Ice used after an injury or surgery can help control pain, swelling, and inflammation. It may help with regaining range of motion following a total knee. Too much ice, especially applied directly to the skin, can cause damage. Options on icing include a bag filled with ice, a reusable ice pack, or an ice machine.

For the ice machine you shown, freeze 8 or 12, 16 oz water bottles in the freezer. Put 4 at a time in the cooler, easier than ice cubs. When they thaw, toss them back in the freezer and grab 4 more of the frozen bottles.

I used an ice machine. It was great! My range of motion is 135° flexion after 3 weeks, and I am just 1° from the PT's goal. 👍🇮🇱🙌

I bought an ice machine on Amazon because my insurance wouldn't cover a rental machine. I LOVE my ice machine for my TKR. It helped with swelling and pain so I hardly needed anything for pain other than Ibuprofen and Tylenol. I still use it after biking. There are so many benefits. I would recommend it to anyone getting a TKR.

Game Ready Ice Machine cost about 3K. Stupid money. However, going through 1 TKR and scheduling 2nd TKR I am desperately looking for the Game Ready. This machine is a game changer for TKR, especially the first 3 weeks. I was turned onto this machine by my PT people and is the mack daddy of pain control. All the 150 to 200 ice machines are passive but lack the performance of Game Ready. Good Luck all you TKR peeps.

Good point about those who invest in the ice machine will do it more often. That's exactly how I felt, and it's really helped me. The 30 minutes on - 10 minutes off interval really works for me. I do that several cycles each day. Mine was around $200+ because I have the bilateral connector to do both of my knees at the same time. Really good investment.

I used an ice machine for my TKR. I liked it because I could adjust the amount of cold by using more or less ice and flow through the cold wrap. It kept me comfortable. Sometimes my knee was swollen and inflamed other times I just needed some tap over my knee to keep it comfortable. When I have the other knee replacement soon I will definitely be using my machine again.

I have watched a lot of video clips these past few months. Today KZfaq suggested Dr Rosen's Range of Motion video, and then I found this video about Ice. I'll be going through every knee video from Dr Rosen over the next 17 days. Thank you! Informative, direct. Awesome.

I used an ice machine with both knee replacement and strongly feel they helped much more than pain relieving drugs. My 2nd knee replacement which was in May 2022 saw me stopping Tramadol after 3 days and using only Tylenol and Aleve. The ice machine was an invaluable tool after the first couple of weeks of physical therapy too. Thank you for the suggestion of replacing the pad when loaning the ice machine. Although I kept a hand towel on the incision area anytime I used it, the suggestion is definitely an excellent one as I’m loaning my machine to a good friend having TKA in April. Also…thank you for your videos. They helped me so much before and after both my TKAs as did your book. All the best!

Dr Rosen I’ve watched all your videos on TKA the first week I had my surgery. This is my 5th week now post op . I was never told what to expect from this surgery. The first few days after my surgery the pain was unbearable. Nothing would relieved my pain. I really thought I would die. I’m so glad I’ve my family to assist me at home. I still wanted to be independent and do things for my self. I’m 72 yrs old RN with 50 yrs of experience in ICU and now doing case management in Critical Care full time until my knee went out in Nov of 2022. I have the best surgeon in town but I didn’t know what to do and what to expect after my surgery. This surgery happened so quickly. After surgery I didn’t know what to do. I went to KZfaq and so glad to find you. Your videos on TKA are exactly what I needed about my surgery. I’m doing PT twice a week and all the exercises you recommended are same ones my PT are doing with me. I’m also doing my part by doing the exercises 3X a day at home. My knee bent in 2 weeks is at 98 degrees, 4 weeks 117 degrees. ADL’s: I was walking with a walker alone after 7 days. Shower alone after 7 days. Cane after 3 weeks. My PT said walk without after 4 weeks. Pain management: I was off narcotics in two weeks. I’m taking Advil every 8 hrs. At 3 weeks Advil twice a day. Pain is minimal mostly ache. Your teaching on pain medications, was very critical. People need to read the labels. Activities: Stay up all day. Read. Cook, household chores. Go to bed at the same everyday. Sleep 8 to 10 hrs a day. Goal: I will be back to work as a nurse in 8 weeks. They all know at the hospital where I work I’m a Survivor! My sincere thanks to you Dr Rosen for all the teachings you have shared to us. My speedy recovery is because of you. I thank you from the bottom of heart. I wish you more success Dr Rosen. God Bless.

I’ve tried extra strength Tylenol for my tkr and it worked maybe twice. I had two tkrs on the same knee within three and a half years because a Raunchy doctor did a screwed up surgery on the first one. I discovered ice actually relieves my knee pain, along with exercise.

Thank you so much for your videos ... I've watched all your videos that I can find they are very helpful indeed. I'm watching from the UK and have had my surgery cancelled several times? 😜 This was due to a urine infection, which is recurring!!! I really hope that it goes smoothly this time according to plan.. not that I'm not scared 😨. Thank you again....... ...

I am on Day 9 after TKR. My husband has been my guardian angel throughout this whole process. On a flight from DFW to SEA, he interviewed the passenger next to him about her TKR, and she said the ice machine made a big improvement. He learned all he could from her. My surgeon sent me back from the operating room with an ice machine and a CPM. I remembered what you said about “don’t reuse the pad” and my husband inquired with the hospital equipment guy, who said we could keep the pad. My guardian angel/ husband connected the pad to some tubing, and a small pump, placed in an ice chest with frozen water bottles. It has kept cool water flowing since my release from the hospital on the day after surgery. The pliable water cooled pad is much more comfortable than the stiff frozen gel packs I have used when I did not want to lug the cooler across the house.

Dr. Rosen, I have a simple ice machine. It gave me relief when I had shoulder surgery a few years ago. I have had both knees replaced. using it now. Currently 5 weeks post op on my left knee. Not sure I am getting relief from swelling. I am getting relief from pain, especially when icing the side and back of my knee after my ROM exercises. Psychosomatic? Perhaps. I feel relief from using it. I use it a couple of times daily; for 20-30 minutes. Thanks for your covering this topic.

is it true that you can keep the ice machine on all night as it is not actual ice on the skin but cold water, when they say ice can only be left on 20 minutes at a time.

I’m 2 weeks after surgery today. I have an ice machine and elevate but am not finding any relief from pain. I do it anyway. I’ve tried oxycodone…pain still no change in pain. At 2 weeks I decided I’d rather get off pain Rx so am decreasing slowly and using Tylenol and ibuprofen l.
