Hi everyone, My name is Vasil and I am restoring my 1974 Columbia 45 sailboat. Just like with everything in life, this project requires patience, persistence, and a ton of hard work. Planning plays a vital part of making sure things are progressing as they should. Planning for the long term solution means you have to understand where your hard earned money is going, and how it could be used more wisely.
Installing the original 12V refrigerator that came with this boat will allow me to save money by avoiding restaurants on a daily basis. It should come as no surprise to all of you that eating at home not only saves you money, but allows you to have a better nutritional foundation if done properly. My goal with installing this refrigerator is just that; save money and get my diet in check.
The money saved by not eating out can be utilized to further this project. Having better nutrition will allow me to have more energy, more restful sleep, and optimized mood. In turn, this will allow me to have more impactful energy to then direct towards the progression of this restoration.
Given the condition of this boat, there are always hurdles to jump through before the issue you are trying to address is handled. This episode is no different. The snake pit of wires which looms above my steps, and lives in my engine compartment requires attention. I will be tearing out heaps of old wire before the refrigerator can be installed.
If you enjoyed this episode, please give this video a like, this really helps out the channel. If you have not yet subscribed, please consider doing that as well.
Thank you SO much for watching!

Just for safety, run at least 12 guage wire on all circuits. One of the biggest problems I've run into is undersized wire. Previous owners tap into available power because it's easy. Too much voltage drop. Just a suggestion.

Jim, great suggestion. I will keep this in mind when I have a master plan for this boat’s electrical layout.

Two things on a boat that makes life better is better, refrigeration and a BBQ, as well hot water for the sink and shower. By the way, I bought a reefer from a motorhome store and was half the price from West Marine. Keep on going on.

Bob, a BBQ would be amazing! The hot water is so far away... so far away. I'm just showering at the gym. It will likely be months before I even have running water. I will keep on keeping on sir.

Lots of work, lots of progress. Nicely done. Regarding time lapse, It looks like that you are putting the camera on a gimbal or something. This really shakes the video on a time lapse. Great video!

Thank you Marty! The camera is on a tripod, the wake shows much more during Timelapse. I’m working on my filming setup…. So much work ahead, both on the boat and learning how to make better content.

I need to remember that boat time coefficient. You have so much space on that boat, you could grow your own food! Haha. So now that you have lived on the boat for a little while, how is sleeping on the boat compared to sleeping in the traditional sense (bed that does not rock)?
@ambiguousglobetrotter
@ambiguousglobetrotter Жыл бұрын
You’re right, there is so much space on this boat! I actually considered experimenting with some sort of aeroponic setup for veggies… that’s so far down the road though, plenty of more important work in the meantime. The sleeping situation is great! I do get woken up several times through the night when the boat gets hit with rough wake from a passing super tanker or military ship. It really is nice to be rocking all night long lol.

about radio, if i were you - id check it if it works and if it is- get an antenna for it and forget about it for the near future, cus you have a lot more stuff that actually needs money to spend on. also if you don't have multimeter- consider getting one, even the cheapest will be really useful in conquering the wiring of your boat. oh and yeah dont hurry to throw torn out wires away, if they are in good condition and have silicon sleeving-consider reusing them, but first- figure out its gages(in most cases- printed on wires themselves), in non load carrying jobs t ill be more than enough and save you some money, onestly id use them for power outlets for phone\laptop charging and stuff also- hope you checked your emergency water pumps if they are in working condition
@ambiguousglobetrotter
@ambiguousglobetrotter Жыл бұрын
Roger that on the radio. My multimeter is being stubborn right now. Showing an error code, so it’s another thing to fix. All the “decent” wires get put in a bag for organization, agreed that many of them can be reused. Still working on the bilge pumps my friend. At least the boat now has full coverage insurance now…. Man I sleep SOOO much better knowing that! Haha
@pironiero
@pironiero Жыл бұрын
@@ambiguousglobetrotter yeah, insurance is important.. have you checked your thruholes? This is an old boat so there is a chance they are weakened by the age and corrosion
@ambiguousglobetrotter
@ambiguousglobetrotter Жыл бұрын
@@pironiero I've checked as many as I could find. I'm working on a game plan to pull this thing out of the water. San Diego has a couple of good boat yards, however planning to get this out of the water is a challenge. Most of the yards have a 2-3 month waiting list, and if I wanted to pull out for longer than a week it more like 6-7 months on that same list.
@pironiero

@@ambiguousglobetrotter i think it would be best to do your lifting thing twice, first one-asap to replace all the thruholes and check for keel cracks and osmosis (idk actually if your boat is epoxy or any other hygroscopic resins) and after that, knowing wtf is up with your bottom-get in the line for a long haul out (maybe try further marinas(cus prolly cheaper) and sync lifting with vacation (being able to be cram 3 regular days worth of repairs in one) No pressure, in any case it's your decision to make.

Kind of funny, in this state you have enough space to tear out the engine and do full rebuild without pulling your boat out of the water
@ambiguousglobetrotter
@ambiguousglobetrotter Жыл бұрын
The space is there for sure, that engine is so heavy! It’s about 450 kilos. Pulling that thing out during an incoming wake could be disastrous… like real bad! Lol.
