If you have a killer guitar tone, people will remember you. Why do you remember Eric Clapton and David Gilmore? These guys were not shredders like Van Halen, yet they wrote some of the best guitar solos ever. This was one of the best guitar lessons I ever had and it will help you get an amazing tone.

Clapton was called, "Slowhand" because the audiences back in the day would clap slowly together while he changed a broken string onstage. It was done to hurry up the process.

I was Jeff Cook's (Alabama) guitar tech for 8 years. He wasn't the best guitar player but he knew how to make a song great. He also played the fiddle but could only play it in the A key. Tennessee River, Mountain Music and If You're Gonna Play In Texas didn't turn out too bad since they were all number one hits. I say let's put together a Skynyrd tribute band.

I think the reason so many of us own so many guitars, is the never ending search for that tone. It must be a thrill to have someone great ask you how you got that tone, so far that hasn't happened to me. Great video.

Thanks Dean! I was the same way, drooling over the tones of guys like Allen Collins, Ed King, and Gary Rossington. I tried my best to model my sound around them.

Guitar center did some blues contests some years ago and one year another player and myself tied to move ahead to the next playoff. We had to do a sudden death, 2 minute, off-the -cuff, playoff. He got up and did a Van HaIen instrumentaI; tapping, dive-bombing, the whoIe works, and did it weII. Trying to stay true to my seIf-imposed ruIe of (play what you know); I played blues straight as if I was playing with my band. I moved ahead. It has served me weII (play what you know).

Great point. It's tempting to try to venture out when under pressure. Funny that guy went away from playing the blues for a "blues competition". Good for you to stick with the tricks you know!

Great video. Good advice. I've found that consistency with my jam/practice periodically takes me to new plateaus, usually every five years or so. The feeling of discovering a new level of connection between my soul and the fretboard is amazing. Fair winds and following seas to all.

I always click on a channel that has a guy sit'n with his Epiphone LP and a Katana, just on GP. It's always a good indication that the person is value conscious, yet takes playing seriously. I'd recommend these 2 peices of gear for just about anyone. It's the K.I.S.S. principle.

Excellent advice. Also I think phrasing slower and then finishing with a faster lick gives the perception of playing fast. It’s more effective than just shredding the entire time.

I recently moved to a region in the USA where it is all about cover bands. Not to brag but I probably have the best guitar rigs in our county given that I own 25 top notch guitars and 13 of the best classic vacuum tube amps one can own. That said, I've never played in a cover band because I have my own style that I'm comfortable playing in. I play me just fine. What I can't do is go out in public and try to cover 40 of my favorite guitarists in one evening. I have way too much respect for EVH, Tony Iommi, Brian May, Neal Schon, etc, to think that I can walk on some stage and give those guys justice.

That’s the usual story. Another comes from Clapton himself: “My nickname of ‘Slowhand’ came from [music manager] Giorgio Gomelsky,” Clapton said. “He coined it as a good pun. He kept saying I was a fast player, [so he said] ‘Slowhand’ as a play on words.”

Now wait, the is Tom the PGA professional and KZfaq sensation, also with great guitar chops! Well done, bro. Gilmore and Clapton weren't shredders because, well that's just boring, but also because both played Strats, known for great tone and bends, but not the super low action of an Ibanez or even an LP.

why do you own a boss amp? you understand the art of playing, your blues and eric need a tube glowing in its magic, fast notes dont do any thing but make other guitarists like it, no one else though, if you dont have a tune in your head when you leave a show, no one will ever make you live on forever, ask your girlfriend if she loved speed licks that dont even stay in touch with how good you play, but if you dont hear the real thing ,not digital, you are going to miss alot of good playing, been at it over 50 years and ten years in working groups, i love fast if it works, do a little van halen, but try Jimi the real understanding of the art, great video i enjoyed your talent and honest approach
