Sleep paralysis is one hell of a scary thing to experience, definitely wouldn't want to wish it on my worst enemy. The only instances of sleep paralysis I've experienced have just been auditory hallucinations, I can only imagine how scary a visual hallucination would be.
@jackiedurand4654
@jackiedurand4654 4 ай бұрын
I had it happen to me a few times and thank goodness I knew what it was. It was visual and auditory but nothing scary per say, just my family outside my room in the middle of the night, talking to my kid and it was like I could see through my closed door and "see" what was happening

What if it's not an hallucination?
@pietrayday9915
@pietrayday9915 4 ай бұрын
I had it every few days, sometimes nightly, for a couple years. Those visual hallucinations are almost indistinguishable from reality, and can look more real than reality, if that makes any sense! What you see is utterly convincing, if you don't know what's happening and don't know what to look for. Mine stopped the morning I realized the difference between the room I was seeing when having a visual hallucination looked completely different from what I saw once I actually woke up - it's something like that thing that happens when you go to sleep in a strange room, say a hotel room or a guest room at a relative's place, and then wake up confused about where you are... the most noticeable difference was in the lighting: while having the hallucination, the room was almost pitch-dark, but when I woke up completely, it was bright and sunny daylight. Curiously, auditory and visual hallucinations are not all that you can experience: one of the signature hallucinatory sensations of Sleep Paralysis is a pressure on your chest, arms, neck, and face, as if something is sitting on you, and there's also the sensation of something touching your arms or legs, shaking your bed, crawling over your body from the foot of the bed, pulling on your blankets, bugs crawling on you, and so on. I've experienced hallucinatory smells and tastes as well, and then there are less-commonly recognized "sixth senses" that can be affected by hallucinations, such as a sense of kinaesthesia, or how different parts of your body are positioned in relationship to the floor and each other - the effect can feel like you're levitating or flying, or your arms and legs are being moved around (sometimes in anatomically impossible ways), or your being pulled out of bed, or a sensation that I kind of think of as "gravity", in which I'd feel the weight of something that wasn't touching me but was somehow invisible in the room with me, something like that feeling of being watched, or that sense you get of someone standing behind you... the effect usually comes across like the feeling that someone is in your room with you while you're sleeping, standing just out of sight, leaning over your bed, or I could also feel a sensation as if some sort of dense gravity were pulling my mind through my body and bed into the earth, or again, a sensation of levitating. The variety of forms the visual hallucinations could take, and the variety of other kinds of hallucinations, along with the sheer number of times it happened to me, made it pretty easy for me to see how sleep paralysis could lead to being associated with all sorts of different "paranormal" experiences, from the classic "old hag" (I did see a terrifying old woman a few times), to hauntings, to vampire lore, to alien abductions, to "pixilation" by fairies, to demonic possession, and I don't doubt one bit that those experiences are absolutely terrifying, and seem absolutely real to those unfortunate enough to experience it! To me, it's not a matter of "oh, that's JUST sleep paralysis!", sleep paralysis is every bit as weird and terrifying and "real" as any technically "paranormal" experience, much stranger and more disturbing, actually, simply because your own mind somehow invents things that you'd never inflict upon yourself consciously. And, as I said above, it feels "more real than reality" when it happens... there's no part of the experience, the weirdness, or the terror that is "invalid" or "mundane" to me. Seriously - our unconscious minds could conjure all sorts of pleasant or mundane things to experience in this state of consciousness, so why should the things we experience instead be so nearly universally bizarre, unearthly, and frightening? Any biological or psychological cause for sleep paralysis seems to me just as mysterious, frightening, strange, and worthy of sharing as encounters with actual ghosts and demons and vampires would be! Anyway, I've had the visual hallucinations lots of times, and they are as unsettling as you can imagine. But, maybe strangely, I kind of miss them now that they've stopped - I love horror stories and movies, and now that I understand a little better what Sleep Paralysis is and how it works, it's like having a world of terrifying little horror movies running in my own mind that are more imaginative and frightening and weird than you usually find in actual horror movies and stories. I'm not usually creative in waking life, so these moments of vivid - if terrifying - imagination from my subconscious are something that fascinates me!

Visual hallucinations during sleep paralysis are the worst, and for me they were always immediately following terrible nightmares. One time that I found especially weird, despite not being quite the scenario but happened in a string of terrible nights. I got so scared during a nightmare that I forced myself to wake up and there was the really weird moment where the sky split open as i opened my eyes. Its an experience that I haven't forgotten cause of the weird bodily feeling that came with it

To be honest, Candleface actually seems pretty worthy of trust. I mean, you suffer by force and get visited by unholy looking creatures in your sleep, and when you manage to be between sleep and reality, he comes to reality too and does you a favor, as you brought him to reality, he got rid of your problems and maybe freed you. Candleface won't betray those who help him. He is pretty worthy of trust. And, also, despite how he looked and his actions, he spared the one he visited most.

Oh Kay? I want to try to make sense of the story. I thought it was ridiculous of Brown to make it seem like the main character’s fault that the experiment was failing. I failed to see how when Brown was the one upping the dose and insisting on continuing the experiment, even when it didn’t seem to be working. Now it seems like something from Native American beliefs about how if you talk about something like a wendigo, it’ll come kill you, except in his case it killed everyone else. It’s still confusing to me and I would like more information on candle face.

