Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the instrument was either a fife or a piccolo. Both instruments are about half the size of a flute and are higher in tonal pitch. The fife would seem appropriate for this performance seeing as the trilogy begins with the song, "Dixie" and the fife (or piccolo) was an instrument often used by the soldiers during the Civil War which was primarily a war of ideologies concerning the practice of slavery. Thematically, that instrument would have been a perfect choice.

You're right! That's Fire! I was a 16 year old girl in 1973 when I first saw Elvis in this Aloha from Hawaii, satellite special. I've been a fan ever since. At 65 years old now I just revisted Graceland in Dec 2022 and thanks to the Elvis Costume Museum I got to see first-hand that costume that he wore the first time I saw him perform on that broadcast in 1973. Yes, I stood right by that Costume & had my sister take my picture! The outfit is called The American Eagle; Red White & Blue version - white outfit with red & blue eagle across his chest GLORY GLORY HALLELUJAH !

@@stevedahlberg8680 I would think googling Elvis's band members. I know over time he had different members. From 1970 I believe on to the end he had a full band and Orchestra so there was strings, Woodwinds and brass. Plus great timpani. I played the flute all through high school and college and for many years at different events so I was always interested in this flute player and so I had research to find out who he was.

JD Sumner and The Stamps were the last male vocal group that toured with him... he always had a group of gospel singers that were men and then he had the soul singers which were the women, he wanted both gospel and soul. They were super good and they also recorded in the studio with him. A lot of times to just relax Elvis would just get with his groups and have a jam session and sing gospel

That instrument is a flute and it does add such the perfect touch at that emotional moment to transition into the final climax. And it is a wonderful and brilliant trilogy of three songs, a song from the South, a song of the North, and then a Caribbean slave lullaby that made its way to America and was also rejuvenated in the sixties as part of the Civil Rights Movement. He ties it all together so well with his performance. And some people will say that's just sweat, but I've definitely seen sometimes where his eyes tear up and I'm sure he has shed a bit of a tear or two here and there. Definitely I would think his eyes were tearing up during What Now My Love performance from this same Hawaii satellite show. He always had the two sets of backing vocalists, the Sweet Inspirations were the group of black women, and The Stamps Quartet with the amazing deep bass JD Souther for the male backing vocalists. Elvis tended to briefly put the spotlight on and feature other aspects of his band at various points. The the guitar player, the backing vocalists, the flute player in this case, Ronnie Tutt the drummer and others.

This was a musical representation of the Civil War: a song for the South, North, and the African-American with the triumphant preservation of the Union at the end. Elvis was a child of the South who combined white and black elements in his music and who believed in an America of brotherhood. The song has pretense and some critics said Elvis, with all he represents, was the only one who could pull it off. Humble yet charismatic.

The trilogy begins with the great Southern anthem "Dixieland," then segues beautifully into the American classic that bridges the North & South with "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," & then gently into a slave's lullaby in "All My Trials" concluding with the Battle Hymn again. Powerful? Still gives me chills. It was flawless. Watch how Elvis directs the orchestra from the stage & that final sustained note was supernatural. I don't know any great rock singer who could've performed this trilogy like Elvis. Shon -- great job -- your comments are excellent.

In 1962 I was in the 2nd or 3rd grade. We lived out in the country in Louisiana. I had to ride the bus to and from school. In the afternoon on the way home we would start singing these songs. Sometimes one of us kids would start singing and sometimes the driver would ask us if we wanted to sing. The bus would drop me off at the end of a dirt road about a 1/4-mile from our home. As I walked home I could hear my fellow scholars continuing to sing. The sound of the singing would gradually fade as the bus continued down that dusty country road on its way to drop off the other kids. It is one of the fondest memories of my childhood.

The Stamps were a constant in his band :) And the Inspirations (ladies) were always present too. He is likely sweating...and not crying. But nonetheless Elvis certainly seemed to feel lyrics very deeply!!! Xx Thanks for yet another awesome reaction!!

IT was sweat and tears...Elvis had a twin brother Jesse that was born before him that was still born and I think he thinks about him while singing this song... I have seen some concert footage where Elvis had tears flowing during his Gospel songs.

To me his best music is anything in the gospel realm. The instrument you like is the flute. Much love from Texas ❤️🤍💙

Elvis was an American patriot. He was drafted into the US Army at the hi-light😂 of his musical career. He made the rank of Sergeant in the tank corps. 🫡🇺🇸❤️

Yeah the lady that sang backup for Elvis is the Sweet Inspiration's and the man that sang back up for Elvis are called The Jordanaire's and basically Elvis got the 2 quartets to join his band and together they made Elvis's background group

That's not the Jordanaires! It's JD Sumner and The Stamps Quartet.
