic/some of the best anime out there.

How can you say that "most people that aren't weebs would say all anime is bad". That's like saying "all non westerners would say all animated cartoons are bad" that's such a huge genre of thing to lump into "bad"

To say something like “most non-anime fans believe/would agree that anime is bad” is pretty unfair. That would be like watching Morbius and then saying “wow, this film was bad so therefore all films are bad”. Anime is a medium, not a genre. If you don’t like one series, that is an issue with that series. It can’t be extrapolated to include the entire medium.

I never really liked anime either but I feel like even tho the stories in visions didn’t stick with me, It looked cool and was a breath of fresh air and I’m a bitch for shit like that in popular franchises. I hope Disney does more with this concept.

I kinda liked some of the show but I can still see a lot of the problems. The style over substance comment basically summarized the whole series so i think if your the type of person who likes cool stuff then you’ll like the show. I was able to look pasted the plot for these episodes because I wanted to see how wild these would get but plot is important when getting engaged with these kinds of things. Maybe if some of these episodes had more time then they could’ve possibly been something special.

Could you elaborate on the episodes that had ‘bad’ animation. Also, I haven’t seen anyone compare Visions with What If. Maybe it’s just me but I haven’t seen any comparisons on Reddit, Twitter or KZfaq. Those shows aren’t remotely similar.

Ik this has already been said, but I feel like they went with a style over spectacle approach with this due to its highly experimental nature, like they gotta test the waters before reslly going all out with it, tbh the best thing about this show IMO is that it at least gives me hope that Disney is willing to take risks and maybe just maybe we can get more unique and creative stories

Star Wars Visions is proof to me that Disney Star Wars is a special effects tech demo. Honestly I think they should just start releasing new Star Wars projects as screensavers because they have about the same level of storytelling.

This series isn’t a good introduction into anime. Its literally only a compilation of the worst anime tropes. Many actual animes break from the formula of their predecessors.

I mean I'm not a full on weeb (anymore) but I can definitely say that anime isn't really bad. A lot of them aren't. It certainly has a certain way of story telling that can be different. But it isn't bad.

I agree 100% I am new to anime, and I genuinely didn't care for this too much bc it is all spectacle and dumb fights. Also, it just isn't anime. Simplicity can work even in anime, but anime has cool stories long or short, and you are able to follow the story well. It is way more than cool animation, while this show just had nonsense happen with cool visuals. These show writers don't know what makes anime gripping.

I think that, for one to like (or even love) Visions, you either have to 1) really enjoy anime's NUMEROUS stylistic and narrative tropes or 2) be pretty new to the medium and find it a refreshing alternative to "western" animation. I thought Visions was kinda up there with Batman Ninja, in that it was pretty ridiculous and outright terrible in parts. One of those it sounds great on paper ideas that turns out to be a raspberry in execution. If you'd like to watch an anime anthology movie that's actually good (often great) and not centered around Star Wars, then my go-to title is Robot Carnival followed closely by Memories. Robot Carnival's theme is, unsurprisingly, the celebration of robots as both heroes and villains, with each segment directed and produced by a different studio (just like Visions). The score is also unforgettable. Memories is a sight to behold and difficult to describe in abstract terms, but is, in its own creepy and quirky way, almost as enjoyable as Robot Carnival. Another anthology film that doesn't get talked about much anymore, but should, is Meikyû monogatari, more commonly known as Neo Tokyo. Some beautiful stuff produced by the legendary studio Madhouse, along with others. It's been a loooong time since I've sat down with it and intend to do so in the coming days. Regarding Visions, several of the segments were striking from a visual angle, but almost all of them were weak narratively. And if you're turned off by anime, Visions is NOT the show that will change your mind. Indeed, if anything, it will most likely reinforce your distaste for the medium.

I heavily disagree. Considering you like Rebels, I really don't see your points, you sound like you just hate anime more than anything else. Rebels had even more pointless episodes without story, that not only were kiddy garbage, but also had terrible characters and bad visuals. This show had unique visuals, interesting premises like the ninth jedi, the village bride and akakiri that were all unique and different from everything I've seen in star wars (I don't read comics, only watch movies and shows), and tons of style/personality. Personally I'd rate it 8/10 (ignoring ep2 that I'd also rather completely forget).

I haven't watched this show yet and i am happy that there is an star wars anime since the hole idea was from samurai movies but as someone who isn't much into anime im happy it isn't canon im sure i wouldn't want some of these to be canon but then again if a star wars show isn't good or as good as the other shows they usually get better at season 3 😂

I quite liked it, I think half of the episodes were really good, the others were not. I didn't expect much more from people who were not the biggest star wars fans, just thought "hey, this looks cool" and made a few shorts.

As great as the mandalorian and clone wars finale was I can’t help but feel star wars is a bit lifeless at the moment. Would kind of like it to sleep for 5-10 years but I know Disney would never do that.

After the 2nd Episode, I could see where it was going and the most hyped episode, 3 The Twins already made me wanna quit. I just dont know what it is about it just doesnt fit well with Star Wars except Episode 1 it was quite good.

That is an instant fail as a reviewer and someone who claims to be critical it never sees the big picture of what's wrong in how marvel's what if is a big problem with Disney and the mcu. Star wars visions while it is not star wars and your arguments about what you think is star wars is also stupid, you just need to look at the original trilogy and and more certain things about the prequel trilogy to note what lucas was making star wars to be which disney has failed repeatedly to do.

I think what killed it was the lack of substance, i understand all episodes are not connected but still, one episode is serious, cool and stylish and the next is just a kids show, it doesn't make it very good bc not many children will watch that so the people who watch it will get bored and just drop the show. in my opinion if it had more tonal substance it would have been a bit better

I have plenty of friends who I would not call weebs but still have a favorite manga or anime. In fact, most of my friends fall into this category. Yes, this is an anecdote, but you didn't exactly share peer reviewed studies on this so we're not exactly dealing with that level of debate here (nor should we, as this would a silly topic to get that deep into the weeds over). But my main point is that you made a statement on the common human experience that does not at ALL reflect my own experience.

I'm a pretty big anime fan and I... Did not enjoy this show like at all. I think the 9th Jedi is the only good episode in the show and it's still just good. I enjoyed it but I don't think I'll be rewatching it anytime soon. This show isn't the worst thing I've ever seen but I really don't care for it.

I don't like anime retellings if Western properties. I didn't care for it when they did it with Halo and I don't like it with Starwars. And that's coming from someone who grew up with anime. Anime and the Japanese are something onto it's self, and can represent the Americana of Starwars right. It alters the aesthetic and tone too much.
