This absolutely was a tribute to MLK. Make no mistake, Elvis was a champion for civil rights and a powerful voice in the 50s and 60s that was so needed.

I read in a book about Elvis' life that he and James Brown, yes that James Brown became such close friends that when Elvis' funeral was set, James Brown arrived early and was the first guest. After the service was over and everyone had left, Mr. Brown sat down next to Elvis' casket and cried like a baby for so long security had to gently pick him up and escort him back to his car. That's how much James Brown loved Elvis. Very touching story.

His family was so poor his father wrote a bad check for food. He went to jail, and Elvis and his mom became homeless. They ended up in the projects. Growing up, he was mocked endlessly. He never forgot. He found solitude going to a black church where he first sang and felt at home. He never, ever forgot his roots

When Elvis died, I was with my mother at a Drs appointment. She was with the Dr, and I was in the waiting room. They announced it over the speakers that Elvis had died. Everyone in the waiting room burst out crying. I was shocked. When we left, I asked my mother. "Who is Elvis Presley?" She said, "The best-looking man that ever lived." So, for years I thought that was what he was famous for.

It was Elvis’ reaction to the news of Kennedy’s assassination that lead to the creation of the song "If I Can Dream," a tribute song to King, featuring direct quotes from the Civil Rights leader. In the spring of '68, Elvis was working on his upcoming TV special, "Elvis." After seeing the news about Kennedy's death on TV, Elvis spent an entire night with the show's director, Steve Binder, and his friends, talking about the assassinations and Elvis' wishes for the world. The conversation was heartfelt and honest, and Binder believed Elvis had an important message for the country. Binder then went to the show's Musical Director Billy Goldenberg and songwriter Earl Brown and told them about the discussion. He wanted a powerful, meaningful song that would close out the TV special. Because the special was slated to air in December, the producers and Elvis' manager, Col. Tom Parker, had planned to end the show with a Christmas song, but Binder had other ideas. It wasn't long before "If I Can Dream" was born

MLK was assassinated only miles from Elvis' house in Memphis only a month and a half before Elvis recorded this song to close his 1968 TV special. The lyric for the song was directly taken from MLKs' "I Have A Dream" speech that he gave in from of the Lincoln monument in 1963. I still get a tear or two in my eyes when ever I hear this.

Elvis’s manager Colonel Tom Parker and NBC did not want him to sing this song. They wanted him to end the show with a Christmas song. He said no I’m doing this.

Elvis WORKED ** WITH BLACK SONGWRITERS **. In particular, Otis Blackwell, Little Richard, Fats Domino, Chuck Berry, among a few others. Elvis paid for SONG RIGHTS, which went to each black artist. 2. Elvis then sent ROYALTY CHECKS to the artist based on HIS sales. 3. Because Elvis CREDITED EACH ARTIST, on EACH ALBUM, black artists' ALBUM SALES skyrocketed when Elvis recorded one of their songs. Elvis opened up THREE REVENUE STREAMS for black artists when almost NO ONE ELSE WAS. There absolutely were white artists and executives that were stealing black music, but Elvis was NOT in that group. Elvis gave an injection to black music and musicians, that is why they willingly worked with Elvis, and CREDITED ELVIS for doing JUST THAT. Examples: Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Otis Blackwell, Fats Domino, Jackie Wilson. Mahalia Jackson. Cissy Houston. James Brown. Isaac Hayes. Al Green. They all credited and put mad respect on Elvis' name. Elvis came FROM NOTHING. Born in a shack with no running water or electricity. Twin brother died at birth and was buried in a SHOEBOX. So poor his black friend Sam Bell called him the poorest of the poor. Yet his ability to interpret and arrange a song by merging three distinct genres, R&B, Country and Gospel was revolutionary. Elvis was an ARRANGER as much as he was a lead vocalist and dancer. He was a creator of stage presentations, of clothing attire, and the look of a rock and roll star. He was a crossover youth symbol for many young white, black and Hispanic people in the 1950s, no matter their race or creed, and always went against the order of older elites of the day. Elvis was a youth rebel, who dressed with Italian and Cuban collar shirts, wide-legged, pleated trousers, blousons , long raised Pompadour hairstyle, sharp colors, denim and leather jackets, and always looked youthful and fresh. Always dressed on point. All eyes were on Elvis. And the older people hated the look and would threaten to arrest him and even kill him for his singing and dancing. Death threats became the norm until the day he died. Elvis was a strong supporter of civil rights, hiring black musicians and staff members when almost noone was at the time, even during the race riots of the 1960s. His voice and action is dearly missed as it could really help in today's atmosphere.

