I used to work at a Toyota dealership as a Salesman and you’re completely right but you have to take one thing into consideration right now if you get a car for MSRP you’re getting a good deal since most of the cars are being marked up more than 5k, and if they’re giving you MSRP there would be fees that cannot be negotiated like the Proc/Doc Fee, registration (unless you’re out of state and are buying a car with cash), and taxes. So if you’re expecting to pay less than MSRP you’re going to have a rough time finding a good deal. What I would recommend is that y’all hide the fact that y’all are going to have a trade in and money down until the end of the process and have in mind how much money y’all want to get for y’all’s vehicle
@IdealMediaChannel
@IdealMediaChannel 2 жыл бұрын
Great info Ruber! Definitely agree about hiding your trade in and money down till the end. It is hard to find a car for under MSRP… but we may or may not have just bought a 392 Wrangler for 10% UNDER MSRP. You just got to know what triggers to pull to get deals. Always be willing to work a deal and buy the best value… and you should be good! Curious. What was the most popular car you sold at your dealership?

And if I could bring them down to $550 from $650 I am sure theres waaay to much left on the table, withthe new model coming in I am expecting the Msrp to drop from $44K CAD to about $32K ish, But the new car is soo good, What should I do?

The best part about walking away is sometimes it forces them to show THEIR hand. I was looking at a used 2019 GTI Rabbit in Cornflower Blue and they kept asking what my monthly payment was that I was looking for. I wouldn't give them an exact number and just asked them what they could do for me. They tried offering me 13% at 72 months, then 10% at 84 months, and they kept saying that's as good as it's gonna get as I try to haggle with them. My fiancé and I leave, we get 30 minutes away to stop for lunch before driving another 1 1/2 hours home and we get a phone call. "We just got a financing offer in and they're willing to give you 3.75% at your 72 month term you were looking for." Got enough for my trade to break even on my current loan and got the car for the middle range of KBB value. Haven't seen another CFB Rabbit pop up in a 250 mile radius since.

I have been to 4 metro Milwaukee dealerships in the last month. All have their new cars marked up with $3000 market adjustments plus other miscellaneous charges of $2500 or so. So I have been able to beat the dealerships a few times. For my Pilot, I found out that they mistakenly marked it off $9000 online because they had an identical base model on the lot. Once they showed their cards, I showed them mine. I had a calculator on me to show them where they moved the numbers and even wrote it on that paper. I got my trade in in writing and had them compete with my credit union (which I never had) for the loan. In the end, I got a 3 yr old Pilot for $7k less even after paying it off. My last bit of advice was never be afraid to walk away.

My last trick was calling a dealership that I had intended on buying a car from. Instead of asking for the SUV I was looking for, I was looking for my trade. I love to find a white solara with a V6 and a moon roof with low miles. My budget was $12k or $250/mon. I knew this exact car was no where on their lot or in their dealer network. I called a few times to see if they found the car. They had not. The following day I drove in my trade and they were happy to give me $8k towards my SUV. After buying it, they call me back (I’ve been using my company phone this whole time) to say they found the Solara I’ve been looking for. I told them I was able to find one for $8k in my hometown.

Back several years ago, I went to a VW dealer. I had been a VW customer for almost 20 years at that point. I was looking to get a diesel Touareg lease, but the numbers the finance guy came back with was higher than it would've been for a purchase over the same term. I told him numerous times to "check the math", and that they likely just missed a checkbox somewhere. After being there for a couple hours, I left. The following morning, I went to an Audi dealer, explained exactly what I wanted to a sales guy, who directed me to a Q5 TDI, and I was driving home within an hour. The "willingness to leave" is the most important card you can play. A point you brought up, but feel it needs more emphasis. They don't make any real profit on the cars, they make it on add-ons and financing. The minute you're prepared to leave the table, they know you won't be back. The ones that can't wield this over them, likely have less than ideal credit. If you come to the table with cash, or at least credit from elsewhere, they don't have many avenues to squeeze money out of you.

