One thing people don't know or forget is that the French goalie Hugo Lloris is Harry Kane's teammate at club level (Tottenham Hotspurs) so scoring penalties against a player you train with week in and week out brings a whole new dimension to his missed penalty.

It's fascinating that FIFA can use this advanced VAR system to find that a guy is a millimeter offside, but can't seem to purchase a clock that can pause. I mean I get it when the game was played in the 1870s and teams couldn't afford to add a second hand to the stadium clock, but it's 2022. They have to have heard of the stopwatch by now.
@char6364

Stopping the clock incentivises advertisements which are rightly a cardinal sin in football broadcasts. It would also massively slow the game down and teams would exploit a stopped clock by pretending to be injured - giving themselves time to talk over tactics which would lead to the last 10 minutes of games taking 30 minutes to elapse like in the NBA. Nobody wants that.
@nifemi_o
@nifemi_o Жыл бұрын
Technology is not the issue mate, pausing the clock is not feasible in this sport. This isnt the nfl where "plays" can have defined start and stop points. If they did try to do that, football matches would probably go from 90 minutes to what, 5 hours? never gonna happen.

@@adilrahman1204 Except in-stadium advertising and TV advertising are obviously two very different things. There is a bit of an unwritten rule you grew up with when playing football, thatt the ref will allow a final push forward if the attack is promising in the final seconds of the game (such as a ball in the half of the opponent or a corner kick).
@ledferrelin
@ledferrelin Жыл бұрын
Any substitution is 30 seconds. Attending an injured player is at least 1 minute. That is the base of normal calculation of stoppage time. In any game in the second half is at least 3-4 minutes of stoppage time, but in this World Cup FIFA is trying to be more accurate in lost time inside a half.

One thing: there are reasons they allow the set play to happen. 1.The winning team will try to delay it being taken. 2. The referee may have to deal with some stuff in the penalty box. 3. There may be a delay in getting the ball. 4. Because the referee has blown for the set play before time is up, he will allow it to play out. 5. History: in the 1978 World Cup, Brazil needed to score a goal to reach the semi final (I think). They won a corner in the final seconds of the match. They took the corner and "scored", however the referee had blown for full time while the ball was in the air because time was up. The Brazilians were not impressed. The ref was Clive Thomas from UK, a known stickler for rigid interpretations of the rules. Letting the set play play out therefore avoids such controversy.

Games has a 4th referee outside the field that is in charge of the stopwatch. He will stop the watch every time there is a pause in the game for a foul. Then about 5 minutes before halftime and the second half he tells the referee how many more minutes to add.

The reason they leave it open until the end of the half is because they don't know how long certain moments of stoppage within the half are going to last. Some last only a fraction of a minute and play continues then there are other times where it lasts a few minutes. So they in review of the half add it all up to one number. As far as when stoppage time continues, it is when a team is in position to potentially score an important goal and time is extended to force the defending team to completely shut down that scoring opportunity, instead of just delaying it or simply hoping to get saved by the clock.

Man I hope this comment gets read two days later because I feel like I'm the only one frustrated by the concept of stoppage time in general. Why the clock can't just stop when play stops is something I simply can't understand why they won't change. And it's not even about it being up to the referee to blow the final whistle sometime within the minute or after the events of a set piece conclude, it's that I don't get what a stoppage is, period. The commentators for a USA game I watched mentioned several times how referees at the World Cup this year have been extra particular with stoppage times. I didn't notice a difference though watching their first game and in others, it never feels like they add enough time, so curiously, during the USA vs. Netherlands game, I timed the first half. One would think a stoppage should occur anytime the ball isn't in play, right? So I started a timer at kickoff and paused it for every penalty, injury, and set piece, then resumed it once play resumed. When the game clock hit 45 minutes, the amount of stoppage time should equal (or be close to) how much time is left until my clock reaches 45 minutes. The first half had one minute of added stoppage time, but my timer was barely over 29 minutes. They literally played a 30 minute half, not 45. I couldn't believe it, so I know what you say about the timing being mostly arbitrary has to be true. And that said, I challenge someone at Roku to do the same thing for the France vs. Argentina game and present their findings, it would be a good follow-up to this segment.