Elvis was certainly a special kindred spirit whose candle will never die...he was raised right by his Mother.

He was and will always be the GOAT, not just for his performances, but because of his personality. One of the many times he performed at the Astrodome in Houston, he was told his backup singers could not perform because they were black. He informed the management that if his singers could not perform, then he wouldn't be performing either, needless to say they changed their minds. He was way ahead of his time.

He had a lot of soul! He sang with a lot of passion in his voice! He believed in equality for everyone.

The more our new generations get into music like Elvis the better. Top tier musical performance right there. Elvis was inducted into 5 different Halls of Fame: Rock&Roll, Country, Rockabilly, Gospel, and R&B. He also holds the record for the most platinum records for singles and albums (nationally, I don't know about globally) so you know nobody is gonna top him. Not everything is gonna hit, some of his movie songs are kinda lackluster, but the 68 Special is fire. His gospel music is powerful too, if you're inclined, listen to Bridge Over Troubled Water or Amazing Grace.

Not exactly a place where wealthy popular stars live. Not only that but Martin Luther King was murdered 15 minutes from Graceland, Elvis’ home in Memphis. Elvis learned to sing in the choir of a predominately Black Church. I watched an old interview with the Pastor of that church - he said that after 6 weeks with Elvis singing they had to put speakers out in the front lawn.

A lot of people accused Elvis of stealing content from the Black Community and people like Quincy Jones and Mary J Blige, accused him of being racist. Those people are disgusting for perpetuating such lies. For that reason I have boycotted them my whole life. The black women and men who sang with him who he refused to perform without even when he was told they were not welcome have said the exact opposite.

Elvis's story is a sad story these two songs that gave you chills is what he wanted to sing. He was inspired by the music where he grew up blues clubs and gospel. I am so sad that we barely got to hear Elvis's story. He loved everyone and grew up in a time that this was so important to hear. He loved everyone. He wanted to sing gospel soul and blues and it just wasn't ok back then and for these reasons he never traveled the world They caged and controlled him and we were robbed of the beautiful wonderful passionate messages this man had inside. 😢but he made the ones he did get out impossible to ignore! This song was about the death of MLK. Elvis's people told him not to do it. It would be detrimental to his career. He told them to shove it and did it anyways. It's still relevant today. Absolute classic. Elvis at his best. Beautiful, talented, generous, caring, humanitarian, unashamed, unapologetic, unabashed, always did what he thought was right. He treated everyone the same. I grew up listening to Elvis. He was very big influence on me growing up. I grew up in an area where racism was very much a thing. But I never bought into all that crap. I made friends with some of the black kids who lived not far from me. But that back then got me in trouble. I am so happy things are changing now. We are a mixed family now, which couldn't have happened back then. I have several beautiful black nieces and nephews I love dearly. But yes Elvis was a force in change and in bringing the messages that needed taught.

Just watch this and I'm laughing my ass off at the ending, you are funny man. But yeah I love how you are getting it. And I would also say, about 1 and 3 or 1 and four reactors cutoff that turns out to be historic mic drop moment at the end. He did not say thank you thank you very much but you can hear him say sometimes but once you hear him say it in a live performance you will realize that it is humble and not the bullshit that impersonators make it out to be. But at the end of this it's the last show of the thing and he is emotionally exhausted and it's a historic mic drop moment. Apparently after this he goes backstage curls up in a ball and cries for hours. The assassination of dr. King only happened in his hometown of Memphis it only happened a short distance from where he lived. And he was devastated. You've got to check out some of his fun stuff though, there is black-and-white footage from him a long time earlier because he got going at age 20 in like 1955 or really quite before that when he was 19. He just took off like a late freight as some of the black people said back then. And I know you will probably get a lot of requests for this, but check out is 1970 live in Las Vegas version with him in the big white jumpsuit doing Suspicious Minds which had been a huge radio hit for him shortly before. This is mindblowing. And you will see how diverse is band is and how well they get along.
