You forget the range Paul had, for some reason he rarely displayed it? Even John Lennon called him "The Voice," so it was no secret to his mates.

Paul could do mellow and he could belt them out, but you never knew what he was going to do next. He wrote all sorts of songs, even country such as Sally G.

This performance was during the Wings Over America tour in 1976. The studio version of this was recorded in 1975 for Wings’ album VENUS & MARS. The Beatles broke up in 1970, but there are a few tracks the Beatles recorded where Paul sings in this mode: “Lady Madonna” is one. The Beatles did some covers in 1963-5 which showcase Paul’s versatility; I recommend their recording of “Long, Tall Sally.” An original of theirs called “She’s A Woman” is a real knock out.

The vocal is a screamer , but I think the song itself is channeling the great Fats Domino, of whom Paul was a big admirer. He may have been going more for a Wilson Pickett thing vocally.

Both Paul and John's vocals have a lot of "Character" and emotion or passion. Sometimes happy and playful, other times seriously making a point, but always as you said, "Extremely Versatile"

Paul's first album after leaving the Beatles was McCartney, an album where he played all the instruments. Next out was Ram, bill as Paul and Linda McCartney. He used studio musicians on it. The third solo release was Wing Wild Life, Wings being his newly formed band. They were together throughout the '70s. My favorite song by them was Junior's Farm.

It's not THE Wings it's just Wings. Paul's vocals were something else mid 70s First band he formed after the Beatles. Went right up to 79/80 with various line ups. I think this was the best line up though

JMBOY, you probably didn't listen to these Beatles' songs : "HELTER SKELTER," "OH DARLING," "LONG TALL SALLY," "LADY MADONNA," where Paul sang in a similar voice as on this video. WINGS was formed by Paul and Linda McCartney, Denny Laine and Denny Seiwell, in 1981. The members you see here in this live '76 concert video is Paul (on piano), Denny Laine (on bass here, because Paul is playing the piano, otherwise Paul would be on bass, Denny would then be on guitar), Jimmy McCulloch on lead guitar, Joe English on drums, and Linda McCartney on keyboards and backing vocals. Through the years '71 - '81 they had other members : Henry McCullough on lead (he played on "Maybe I'm Amazed"), & Geoff Britain on drums. The very last incarnation of WINGS, the members were: Paul, Linda, Denny Laine (the core of WIngs throughout), Steve Holley on drums, & Laurence Juber on lead guitar. Paul was either playing bass or piano, Denny Laine would also play, bass, piano, or rhythm guitar, Linda on keyboards, percussion, piano and backing vocals. All the other guys would do backing vocals as well, and also sing lead on some songs. After Wings, Paul and Linda continued on with various other members in their band which really didn't have a band name. Paul ALSO played drums on many of his recordings after the Beatles, especially for the BAND ON THE RUN album, where it was just Paul, Linda and Denny. Paul played drums on the entire album, along with bass and guitar. From 1989 through 1993 Paul''s band consisted of Linda, Robbie McIntosh guitar (he used to be in the group PRETENDERS), Hamish Stuart on guitar & bass (if Paul wasn't playing bass), Paul "WiX" Wickens on keyboards, and Chris Whitten on drums....and later Blair Cunningham took over the drums. In 2001 Paul McCartney's band members were : Rusty Anderson on guitar, Brian Ray on guitar & bass (when Paul is not playing bass), Paul "WIX" Wiggins on keyboards, and Abe Laboriel, Jr. on drums. Paul as usual would play either bass, lead guitar, or piano depending on which song they were doing. His wife Linda, died in 1998 from breast cancer, otherwise, she may have still been in the band. The other members all did backing vocals, with Paul singing lead. THIS GROUP of musicians has continued to be Paul's BAND TO THE PRESENT DAY. SO THIS LINE UP has been the one that has lasted the longest.

