The MCU is a masterpiece of brand recognition, but when it comes to costume design, ambitious creative choices are hard to come by. Why is the MCU so bland when the source material is so vibrant?

The fact that Wanda's Wandavision suit, which was made by literal chaos magic, still looks like it was taylored by the same person who did Steve, Nat and Clint's suit is crazy to me.

I'm pretty sure the costume was made USING her chaos magic, but was designed based on Wanda's subconscious, like Westview, it was influenced by what she has seen and what she knows, so it looking similar to the other avengers makes sense. Also, in MoM her suit is darker, and more ripped, torn and cracked, since the darkhold is corrupting her mind, messing with her subconscious. Her chaos magic can't be "corrupted" as it was made by an actual demon, but it *can* be used in "bad" ways.

As a fan of comics!Scarlet Witch, I've found her costumes in the MCU especially egregious. She's one of the few characters who could probably wear a couture ballgown into combat and it would kind of make sense. Also hate that she's limited to the black and "red". Pink feels important as an aspect of Wanda's character. The red symbolizes her passion/anger/strength, but the pink complements it by symbolizing her vulnerability/softness. Also, can't get enough of Black Panther's costume design. Even the casual outfits are so striking and character building. Casual Nakia and Casual Shuri look nothing alike (Shuri in particular has such great style).

Black Panther is especially satisfying because you get a strong sense of the characters' personalities and tastes along with the Wakandan cultural worldbuilding; something that's largely absent from the American characters, especially men. As for the Scarlet Witch thing, I completely agree. A really wacky costume wouldn't necessarily fit with the earlier Avengers films, but it would be SUCH an obvious choice for WandaVision, a show that started out with a very bold aesthetic.

I never noticed how boring Gamora and Nebula's clothes are. I guess because of their brightly coloured skin the designer shrugged and went for more black leather?

I think their skin tone goes a long way into making their overall Look appear fun and interesting, which sort of balances out the more generic gritty sci-fi elements of their costumes. But I would've loved to see the GOTG films lean more into their wild faux-retro aesthetic, like David Lynch's Dune, or Flash Gordon or something.

I can understand that, for live action, there are practical problems with making a bright, colorful costume like the comics originally had. Nonetheless, the more practical, leather-bound suits with boots and buckles and muted colors really seems to be the antithesis of comic book superheroes.

Yay, a new video! Tbh, it's kind of hard to watch some of the MCU movies, especially the fighting scenes, bc everything is so grey. So one can only hope they'll make the characters more visually distinct eventually. Also, I like how you always include captions in your videos, that makes it so much easier for me to follow along! ^^
@wingnutlady
@wingnutlady 3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely agree. I remember thinking back in 2012 that the action in The Avengers felt easy to follow partially because everything felt so colorful in comparison to more grounded films like The Dark Knight. But by Age of Ultron, I realized how wrong I was. The muted tones mean everything bleeds together once the special effects kick in.

Surprised you didn’t talk more about the textures. What distinguishes Marvel from the comics and from DC is the fabrics and weaves that can’t show up on the page. Compare 2011’s Green Lantern to Captain Marvel, for example. PS - Glad you made a new video!

This is one of the few areas where I actually disagree with you. Not about the flat lighting and horrible GCI overcrowding, but I really LIKE the movie costumes 90% of the time. It'd be horribly distracting to have the characters running around in bright red spandex, and Avengers 1 Cap is the worst Cap costume (the best is the utilitarian one from the second half of The First Avenger and last scene of Winter Soldier = something a real person miiiight wear but still recognizable). Generally the costumes work with the tones of the movies and I like the relative realism. But then again, I also really like Nolan era Batman. Re the next few phases, I'm not optimistic, I don't feel like Marvel, or Hollywood in general, has been good at handling the fantastic.

This is awesome. I love that they made these design decisions to tie the universe and franchise together. They should have taken more liberty on the solo films however

I think compromising on the costumes is one of the great ways Marvel has gotten to mass audiences, similar to how they don’t use the supernames (for the most part). It’s easy to latch on to costumes as an excuse to write off the film. Scarlet Witch is going into battle in a one-piece? Stupid! Scarlet Witch going into a battle in a leather jacket? Still stupid, but at least it looks like she’s trying to protect herself.

I think there are ways to balance weirder/more cartoonish elements with "mainstream accessibility," as proven by the popularity of films like Deadpool, Kick-Ass, Birds of Prey, etc. It requires more variety of tone from film to film, which is something the MCU generally lacks. But I definitely agree that a really out-there comics costume for Scarlet Witch *would* be inappropriate for a film like Age of Ultron! (Meanwhile it could've been an ideal fit for WandaVision.)

@@359339 That's the interesting part, imo : she has to be feminine (and is that heteronormative?), she has to be powerful (but in a real world sense as a CEO, not in a superhero way), she has to evolve (fitting both her own arc and supporting Tony's arc, without distracting from his arc)...

I really like Pepper Potts' costumes! She has a rly distinctive style that fits in with her super-rich CEO brand, while also feeling like it fits in with Gwyneth Paltrow's own image. But I didn't discuss her here because I was focusing on the superhero costumes rather than costuming in general.

A superhero’s costume is one of the most important elements to the character and comic book movies just can’t adapt them which makes me think these characters belong on page. Although spiderman’s sewing machine suit at the end of no way home does give me hope.

Captain America's 'stage' costume from the first film was 10 times better than the costume he actually wore into combat. At least that costume looked like the comic book version and was bright and the cuts of the boots and gloves were comic accurate. Why couldn't the combat costume have looked that good?

I totally agree about the weird duality of marvel being considered the "brighter, cheerier superhero property" despite having the blandest set and costume design. It's just so grey and unpleasant to look at. At the very least DCEU justifies all the grey with their darker tone but with marvel it's just grey and bleak for no reason??? tragic tbh.

I don't consider it a problem. I think they are doing just fine... super hero's are stupid and there comic based uniforms are ridiculous... Comic colors come from the way comics are printed and trying to keep costs down. the costume designs often are not something that works in 3d. I.e., there's a front side a 3/4 side but the back is not something that could exist in reality. The x-men is blazing yellow and black.. people would laugh and point. strange mask, lighting bolts... ete... it's a joke... So marvel keep doing what your doing.. your doing it right.
