In my G37 the best mpg I managed to get with economical driving (city) was 16.5. On the highway 22.4 is the absolute best I could ever get. If I get heavy footed in the city it goes below 10 mpg.

Good video. Judt checked my mew 2024 Subaru crosstrek wilderness and its estimated mpg on the dash was not only dead on, but oddly, also matched the manufacturer mpg rating. I knew the wilderness edition would not get as good mpg as a normal crosstrek due to the 4.11 gears out back and different transmission programming and other differences. But im happy it is exactly what they said it would be.

I just acquired a G37x, and I need to be more.. well, less heavy footed with the pedal lol. I have a turbo 350z, and I moved my daily from a Subaru Legacy 2.5i to the 2012 G37x. Let me tell you, the power difference...the VQ37VHR is a beast lol. So it's one of those 'damn i like this power' thing. I digress, my point here: I keep pushing the throttle hard off accel. and I keep redlining in manual mode for the hell of it lol. I know from a few different factors, how you 'drive' the entire duration while doing this calculated test changes how your MPG will actually become, and the on-dash calculator may be incorrect when factoring in specific amounts of fuel-dumps when you push the throttle from 30% to 100%, which is why it is going to be a difference of 1 off. As far as my personal testing goes, I haven't tried yet, but mine keeps reading 15-18mpg and I have gotten ~210 miles and i'm on half a tank so far. I believe these are 20 gallon tanks, calculated math would tell me I'm honestly averaging around probably 20mpg, which is well more than what the computer states. I believe the lesson taken here is that the computer isn't too savvy at calculating the amount of fuel actually dumped into the engine while under heavy load, and a lot of this could stem from the VQ37VHR and the tuning on that engine. Needless to say, 18-20MPG is still far better than my Subaru Legacy, which developed an insane head-gasket leak, with various other issues, which averaged around 15-18MPG. Which would I prefer personally? The Infiniti gives me more MPG and Smiles Per Gallon...sooo...Infiniti it is lol.

Hey, Alex! Love your informative vids. It may have already been mentioned, but I was thinking that the odometer, speedo, and MPG calculator is likely based on the distance the wheel travels per rotation. So, even a slight change in wheel/tire size (from the original factory calibration) seems like it would decrease the accuracy of the Average MPG's... Your thoughts?

Bottom line is don’t buy a G37 if your looking for great gas mileage... with that being said if your looking for a badass car with nice styling, great reliability record, respectable power, and the best sounding motor , then go for it and buy that G37 . I own a 09 g37 x sedan live in New York City Brooklyn, and I get between 10-11 mpg city . On the highway though I’ve gotten as high as 27 mpg . But then again I bought it to enjoy regardless of what mpg I get .

I get 32 mpg on the highway on my 2009 infiniti g37 sedan. Its stock, no spare tire, no back seats, very little personal items, tires at 40 psi and cruise control on. I have to do more testing to cofirm actual mpg. I got the number from the dashboard screen.

Good effort, I liked the vid. Few things that would have helped: The calculator doesn't count gas lost at idle at stops, temperature and load on the car (uphill vs downhill) varies and fluctuation in the rpm (how heavy your foot is on the throttle and what drive mode your in), and you also reset the calculator when the tank was 1/3 full (instead of almost empty). All effect these results. Also resetting the calculator each time makes it less accurate. The longer the calculator runs the more data is has. The overall average becomes more accurate in the computer. Ideally you should have reset the calculator when the tank was running on fumes. Then filled up the tank and repeated (without resetting the calculator) 3 times. That would of been more accurate.

I don’t know if this was completely accurate but based on the test I’d say just assume your true MPG is 1 mile less the whatever you car says at the moment.

You'd have to do a test with like a gallon gas tank and make sure you were getting the right amount of gas from these machines. It'd be cool to make it like a double feat. Video and talk about getting skimped on gas.