It’s a tough call for me to choose my favorite Wings album - it’s so close between ‘Band on the Run’ and ‘Venus and Mars,’ which this song is on. Wings were very successful yet always overshadowed by The Beatles lore. They deserve more credit, definitely the group of the 70s ❤

"YES".... another Classic Rock name who produced so much incredible music they virtually created a new genre of music called "Prog-Rock" (Progressive). Each member is certainly a legend among the best musicians ever known, as you will discover this most amazing band..... "I've Seen All Good People".... "Roundabout"...."Wonderous Stories". "And You And I"....."Long Distance Runaround"..... "Owner Of A Lonely Heart"...."It Can Happen"... "Changes"... "Survival".... "Hold On" ... and at least 40 more...The best word to describe their music is...."YES"

Great to see Paul & Wings live, but I still prefer the studio version of this song. Another one that you get to hear Paul really wail on is “Monkberry Moon Delight” from the RAM album. One of the “Wings” is a super talented musician named Denny Laine, originally with the Moody Blues.

Paul formed wings from 1971-1981 with different band menbers coming and going. This was the best line up in my opinion. Paul is an incredible singer/composer/musician. Denny Laine (guitarist, keyboards, vocalist, and all round musician) was the secret sauce in this version of Wings. His contributions to Wings and his work outside of Wings is huge. Give “Time To Hide” w/ Wings a listen. His solo vocals with Wings in live performances were top notch and gave Paul some well deserved breaks.

@rhhfayetteville

@@thumbsaloft They were all perfectly matched especially on this tour. Creative contributions and versatility would have to go to Laine. Throughout ALL of Wings’ lineups and albums from ’72 to their official end in ‘81, Paul, Linda and Denny were the only members to play on all of the albums. AKA- “secret sauce”. “As the various and revolving line-ups in Wings came and went, Laine was a go-between from Paul/Linda to the rest of the band when they had issues or grumbled about anything from accommodations and Paul telling them what to play to their salary and not getting some of their songs on albums.”

I LOVE LOVE "TIME TO HIDE" especially when Denny performs it in the live '76 concert. I have seen Denny on his own 5 times over the last few years, at smaller venues, where you can actually meet him and chat with him for a bit, GREAT guy, and when I went to see a performance that was actually on my birthday, my friend who was with me, TOLD Denny it was my birthday that night, and he gave me a hug and kiss and his most recent CD. I have a great pic of us that was taken that night. The next time I saw him at one of his concerts, I brought an 8 x 10 copy of that photo, and Denny autographed it for me. He was so personable to everyone, and put on a fabulous show.

Paul could hit very high notes without slipping into falsetto and belt them out with a lot of power. I know he's more recognized for his melodic, softer songs(Hey Jude, Yesterday, I Will, etc.) but people always seem to be shocked by his other side. But if you listen to Long Tall Sally, Oh Darling, Helter Skelter you realize what incredible range he had in his prime.

I TOLD YOU!!! Again I give you MAJOR, MAJOR PROPS you are reacting to McCartney songs that all the other reactors never do, PLEASE KEEP IT UP! I was at this concert, Wings is the band McCartney started after the Beatles broke up! They are ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC and don't get the credit they more than deserve! I want you to know that you have become my favorite reactor because you really are OPEN-MINDED and you really do respond to suggestions. As for McCartney suggestions let me recommend the opening to this same concert. The live versions of the songs ROCKSHOW/JET. They go right into each other so it's a bit of a longer clip and it's more rocking so you will love it. Still waiting on you to react to the MOTHER'S FINEST song from their ANOTHER MOTHER FURTHER album titled TRUTH'LL SET YOU FREE. I'm telling you my man you are going to absolutely love that song! Once again MAJOR PROPS to you MAJOR PROPS!

Paul formed "Wings" shortly after leaving The Beatles and his two solo albums. Paul McCartney and Wings, often billed simply as "Wings", were a British-American rock band formed in 1971 by former Beatles bassist and singer Paul McCartney, his wife Linda McCartney on keyboards, session drummer Denny Seiwell, and former Moody Blues guitarist Denny Laine.