As a former salesman I’m so happy I can say I’ve never used the 4 square method. I never tried to manipulate people with number on that paper. Didn’t feel right. In the 13 months I was there, I was top salesman 6 of those months and never once looked at a 4 square
@scottr2706
@scottr2706 2 жыл бұрын
As a former car sales person you know the customer is actually negotiating with the sales manager. Unless, of course, that customer is a lay down. The sales person is just a middleman between the customer and the sales manager. The smart car buyer uses the sales person as a tool. IMHO, any car deal that does not involve the sales manager is a bad deal for the customer. You also know every sales manager uses the four square. These days it is rare for the dealer to present the sales offer on an actual four square sheet of paper. But the sales manager always views the dealer as three parts: price, trade, and financing. Any offer from the sales manager will be based on the net of these three parts.

From my own experience, I placed an order for the brand new 2015 frs RS1. Just negotiated for free all weather mats and car cover. Put down deposit for the full msrp price of the car. A week later, they told me the car is in another province and will need to trailer to my current dealership and that will cost additional $500 and that’s gonna be my cost. I told them, heck no, I am already paying for the destination fees and stuff. I would be happy to take my deposit back and walk away. The sales man said he will call me back. Which he did and said they will cover the cost for the delivery. Something like this is totally ridiculous, and like brad said, these dealership will do anything to squeeze every dollar out of you. Also when you do finance a car, take a close look at “cost of borrowing” for luxury car brands, it could cost up to thousands of dollars

I usually make it clear right from the start that I’ve done my research and come in with my price. The only way they are willing to sell the car I want for my price is the financing. So I’ll let the sales man have that to lock in the deal. Then after one month(waiting for the first bill) I’ll have my low interest credit Union pay off the entire loan. Everybody wins except the dealer’s finance department.

Surely they called me 3 days in a row after and I still was firm with my offer but thinking that I would fold they still wouldn’t budge. So I said “you just lost yourself a deal over $700 I’m no longer interested”

Well the easy way to do it is ask a salesman what is the cash price is. Then he's trying to get you in to his office so he will give you a low number ask him if he will give that in writing. Now if he says yes then tell him to PDF it to you. Then go to your bank where you going to get the loan for about 4% instead of 9 to 11% at the dealership. Now you've got them by the balls cause you got it in writing. So they can't back out cause of a law suit. This is how I got my 2018 Chevy Silverado 1500 of cours the salesman got fired and so on but they won't scam you. They want to play dirty you need to learn how too play dirty. 😆

Like the vid. Yeah, I know it's usually best to get a used car not from a dealership. There was a circumstance in which I was too intimidated not to look at a used car dealership when I was in San Diego temporarily for work and due to come back home to Bremerton, WA in a month. My own personal car, a 2012 Mustang got totally in a wreck caused by a negligent driver. And I needed to get another personal vehicle to get me home. I spent 4 weeks looking for something. Because I was over 1,000 miles from home, I was too intimidated to try private parties much because many were over 30 miles from San Diego and there was the obstacle of getting a ride up to where the car would be. So, settled for a used car dealership in S.D. with another car that got my eye, a 2007 Chevy HHR with a 5-speed manual transmission and 94K miles on it. I bought that car because it had a stick and folding down rear seats so that I could transport more items home. But because of where I was and knowing how the HHR is obviously not the #1 best car in the world, I was too chicken not to pay a little extra for 1 of the dealership's warranties. Also, automatics are car more common on HHRs and can be easily more problematic. I did refuse to take any monthly payment or finance plans and chose to negotiate a 1-time payment to take the car off their inventory. I didn't want to pay interest nor a finance fee. I see how right you are, Brad, about avoiding used car dealerships. Iwas just under some rather adverse circumstances that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy, not that I really care at all about my worst enemy. I feel I got a better deal than I could've, if I didn't negotiate the price to what I did, but still could've possibly overspent for the same car just by a margin. But again, I was under the circumstances that I was under. And I did get a good reliable car that got me home. And even though I got a replacement Mustang within 2 weeks after returning home, I still waited 6 months before selling the HHR. And I joined a couple HHR Fan Clubs on Facebook, since no regrets. Another than having to decide between that car and the Mustang, I kick myself for selling it. BUT, I took my time doing it.

