Is it possible to have too many log splitters? Recently I got some monster red oak rounds so it's time to get started splitting those down to manageable sizes. They are too large for the Split-Fire 2265 and maybe too large for the Split-Fire 3404. Time to get to work and figure out the solution.

I could watch this all day. It takes me back to my childhood when my dad and grandfather would split wood for the winter. I can smell the wood and the smoke from the fire they always had burning.

Those were some big rounds alright - but they are also some of the most productive sections! Most people don’t have the equipment to handle them - but if you do - they make some good firewood in my opinion.

Those were some manly sized hunks of red oak for sure brother! Muscle building day working with those things! I personally would've knocked them down smaller with the maul to a normal sized log piece and go at it from there. I love swinging the maul just for that, not all the way down. That's too much swinging, Be safe brother!

Yes they were or I guess they still are since they are still sitting back in the log yard. I will stick with noodling them down. I’m just not a big fan of mauls and wedges anymore. Take care, Ben.

I noodle those big ones with 2 vertical cuts off center to make a thick slab in the middle. Leave a little bit of wood to keep the three pieces together then roll and cut so you get 6 or 9 pieces. That will make that stringy heart wood into smaller pieces.

Halving and quartering big oak rounds like that normally isn't too hard with the Fiskars if you let it dry out a bit first and split on natural cracks. Noodling works but is still a lot of wrestling with the saw. Cleaving pieces off also works, but you need the aim and accuracy of Buckin to do it.
@OGAOutdoors
@OGAOutdoors 2 жыл бұрын

You’re absolutely right. 30” or bigger need noodled. They will flat wear you out wrestling them around. What did you tease about firewood business?? And, no, to answer your title question. You can’t have too many log splitters (as long as they are useful). Enjoy that 70 degree weather! Catch ya on the next one!

Ok so I’m not enjoying the 70 degree weather I want some cold. I haven’t sold anything to really speak of the entire month of December. Chance of tornadoes again later today. I’m just not sure where I want to go with firewood business it’s a different world down here. It’s like Brad @NRF said in his last video. This is a hobby and when it’s not fun time to move on. I’m not going to give the stuff away seems like everyone around here thinks it’s 1977. Heck when the cold gets here it’ll be a different story. Enough of me rambling take care, Ben.

Why not use a steel splitting wedge & 10# sledge? My splitter does have a vertical position; but I still prefer pounding a steel wedge at the edge of the round & then use my digging bar to finish prying it apart.

I've never split wood that big. I know when wood gets up to about 24'' it is not much fun to deal with. If that round was 40'' and 16'' long it had 11cuft in it Now that is stacked with no air so a real world number would be slightly higher. Splitting that big wood took much longer than what it did for your splitter wars entry. I think 12'' wood is about the perfect size.
@OGAOutdoors
@OGAOutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
Yes these things will make a lot. I have enough for 10 rounds when all split should be about 1/2 a FC short of a cord. The round on the splitter was only about 36” the largest one is about 40”. I agree with you about the smaller rounds being the way to go but you have to work with what you have. I liked doing the noodling thing then I was able to use either splitter and make quick work out of them. Take care, Ben.

Hey Ben, that big round had to weigh at least 4 Bills, I’m always surprised how a sledge and a few wedges can quickly breakdown big rounds, and you don’t have to go Ape s... with the sledge, one hand tap, tap get the wedge started, bang don’t take much, usually. Hang in there the cold is coming! Happy New Year to you and your family
