This is Part 2 of 2 of what turned out to be a definite adventure. We like to say, "Not all trips are successful, but all trips are adventures full of memories worth preserving." That said, enjoy part two of our latest adventure into the beautiful Indian Peaks Wilderness.
After a hard day on trail, we were grateful to find a place to camp for the night. We were tired, drained and in much need of a rest, especially after not backpacking much all summer. Are bodies were not used to the hard climbs at altitude, but we managed. We made camp, refueled and looked forward to day two of our ne reality of hiking thru the wonderful Indian Peaks Wilderness.
The night, however, would prove to be anything but restful. Lanie was not having it. Both of our pups are recues, and with rescues you never know what you will get, other than an animal who was abused. We accept them and their mental wounds with open arms. Lanie gets very nervous in new settings, and after not being in the wilderness much all summer, she was reverting back to her nervous self. With that comes inflamed bowel syndrome. In a nut shell, a puppy with an upset tummy and diarrhea.
We didn't sleep, nor did Lanie. The morning would come and we would be faced with the decision to get off trail. We needed to get Lanie home and in a familiar place were she could calm down and regain her normal life again. generally, after returning home, she returns to normal within a few days. This would again prove true. The more she is exposed to unfamiliar places, the more she relaxes with them, but we hadn't been backpacking much of late and she became nervous.
Getting off trail, knowing a our car was 25ish miles away would prove to be an entirely new adventure we had not planned on. An adventure, none the less. We chose an extraction point we could hike out to, a road walk that would ensue, and a small town we would hopefully be able to get a ride from to our car. Amazingly, it worked. We met a new friend who reaffirmed our faith in good people still existing in our world. A the end of the day, we are home, safe and doing well. It was an adventure, not what we had planned on, but a story, a memory and an experience we now have to add to those we have already have. Life is grand!