The dealership wanted $8500 for it, So I was like yea let’s do it. So my parents put a deposit down on the car and they were supposed to move it to a dealer closer to home for us to look at it, we did indeed plan on buying it. But they never ended up delivering it because they sold it to someone else despite our deposit. My parents were very pissed off and they did end up refunding our deposit and they claimed that the “missed a manager in an email”. Still upset and still looking for another car. 😪 wish me luck

Best option is to go ask loan from bank before you go to dealership, you might get lower interest rate if you have good credit. So try to get as much from your used car, even if you have to take longer period financial term with higher interest with the dealer, because you can pay that back with the lower interest loan you got from bank when the first bill comes

I just bought a 2024 4Runner new from dealer. I went in knowing how to play. First thing I said was I need out the door price. I wouldn’t talk about payments. I also wasn’t trading in my other truck. I got my 4Runner $2000 below msrp plus reg, tax,title and doc fee of $280. So had my out the door price. Then because the car hadn’t been delivered to dealer yet I made it clear NO ADD ONS. Oh and also I’m paying cash. Best car buying experience I’ve ever had.

An excellent strategy that can be applied universally... There was one occasion I visited a dealership to buy a new model... I said I'd be paying cash, what's the best price you could give me, on the road... Agreeing with the price I got my chequebook out, yes there was a time people used cheques, I asked, out of interest, what would you have given me for my car? I did the maths and wrote the cheque minus the value of my car... The dealer looked as if he was about to have a heart attack...

Well we can all do a consumer strike and not buy from a dealership for 2 months. If we can get all the car youtubers to announce this we all can win. The same thing with the house market. Consumers have the power we just all need to unite.

I was always aware that if they extend the loan payments, it's obvious you are paying more interest. However, I never thought about what you just mentioned that the interest rate goes up for longer loans. Really smart these dealers! Thanks for the info...I guess they are like the casinos, the house always wins! LOL

I bought my wife a new suv right after Harvey hit Houston back in 2017…and securing financing before hand was the best thing I did. Two dealerships pretty much refused to work with me…which told me everything I needed to know about them. Ended up getting her suv at a 2%.

I heard that dealerships don't like to deal with people who are paying cash for their vehicle because the don't make much from the sale is this true? and also I have excellent credit and I can now get financing from the dealer I have accounts with my local Teacher credit union as well as an account with a Tech credit union are these better financing options? I want to get my first sports car but I'm not sure which road to take.

All my friends always ask how much a month, I don't really care about the payments as long as I can afford it. My question is how much out the door. I got my jeep gladiator last year for $38779 after taxes and fees, took about 6hrs. Now the dealer is offering me $43k to buy back due to shortages

I bought a used VW off of an Audi lot and told them what I wanted to pay for it out the door and that I was considering financing. I knew that old VW was taking up space on their tiny lot where they rather put a luxury car. Their mistake was when I asked them how they were breaking down the costs. Yes their screen was showing the break down but it also showed what they gave the guy before me as a trade. I added $500 to that amount and worked from there. In the end I got a great car that at a VW dealership would have been easily $5k more.

Some dealerships are physically designed for psychological manipulation. I've seen some offices actually show camera footage of the staff fully detailing and washing the car you've selected to negotiate for 🤣. Get up and walk if your terms are not met.

I thought I was well versed in the 4 square game and knew where all my numbers should be but still fell victim. I sold an Acura to Carvana and found the replacement at an Acura dealership. I negotiated the out of the door price over the phone and had finance rates from my local credit union. I wanted to finance again through Acura finance and assumed they would match the rate I had from the credit union. Even though my credit score was 800+, they charged me a full percentage point higher on the interest rate. It was at that point I learned dealers make most of their money on the finance side rather than the car selling side. I refinanced the loan 2 weeks later and was able to get back to the interest rate I wanted.

In the UK an 'on the road' price has to be shown for any car, new or second hand. For a new car this includes any and all taxes and fees so you know what you will pay. A former work colleague was extolling the virtues of a PCP they had been offered opposed to a loan or outright purchase, they thought it was wonderful to have a low deposit, low monthly payments and the option to trade in or purchase the car after 3 years. I ghad a look at the figures and they would have been paying about 10% over list to keep the car and if they handed it back then it would have to be pristine or the 'guarenteed' trade in value would rapidly fall. Two rules when buying a new vehicle: 1 - any "offers" are in the interest of the seller not the buyer 2 - saving up and buying outright is cheaper in the long run
