I think I remember a video in Periodic Table Channel on youtube by professor from Uni of Nottingham said that even the best chemist in the world, still cannot synthesize the morphine cheap enough for manufacturing. We still need to harvest the opium elixir from poppy pod to obtain morphine. In a sense, we owe our life to a simple plants that cannot even think.

Both. If I want to reduce swelling or reduce pain from physical trauma, I use Ibuprofen. If I want to relieve a migraine, be more wakeful, or help with a hangover (assuming I lack either Midol or Gatorade), I take Excedrin Migraine. If I am sick, I abuse Ibuprofen while consuming a lot of water, and either sinus/sleeping meds or Excedrin, based on what I am doing at the time. I use Ibuprofen additionally for things like toothache and new piercings.

Ibuprofen is easier on the Liver! In fact, the leading cause of Liver failure in America, is Acetaminophen poisoning. (Overdose of Tylenol). You would think it would be Alcoholism, but it is not. Alcoholism is sometimes a contributing factor. Tylenol for a hangover headache. It is actually the Tylenol that causes the most damage. Take Ibuprofen!

Pain medication has only worked for me sometimes. In fact, most of the time, it doesn't work be it acetaminophen, naproxen, or ibuprofen. Oxycodone works for pain but it is an opiate and opiates can be addictive. For menstrual cramps, Midol is the only pain medicine that is not an opiate and that works. I am not sure why but I seem to have developed a tolerance to acetaminophen and NSAIDS unless it is midol. I don't know what is in midol other than acetaminophen that makes it work so well but I don't want to take opiates simply because NSAIDS don't work. I guess I will have to endure every pain and just not take pain meds. But here's the thing. My pain medication levels are usually 1 dose per month and at most 1 week's worth of pain medication per month(but it only reaches these levels when I am close to having a seizure despite taking anti-seizure meds or after surgery(of which I have had only 1, an appendectomy)). So why would I, at these low pain medication levels, become tolerant to acetaminophen and NSAIDS to the point where they don't work? Are my white blood cells producing different COX enzymes that NSAIDS just can't bind to because of having previously taken NSAIDS? Are the receptors in my brain that acetaminophen binds to being downregulated even though it is usually only once a month that I take it?

The difference between ibuprofen and acetaminophen is that ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory and acetaminophen a fever reducer. Acetaminophen reduces pain by cooling down the body which raises the pain threshold. So I would say that ibuprofen is better for pain specifically compared to acetaminophen, but it does reduce pain. But acetaminophen is definitely better for fevers and headaches.

As a pharmacist for pain, I prefer aspirin so long I know my kidney function is fine. At adequate doses, close to 3gm split every 4 to 6 hrs is equipotent to codeine as I recall from my pharmacology classes at UF. We are backing off from Ibuprofen because it may have undesirable cardiovascular effects and few benefits are gained at doses higher than 600mg every 8 hrs (or TID) in the lingo of the US. Acetaminophen I had learned to be a selective cox3 produced solely in the brain. It is a good pain reliever when used at the correct dose, but the FDA is recommending to back of bcz of the opiod epidemic. Still, at 1000mg every 6 hrs it relieves pain very well without affecting renal flow nor risking people that are likely to bleed... Those with ulcers, warfarin or newer direct anticoagulants like rivaroxaban.

around 2:48 u mentioned researchers say they can actually activate pain instead of reduce it, for me and tooth pain, it absolutely for sure hurts worse when i smoke bud, its definitely noticeable and the m.o.a. or way i smoke doesnt make any bit of difference at all, it has nothing to do with smoke touching the teeth or a vacuum being pulled.

I generally find that Ibuprofen is the one I end up taking the most, although I personally would almost always take them in combination, because that's fine. But the one hang up I have about acetaminophen (paracetamol where I'm from) is the fact that it is metabolised through one of the enzymes which metabolises alcohol, making it more likely to have an overdose effect of the paracetamol when you're drinking or hungover, making you feel much worse than just that hangover (because Woohoo Pharmacology!). Just make sure you know the circumstances for each drug and you'll be fine :)

Because of decades of having to deal with inflammatory injuries due to athletics, I became a fan of ibuprofen and the other NSAIDs depending on a specific need where one was a better choice than another. Acetaminophen never seemed to help, even as an analgesic, nearly as well. Add in acetaminophen's relatively higher risk of overdose and I tend to stay away from it unless it's an included ingredient in another medication.

Acetaminophen doesn't do anything for me by itself, but I'm at a loss because I can't take Ibuprofen or any other NSAID for that matter, so I usually just have to deal with the pain unless I take Acetaminophen w/ Codeine.

Which on do you take for period cramping? Ibuprofen? I am quite sure it is not asprin.

Ibuprofen does not work as well for me as Acetaminophen. Plus I can only take medications that contain Acetaminophen. I will not take any generics right now as I am on blood thinners I even have certain pain medications hidden from myself that have NSAIDS in them because of it such as asprin and and aleve

I have been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and arthritis and the pain medications the doctors prescribe seem to always have Acetaminophen in them. I dont take very much Ibuprofen. If I werent allergic to Naproxin Id prefer to take it as a pain reliever.

Naproxen (Aleve) is my go to over the counter pain reliever. Nothing is better than Aleve for me.

my mom prefers advil because tylenol doesn't work for her but she's allergic to advil. :( she has a prescription to tramadol instead to use sparingly.

I use both with no preference for headaches. But for migraines it's Acetaminophen all the way.

Ibuprofen is the only one that works on me. I never knew why but Acetaminophen makes me feel nauseated and sometimes increases the pain I've felt. This video left me the question though - if we don't know now acetaminophen even works :| why is it an over the counter drug? If we don't know how it works how do we know what the long term side effects would be.

Acetaminophen works better for me, but I can't take it anymore because of liver issues, so I'm stuck with Ibuprofen, which is now killing my stomach instead.

Acetaminophen, not because I think it's better, but because it was always in my house. My mother is allergic to Ibuprofen [and related drugs].

Where I'm from, we've got a drug that contains both ibuprofen and paracetamol (acetaminophen) in reasonable doses, but I prefer to just take ibuprofen.

While sure Ibuprofen works slightly better for me, Paracetamol (Acetaminophen) works quite good as well. For really strong pain (like a really nasty migraine) I'd take Ibuprofen though. Actually Paracetamol is fine in this case too but then I'd take 2x500mg of that to be sure that it's working really good (or 400mg Ibuprofen. There are very few cases when I take 800mg). My body reacts quite positively with those medicine, like I don't really have to take much and after 20 minutes I feel pretty relieved after having quite strong pain (especially headache and migraine).

Ibuprofen is really good if you have nausea caused by your monthly period. I also prefered it when the lymph nodes in my neck swelled up and became painful. For a fever, tylenol is okay, but even then, ibuprofen seems better. So, for me, Ibuprofen it is!

Tylenol has always made my headaches worse. Ibuprofen is the only thing that works for headaches and migraines (for me) but, when it comes to physical pain somewhere else in my body, tylenol seems to help more.