The gas pumps might be cheating you.... if the pumps are rigged to tell you that you got 20 gallons when you actually got 19.5 gallons the gas station makes more money..... your car knows you only burned 19.5 gallons but you take the 20.0 gal number from the pump and plug it in your calculator and come up with a lower MPG than the car.... gas pumps are supposed to be certified by local / county / state weights & measures bureaus, but how much you want to bet that if you did actual volumetric tests to audit the pumps, you'd find some errors... errors always in the gas station's favor. Just sayin'

Hey Alex, I think there is one issue with your experiment. On the first run, you showed how the MPG calculator said you've achieved 20.4 MPG, and when you did the math, you came up with 19~MPG. Although your math is correct, your car was giving you your MPG based on if you were gonna drive until you were near empty on gas. I guess that is an important flaw with the car since it doesn't provide accurate REAL time mpg.

I Love my 2013 Infiniti G37 Journey Sedan; However my 1994 BMW 325I Sedan is more on the Money when it comes to fuel calculations!

Weird. Mine was the opposite. My computer calculated 21-22 mpg on the road, but I calculated 26 at the pump driving from GA to TX.

The problem with the video is that it's using a wrong premise. The odo screen doesn't tell you your current mpg. It tells you your possible mpg if you drive at the provided mph. Your current mpg is shown on the big screen.

What kind of driving did you do? That's low for what they say you get from highway driving which is 27 MPG. 18MPG for city. A little of both should net you around 22 MPG.

Just did my calculations (M37x) off full up and got 21.21. car reads Avg 20.6. A lot of variables do take affect that we don't calculate. My first full up was 16.85 gallons wow talking about down to the last drop with a 17gal tank. Second was 15.006. With bad tires im surprise I got a high mpg when calculating.

I keep a dated mileage log for the time of ownership. Gas, maintenance, trips, etc.. On my G37 the indicated MPG never matched the calculated MPG. But was consistent so I had an idea of what MPG I was getting. Simple. Factors: air trapped in tank, fill level differences. Real Mpg can be different than calculated MPG.another isdue: What is your real speedo error? Tire size, speedo/odometer gear etc. Quick check use a GPS speedo app. I had a truck that the speedo/odometer was over 10% under actual miles. SOooo my 100,000 mile warranty ran out over 10% early! How much money does that save a company. Criminal in my opinion. They intentionally put the wrong speed drive gear in all the cars. Quote, the reason given by co rep was "for your protection. Slowing you down and preventing speeding tickets." Yep, thanks for stealing from us all. Do you really think it was to save lives and fuel? Not! Mile markers on the highway make checking this real easy. Set trip odometer to 0 at a mile marker. Go 10 20, 100, to a mile marker, what ever miles you want, and compare to the trip odometer. My Dodge showed 111 miles for every 100 I really drove. Think of the big picture and the massive amounts of money the companies save at the customer's expense.

I think companies do that on purpose so that when you think your car is completely empty, you’ll actually have an extra miles worth of gas to refill without it shutting off so fast. Ya digg

I really enjoyed the video! I have always noticed that the car is never correct. Slightly off as you stated. I do think there is a sync difference in the gauge cluster MPG calculator vs the nav screen MPG calculator. I "believe" the nav screen records and calculates recent trips (engine start and off time frame) whereas the gauge cluster records driving over time regardless of start/stop. Correct me if I'm wrong, opinions are welcome too.

Temperature has a huge difference too. Just as an FYI. The hotter the ambient temperature, the more the gasoline and gas tank expands. Floater will think you have more gas than you think you do, and the calculation done by the computer will be off.

i havent reset my ECU yet, but mine says i average 19-20 miles a gallon and with 20 gallons i should be getting 380 to 400 a tank but my estimated miles till empty stays at 343 when i fill it up lol so maybe it is guessing due to whoever drove the car before me

Your speedometer and mileometer might also be wrong

All you do is dived miles into gal. The indash isn’t accurate it simply gives you avg mpg in that moment in time where your driving. If you use your 200 miles / 10 gal fill up ask 20mpg simple

To answer the question is their are variables called density of fuel temp outside lot goes into it I’ll be more able to give details if needed. Despite your accuracy of trying to avoid. Example weather cold temp get better mpg when you fill up. Depending when the pumps were filled. So your car is giving the driving avg. not your mpg / distance per gal so it’s diffeent two different things
