I don’t have a problem with any cameras . I have used them for several years. Great tool and allows you to truly know what’s happening where you hunt. You made a point I agree with in that it allows you to target a specific animal. That was the case for me last fall, but just because I used that camera I still didn’t fill that tag on the animal I was after. To many variables that goes into hunting to say this tool gives an unfair advantage

I live in Arizona. Its not just cell cameras that are banned for the purpose of taking game here. It is all trail cameras. I never have used cameras for hunting. Just not my thing. That really pissed me off though. The argument was that hunters checking cameras was disrupting the natural movement of animals in a detrimental way. That didn't hold water in my mind though. Hunters are not checking cameras often enough to negatively shape habits of animals, and if they are, they are seeing less animals and that, you would think, would cause them to pull their cameras, move on, and let the animals return to their normal habits. One of the commissioners had some telling remarks that I think betray the real reason they banned cameras. He said he was on an elk hunt and a guy going to check cameras ruined his sit. That's just part of the public hunting game though. The land is all of ours to use in any lawful way. I hate hunting being interrupted by side by sides. You know how I respond? Not by trying to ban side by sides, but by hunting in wilderness areas where they can not go. The whole thing struck me as an abuse of power by an official who thought he had more right to use public land than somebody else because he had a tag in his pocket.

Cell cameras are like using live scopes for fishing. Throw skill and technique out the window. My opinion is that cell cameras are making the commercialization of hunting easier. Every year folks who cant afford to lease land are getting bumped off by pay to play hunters. Hunters can now hunt multiple farms from their phone at the same time. With increasing hunter numbers and reduced access, I can see why states are are looking at this with a closer lens. I am curious if the states DNR is looking at this from a stand point of prioritizing their states citizens hunting over non residents? Who knows? Calling the ban or its idea of cell cameras a "cancer" is pretty cheap. I did like your other points about baiting, scents, high power firearms, and crossbows.

Since when did trail cameras become only for deer? I use trail cameras just to keep an eye on my land. It is nice to see what wildlife is around. It also gives me a way to see who is trespassing. This had to start with an anti-hunting group of some kind. This is nothing but a tool.

Cameras save more deer than they kill. Most folks w cams start picking kill bucks n let’s the rest walk. Plus people stay out of woods more waiting on a pic than being there hunting when the pic is taken.

No necessarily the most cams wins. What if you hunt multiple properties across multiple states. It’s not like people are putting them all on one property. Unfair advantage to pay to hunt group that have deep pockets. The average in state hunter is losing hunting ground because of all this technology and money involved. I am for some kind of restrictions on all technology drones and cameras included. One man’s opinion.

as a Iowa resident your chart shows when EHD started in Iowa - 2012 and 2019 being really bad so your argument is not invalid but lower numbers are actually coming from the EHD outbreaks which tend to kill more bucks then does .

Ahh regular cams that you're still basically blind till you go back in and pull the card is one thing.... Sitting and drinking coffee at 4.a.m. and watching 3 different stand sights in real time and getting minute by minute pictures telling you which sight is hot at the moment is a little over kill on my opinion. Some folks use them and love them... not for me. I don't want that big of a technological advance over a wild animal I'm hunting... I don't want to " water down" my skills in the woods in such a way....

If you look at the last couple bills the Iowa dnr has passed it appears they are trying to tie up any loose ends when it comes to out of state hunters. They passed the no out of state party hunting law now this cell camera/ public land band. Maybe there is a state agency that cares about age class and resident hunters 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

The only thing I think is unethical about cell cameras is the using real-time images and video in the act of hunting. If someone is checking the camera to see if a deer is near their stand as they walk up, or sitting on the couch and perimeter cameras notify you a deer is approaching so you move to the window with the 30/30. I dont think that is in the spirit of fair chase, but to me everything else is fine. Good stuff!
@TripleRwoods

I get that. But I don’t think that’s happening very often…. Either way the hunter still has to execute a good clean shot and get within shooting range. Thanks 👍🏻

This is what a slippery slope looks like. "Hunting" by its original legal definition was in the context of a commercial activity, as apposed to the right to gather food. When you allow a right to be turned into a privilege, you will always arrive at these places.

I have no problem with Iowa's new camera ban. Let's say you've been hunting a piece of public land for decades, and someone comes along & places a cellular trail camera on every other tree. That would irritate me. Iowa is simply stating cameras can't be left overnight on public land. As far as private land goes, I can get a pretty good inventory of what deer are on my property with a basic SD card trail camera, & Iowa is not taking that right away. People were harvesting deer long before trail cameras. I have no problem banning electronic aids like drones & cellular trail cameras during the hunting seasons. The line needs to be drawn somewhere.

I live in Iowa and I love that this ban passed. If you need to the minute updates on a buck to harvest him, you are not being an ethical hunter. Nor are you a talented hunter. Learn to use terrain advantage and read sign. I have no problem with regular trail cameras. Give the animals a chance!

