This homebuilt redneck wood splitter is the most dangerous machine I have ever seen. The though of using this contraption takes my breath away.

I'd have to agree, I've never seen a more dangerous machine. It makes a chainsaw look like a coping saw by comparison. Part of the problem is that it's moving WAY too fast. I have seen similar machines that were moving many time slower, so you at least can see the wedge coming. I see that in the video, the owner is even afraid of it, he kinda shoves the wood in it's direction. NO control. I'd also have to agree, how many of us have tripped splitting wood? Your arm would be gone before you knew it...

bwillan I think it's more a case of common sense. This may be a case where the inventor ends up killed by his own invention. At least he seems to have a healthy fear of it. My Idea of "safety sally" is the people who try to toddler-proof industrial equipment.
@lewisdoherty7621
@lewisdoherty7621 9 жыл бұрын
TheTomBevis As far as toddler-proofing industrial equipment: Unfortunately, there are numerous cases of plaintiff tort attorneys who are able to convince juries to award their moronic clients damages for doing moronic things with equipment. The only large plastic fuel cans that can be obtained now are marked kerosine. That way when an idiot fills a can marked kerosine with gasoline and pours it on a campfire and the flame goes into the can and it explodes, it is much more difficult to collect damages. Sometimes, even the warnings backfire. A friend of mine had some men working on his father's farm building a barbed wire fence. The spool of barbed wire had a warning: Use wire stretcher to tighten wire, do not use tractor or vehicle. The worker read it and thought, pull it with the tractor, that is a good idea. He used the tractor. It snapped and the barbed wire hit him in the back.

THAT one is insanely dangerous, but I've been considering building one and found a bunch more. I too had major safety concerns until I saw the Swedish version where.the wheel was in a wooden box, the axe head was on the side of the wheel, and you'd push your wood thru.a little door with the impact plate as the threshold. The only way it could mess you up would be if you stuck your hand thru the door instead of the wood. Oh, it also had another door and axe head on the other side, so two could process at once, as if anyone really needed that much more speed!

Speaking of home made equipment, my grandpa has a home made buzz saw that he runs with an A/C WD 45 and flat belt used to cut fire wood rounds. He's got it set up kind of like a table saw, with a shield over the blade. My dad and I took this idea and modified our own, we didn't go with a table saw concept but pretty cool in its own right. Makes cutting rounds really easy up to 12" and saves the chain saw blade. I think I have some pictures, maybe some video, I'll have to dig around so I can share it with you. I'm certain that you're familiar with these.

I have a goal of buying some land in a private corner of the north. I want to build my own house out of harvested timber someday. People tend to get caught in the trap of wanting a bigger and bigger house, calling a 3000+ square foot home for a family of four ideal. I think that even a big family can live in a 3 bedroom house if needed.

@Jesses001

dale myers Good idea. Most likely why most log spliters are slow hydraulic pistons that just wedge the wood apart.
@dalemyers9265
@dalemyers9265 9 жыл бұрын
yes, much like a ram splitter. but you wouldn't have the chance of hot hydraulic fluid spraying when a line or fitting breaks.
@Jesses001
@Jesses001 9 жыл бұрын
dale myers That never happened to me, but I can see how it can if you do not replace your lines when they start getting a bit old. I think I will stick to what I am using now, but maybe I will try a flywheel style design some day just to see how well it works.

dale myers Well anything that is capable of splitting a 24 inch round of hardwood end to end is inherently dangerous. I know of a man that was killed when the splitting wedge he was was using kicked off a knot and took his leg off just above the knee and he was wearing leather chaps.
@Jesses001

Haha, I have seen these before too. They COULD be safe with proper guards. Also feeding the logs in sideways is way safer. That particular one, nope I am not getting anywhere near that thing, haha.

Those flywheel splitters make me cringe up watching them in action. My hydraulic splitter is slow and steady but I've had it hit knots and kick out pieces the bruised n knotted up my shins. Those flywheels are so fast that you can get hurt in so many ways. Tho I've always wanted to build a flywheel splitter made like a punch press. If you're not familiar with a punch press they use a heavy flywheel rotating on a crankshaft with a dog clutch that is springed into the flywheel when tripped and only makes one rotation of the crankshaft.
