I just finished replaying this game like two weeks ago. What a timing! And yeah, it really is a great game, but it's also ridiculously hard later on and sometimes frustrating, too. Especially acquiring all the platinum trophies, which is one of the hardest challenges in all of gaming, imho.

Those stages towards the end are impossible for me. Just not enough room for error, and the slightly loose controls drive me insane. Fun game, though.

the level near the end where you have to destroy the warehouses on either side of a set of train tracks and you can only cross over at certain points might be the most frustrating level in all of gaming. I beat it when I was 12 or 13 and there's zero chance I'd have the patience for it now.

“If you knock down buildings, it will be fun.” -Chris Stamper during Blast Corps’ development Notice how he said “it will be fun” not it “it will sell”. I wish we had more developers with this mindset today. Anyway, Blast Corps is great and one of my favorites on the N64.

Actually, many developers do that, but people like whining about the bad stuff more, so you hear the bad stuff a lot. Check out Brigador and Darkwood, former is the best "Things go boom" game of 2016 and latter the best Horror game of 2017. And the devs sacrificed a lot to get them made.

When you advance in the game you get some awesome weird titles. When you platinum every single stage incluiding the moon and all the planets you get a title that says " you can stop now". When i did it as a kid without internet access it felt incredible.

This game has one of the best difficulty curves ever. The first time you jump in the Backlash, it seems impossible, but by the end of the game you feel like a god whipping that thing around in low-g on the Moon. It's got a simple start and a skill ceiling that most modern games would kill for.

The one factor that makes Blast Corps age so well is that, as far as I'm aware, it's still unique to this day. I'm pretty sure no other game has ever used the concept of timed path clearing by demolition as the basis for an action puzzle game, or at least no major release that I've heard of (I'm sure there have been a couple of small indie titles that have done something like this. Even when it came out its uniqueness was its main selling point, and unless I'm very much mistake than is one aspect that has never changed.

When I got Blast Corps my friends were really divided by the game. Some loved it because of the carnage they could cause, some liked the strategic element of it, but weren't too fond of constantly crashing vehicles into buildings, and some just hated the game because there was no 2p mode and some levels railroaded you into doing exactly what the game wanted you to do or lose. So maybe decide foryourself which group you'd likely be in. I personally was one of the first group BTW.

If you love this game or are just curious about it I highly suggest checking out the AGDQ 2016 run. The games designer, Martin Wakeley, called in and did commentary and answered questions about how the game was made. It's really amazing stuff to hear, like how it was developed on the SGI machines and they had no idea what the final specs of the N64 were going to be, so it turned out they had to dial back the graphics a little bit in the end.

Is that even a fucking question? This game is a masterpiece. The audio, the visuals, the gameplay and the characters. The dialog made me cry. I've played this game twice already and both times I had a completely different experience. It's beautiful, and I will continue playing this game until the end of me. I don't just recommend this game, I'm telling you to play it. If you don't, you are missing out on the reason humans exist. Every single person should play this game. I will fight wars to make sure people can continue playing this game. I think this is the next step in human evolution. We will eventually all be plugged into a machine, like in the movie, "The Matrix", where this beautiful masterpiece will be our life. Every day, we will wake up in heaven. That soon will be the glorious reality, the reality we are meant to be in. Play ghis game right now. Enjoy it. Live it.

I remember reading that the big problem with early releases (or review copies) of Blast Corps was that they forgot to program an option to delete your saved game. So if you wanted to start a new game you had to open the cartridge and remove the save battery. I guess the patched it later.

Blast Corps was a great idea mixed with some solid gameplay, but I felt that it relied far too much on forcing you to use the more awkward vehicles for its challenge. The Sideswipe in particular shows up in a ton of the later levels and it's not fun to use.

Cartridge games are potentially more durable, allow for custom hardware additions, and load quicker. As memory got cheaper and larger, I feel that this was ultimately the right way to go with the progress of flash memory and SD card development. The Switch has cartridges, although it seems Nintendo should have designed more storage into the format.

It's still surprises me how many great games came out back in the 90s that don't actually have any sequels. Maybe Rare is afraid of making a new blast corps because despite how incredibly amazing Perfect Dark was in the N64 and how fast and improvement it was over GoldenEye when they released perfect dark zero on the Xbox 360 it didn't go so well.

Well, maybe it has a limited catalog. But the N64 has at least 15 timeless classics. 15 Sin and Punishment. 14 Kirby 64: the crystal shards 13 Golden eye/ Perfect(dated but worth checking nonetheless) 12 Castlevania Legacy of Darkness(not for everyone but it has a place in my heart) 11 Pokemon Snap 10 F-Zero X 09 Wave Race 08 Mario Kart 64 07 Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon 06 Star Fox 64 05 Smash 64 04 Banjo Kazooie 03 The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 02 Super Mario 64 Honorable mentions:Mario Party and Sports games. 01 The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. If I had to say which games aged the best in that era, it would have to be the 2D/2.5D games. There was so much miss opportunity to make sprite based graphics the best they have ever been in that era. While of course, there was a lot of games that use those graphics during that period, I feel like not enough did. I love Goemon's Great Adventure and Mischief Makers on the N64 and I wish there was more games like those on that console.