@ryanfreeman9766

@@TripleRwoods You're comparing apples to oranges. A compound gives only a slight advantage(for most people) over a recurve. I have used both. With a compound I still only take shots under 25 yards. Recurve I was comfortable out to 20 yards while hunting. Knowing that a specific deer is in the area of where I hunt to the minute is WAY more advantageous than having to wait days or weeks. I hunt 1 hour from where I hunt.

@@TripleRwoods You talk about "blanketing" etc. Well you are blanketing the term "advantage". Cams are about Real Time Intelligence! Don't blanket a weapon of choice/season in with Real Time Intelligence. RTI is the most valuable asset known to man. Say you get one day to hunt. Two options. 1) Here's a gun, go anywhere, good luck. or 2) Here's a recurve, but there's a giant buck that'll be at this location at about this time. Which would you choose? Exactly.

Several issues concerning cell trail cameras on public property. I hunt public a lot, but also hunt private. FIRST PROBLEM: I think anyone that uses public property, for any reason, has the right to NOT be recorded, in real time, on PRIVATE cell cameras. This has nothing to do with hunting. We have a right to a certain amount of privacy while engaging in recreational activities on public property. When I think of hiking, hunting, etc. and the phrase, "get away from it all" comes to mine, that includes getting away from the creeper factor of private cell cameras on public lands. Some cell camera operators may claim they are not interested in what other people are doing on public, but their cameras are still recording it regardless. Some will have to admit, they are monitoring wildlife use, but they are also monitoring other hunters. SECOND PROBLEM: Hunters are placing cell cameras on public to "hold a hunting spot". Example: If I go in to an area to scout, hunt etc., and I see an area blanketed with cell cameras, I don't want to come back to that area, which is exactly what the camera owner wants. It becomes a race to put out cell cameras in the public hots spots so hunters will create "private, exclusive use" of an area of public property. The use of DRONES is also being addressed here in Kentucky. Hunters that hire a drone, or use their own drone to "locate an animal they have shot" are also engaged in scouting ALL DEER ACTIVITY, including other bucks in that area of public and OTHER HUNTERS/RECREATORS. I don't have a problem with cameras and drones on private, but there is still the potential for abuse of a technology that goes beyond "fair chase". Another thing I don't like is that someone from ANOTHER STATE can come to my state and monitor public land activity from THEIR STATE in REAL TIME. Just because a technology is available, it does not mean it is ethical to use it in all circumstances.
@TripleRwoods
@TripleRwoods 2 ай бұрын
I understand ur points. But you’re going to be on camera all the time now. The stop lights have cameras as your travel to your public land. Every gas station you drive by is recording you. The cell camera on public land is filming you much less. You’re still legally allowed to hunt anywhere even if a cell camera is up. I get the hesitation but laws and punishment shouldn’t be handed down because a person feels uncomfortable about the technology. The last part about potential dangers is a straw man argument. Everything had potential to be misused. Ur cell phone can break more laws than anything if used wrong. We don’t ban cell phones. Some for guns etc etc etc. just my 2 cents.
@trailandpursuit
@trailandpursuit 2 ай бұрын
Hate to break it to you, but your rights to privacy end as soon as you leave your property. Even when you're on your property you can't stop someone standing on public property taking pictures. We live in a world of cameras, they're everywhere. If you are in a public place, you can legally take pictures no matter if that's the woods, downtown, the street, the park etc. If you aren't doing anything illegal there is no reason think twice about your picture being taken, just keep walking. On public I always assume another hunter is using the area anyway so a camera doesn't change much. Honestly, I'll sometimes use their camera as a way to contact them and talk strategies and game plans so I can avoid bothering their hunt and vise versa.

Dam right am interested in other people on public land so my stuff doesn't get stolen.and yes I personally take pictures of license plates just so if my stuff come up missing I have a idea on who is a suspect.plus just last month I had a guy try and steal my camera and I was able to get out and get my camera back and confront him.this is why cellular trail Cameras is vary important on public land.
@justinadams159

in my opinion with cell cameras, being all over public land and people relying on them, I’ve shot more deer than I ever have because I don’t use cameras and I hunt sign and use my mind to think about where the deer will be now I don’t always have to hunt public land. I do have more than a few spots that I can go hunt private on, but only one of those spots is any big at all most of the spots that I have are literally a half an acre of trees or as big as maybe 15 acres. but I don’t put cameras out on any of my locations whether it’s public or private and I have a wall full of deer that I have mounted and I have a pile of horns from basket rack bucks I’ve shot too! I have never once shot a deer that I had on camera because I’ve never put a camera out! i’ve shot a buck on public land 10 minutes after a guy walked past me just because I stayed put
@Kurtdog63
@Kurtdog63 2 ай бұрын
@@justinadams159 I have not used trail cameras on public in years. They tend to get stolen or vandalized also. Because of public activity, patterning specific deer can be a crap shoot. It is best to hunt travel routes in heavy cover between bedding and feeding areas and harvest "random bucks" than try to target a specific buck with trail camera info because they are pressured and may get bumped out of your area at any given time.