@@sydneyrose6455 I think Candle Face just took a liking to the main character. Maybe because he could actually see 'him' in dreams? It might have attached itself to him from when he was a child (the shadowed figure), but couldn't fully 'come into the light' for MC until the red pills starting messing with his mind, opening the connection wider.. So maybe this gave Candle Face a purpose, protect the MC from everyone else who was harming him. Be it physical, mental, or emotional harm. And that turned out to be everyone else due to the fact that MC was 'ruining' the experiment. It wasn't giving him less sleep (as promised), it wasn't stopping/ending his sleep paralysis (as promised/attempted). The Doctor's abuse is classic Narcissism. It became obvious that upping the dose allowed Candle Face the freedom to move to others dreams (I'd imagine) and kill them for harming MC. When Doc pumped that syringe (with the highest concentration possible I imagine) it shattered the limits and allowed Candle Face to roam free, so long as MC was trapped by the paralysis. Because of being fed during the slaughter of the prison, Candle Face had some honor (or contract/agreement) and cleared the way for MC to escape. The candle is significant because it the physical bond/proof of their agreement. I'd imagine it's actually gone out once the MC was safely away and to call Candle Face it needs to be relit. My thoughts on this awesome creepy pasta. And sometimes... the true monsters don't lurk in the shadows or dreams, but stare us in the face with a smile everyday. Humanity can be the worst monster of all... after all.

You KNOW how to narrate! This may be a stupid question but I’m wondering if you happen to be able to write stories as well as you read them? If you have any of your own stories, I’d like to hear them…

Outstanding!! Crazy good story today! I feel sorry for anyone who suffers from sleep paralysis, my husband does, and it is heart breaking to know he suffers and can do nothing to stop it. It makes this story even more horrifying!

Thank you Stephen for another awesome pasta. Top notch work as always, and I definitely loved this one. Sleep paralysis is something I've experienced all my life, so this one kinda hits home for me. I don't actually hallucinate, but the sensation of not being able to breathe and being unable to move really sucks. It was actually pretty scary as a young child, but I got used to it as I got older. It's still a regular at least a couple times weekly occurrence for me as an adult. I'm simply used to it happening. Anyway thank you for the awesome story, this definitely made my day. 🖤🖤🖤🖤

9:29 Fun fact - for those disappointed with the character designs for the Harry potter films, THIS is what was originally planned for Voldemort. The eyes were a little different, but everything else is much too accurate.

Sleep paralysis sucks. I've had it about 30 times in my life. Pretty sure it's a byproduct of insomnia. Many different things. Sometimes it lasts seconds. Sometimes it lasts hours. Regardless....it's terrifying. Everytime. Even when you know exactly what is going on. Even though you know you're hallucinating. When I break out of it....I can hardly walk...my legs shake so bad.

I'm glad the abusive doctor and guards were stopped. There's something extra sick about using your authority to harm the people in your care. Hard to feel bad about their deaths. It was cathartic to hear about the protagonist overcoming his sleep paralysis and finding a better life. It sounds like Candleface needed the Protagonist to free him, so he returned the favour by freeing the Protagonist in return. Hopefully he doesn't have to use the candle, but that would be an interesting story. A guy who just wants to live an honest life, but corrupt people are always trying to hunt him down, so he has no choice but to call upon a monster to protect him. For whatever reason, Candleface needed the Protagonist, and started protecting him right away. The first people to go were the people who bullied him. And in the end, everyone who posed a threat to his safety and freedom was destroyed. That means Candleface holds him in very high regard. I think the pill freed Candleface from the astral plane where dreams take place and that's why he no longer has sleep paralysis. Candleface was stuck in his subconscious, which caused the paralysis, but the more he took the pill, the more candleface was able to manifest. In the short term, this made his sleep paralysis worse, but in the long run it freed them both. Candleface was freed from the Nightmare world and the Protagonist was freed from his paralysis and from the prison that punished him more than he deserved. After everything he went through, he definitely paid his debt to society, and then some. He basically got sent to hell for a crime he was made to take the fall for.

I very much believe this creature is his protector, but also that Candle's existance was created by him/the experiment. With out him, Candle wouldn't exist as it does, so it removed every obstical and bully. Even doctor Brown who shamelessly begged Candle not to save his life, but to additionally take another's life as well! This of course is just my mini theory, but I think it fits well enough 👌

This would make for a fantastic mini series! Instead of being from Ted's perspective it'd have to be from probably Doc Brown's, and in the finial episode up to the climax of the Waxing would be from Ted's and we would get to see Candle Face for the first time as we replay the events before each Psych Eval.

This happens to me quite often. I can never open my eyes or move, but I can hear everything around me. The worst times are when I’m face down in a pillow or can’t breathe through my nose but I can’t open my mouth either. Sometimes I wonder if I’m supposed to die in my sleep, but I wake back up.

Omg! When he said that he started working "At a gas station in the middle of nowhere" it all clicked! This is the cashier from that creepypasta series, its been a few years since I binged the entirety of it but I remember his special condition where he couldn't sleep. Only thing though is his name is jack in the main series and I'm pretty sure jack states that he's from the town that has the gas station but hey its still pretty cool.
