It's not so much she grew up like that I'm more inclined to say she grew up working to the bone for every penny made. I grew up around some Mexican families like that. They wouldn't take handouts or even gifts sometimes. Even if they were broke and you offered some cash just to help out no strings attatched. Theyd send onenof their kids to do work for it. When they did that id just have the kids chill and play video games with me. And when they went to leave I'd make up some chore I had them tell their parents they did. Pride is a powerful thing.

As a parent of newly adult kids, this can be hard. Everything has always flowed from parent to child, and money that comes back the other way just feels wrong. I get Ironmom's feelings.
@LaughingOrange4 ай бұрын
As a newly adult kid, it feels strange to spend money on my parents. For the last couple of Christmases, my siblings and I got our parents really nice gifts, price doesn't matter if it's good. This has resulted in some gifts that start to get "expensive", with the bill split among us kids. I know our parents spend more money on each of us than we do combined, but it still feels weird to spend a not insignificant amount of money on them.
@RubyRoks4 ай бұрын
Not so newly adult kid POV: I have SINCE CHILDHOOD told my parents that once i'm well enough off to take care of them, they won't have to pay another bill or buy anything with their own money to return the favor of doing their best to raise me. I meant it at age 3, i mean it at age near-30. I have a feeling your kid probably has at least some of this mindset.

Her mom is very respectful, but it sounds like she hasn't developed her mothering into a caretaker role yet. Mouse lives with disability and needs help sometimes. I think Mouse has gotten used to making large purchases for work expenses and the little things don't hit as hard as they used to. Her mom isn't in that space and she's probably waiting for the other foot to drop, since she's been around long enough to be called "old" and all this has been happening for less than five years. She probably wants to be sure that if it ends, it ends gracefully; her daughter will be okay.

@konaqua1224 ай бұрын
I learned this from an anime (I forgot which one) but is really on point with real life. When you give someone something, a favor or money, you NEED to get a proper compensation back. It doesn't matter how little, you NEED to give them a way or reason to compensate. That way, the person receiving the favor or money won't pity themselves. For example, my sister asked for my help with her project which took a long time, like 3 weeks irl. I really am fine with simply helping her but what do you think she would feel if she realized that affected my work and other stuff? So, what I did is to have her treat me for boba in exchange for that whole three weeks of helping her. That way, she would can tell herself "Well, I gave boba for this so it's kind of fair." This would be same with ironmouse situation. We all understand that since ironmouse earns a lot, her mom doesn't really need to pay her back. But to her mom, I think she would feel pitied (even though that was not true). Her mom is older and should be responsible for the bills or anything she wants and asking her kids for something kicks her pride a bit. What I think Ironmouse should do is to create a compensation for that to make her feel good herself, to think that she worked for that money she borrowed or ironmouse gave her. Maybe ironmouse should say something like, "You don't need to pay me back but can you help me with cleaning my collection for this weekend since i am busy?" I think her mom is feeling that helping her with the bank and stuff is not enough for that amount of money and she is indirectly wants her to give her more work/responsibility for her to feel that she earned the money. Fullmetal Alchemist: "Something cannot be created from nothing and that in order to create something, something of equal value must be exchanged and lost" By something, to this situation is the money, and the equal value her mom could provide is her time. doing the bank stuff must be too easy for the amount of money she is "borrowing" But that's just a theory, a self made theory....

I can understand how ironmom feels. Whenever I’m in a decently stable spot with my money is in need of some quick cash to pay a bill or something, I want to just give them what they need without asking them to pay me back since I won’t really be missing the money and because I care about them. This is a mistake however. This will make them feel belittled and like they are indebted with no way to repay you. Instead just tell them to pay you back whenever they can since you trust them. Family works differently though and especially with your situation I can see how her feeling like this would upset you. I don’t think how you are approaching this is wrong but I would suggest trying to give task or something from time to time in consideration of her feelings though I wouldn’t have this conversation with her, that would be very uncomfortable for you both.
