A Lake Nona campus would help Disney balance their perspectives a bit which would be especially important for Imagineers because the majority of their work for the US is for the Florida parks. LA based imaginers are what gave us the horrible Epcot projects with no shade and no character.

My father was pressured to move. He almost did, but didn’t because they gave him another 2 years. He had to fly to florida a lot to help. My mom was complaining that we didn’t move yet. Now we are so thankful. All of my dads friends from work are outraged that they were pressured to move, and can’t afford California prices to move back

I was at the company when this whole thing started. A lot of the Imagineers were upset about having to relocate.

There are many pockets of Disney, corp. that resented the power and sway the Imagineering held over the company and Chapek was one of them. The Lake Nona stunt wasn’t about saving taxes, it was about inducing Imagineering attrition. If one party (Disney) makes assurances to another party (Imagineering) and that second party reasonably relies on the assurances to their detriment, the first party, Disney, is responsible for damages. Disney will settle because the jeopardy to Disney isn’t in the action itself, it’s in the skeletons dredged up in discovery.

I’m also surprised Disney was stupid enough to willingly get rid of all those talented people. No wonder ride quality has been terrible lately. Like sure the constant budget cutting doesn’t help but it’s definitely also the fact that they fired all their talent.

Gensler can't do what Disney Imagineering once did. What we are witnessing is the interbreeding to corporate entities and what is lost is design and execution for the sake of budget and marketing. An east coast campus would make absolute sense. Now how it was handled is another story.

I’ve lived in Northern California my whole life and the saying around here is that if you leave California, there’s almost no way of getting back because of how expensive the housing market is (both rent and mortgage).

As some have mentioned, there were two reasons Disney wanted to move their offices to Florida. 1) get their engineers closer to the majority of their parks and 2) lower cost of business. The only reason Disney cancelled their plans is out fear of government retaliation from anti-conservative DeSantis. With DeSantis weaponizing the government against Disney, there was no telling what hidden costs Disney would have to eat in the future. Before anyone says anything, I disagree with Disney's political view, but the whole point of Conservatism is minimized government and no fear that the government will attempt to oppress a person or business based on personal opinions. You can't call yourself a conservative if you're weaponizing the government to target a business or person for their personal beliefs, no matter how much you disagree with them. Disney really should have developed a plan on how to properly handle the situation if they (and they did) backed out of the move, maybe even looked into buying some kind of insurance to help pay out employees that got wronged in this scenario. Bob Iger and Bob Chapek have really screwed up Disney in this era. They're like my dad. If they would have just shut up and not tried to spread any shit, they would not have been in this situation.

I agree government should not harass Disney, but "weaponizing the gov't" is hardly what's happened. With Disney's illegal abuse of the Reedy Creek arrangement, not acting would have been irresponsible. All the Florida legislature did was level the field, applying to Disney the same rules enforced on Universal and other corporations. The other legal actions are just successful responses to legal attacks initiated by Disney. Frankly, Disney's been cutting off their nose to spite their face with horrendously bad management decisions. I'm quite certain that if Disney came up with a legal and mutually beneficial economic plan, DeSantis would cooperate.

Around 1980 Prudential went from having 7 national Home Offices to 3. Hundreds had to relocate to keep their jobs. Get over Yourselves !

I would counter argue that Prudential probably didn't order employees to move, only to decide to reopen the office they moved from and close the office they moved to.
