@@magnusmagnuson2862I had used the Lansky system for almost 8 years straight since I was 17. Best system of the time but you could only use their hones and then I upgraded to the KME. Much better quality hones and overall consistency in edges but you were still only limited to that kind of product. The ability to use such a wide variety of not just diamond hones but also soaking stones and splash and go stones is such a better option

It's better in a simple way. If you're super ocd like me about having your blade sharpened at specific angles, a fixed angle system only maintains that angle for the part of the blade right in front of the clamp. The further left or right you move, the shallower the angle gets. It's not noticeable enough on small blades but on longer blades, you'll definitely see it in the thickness of the edge changing. Also it makes things weird if you want to freehand grind the same knives down the line because it will create a double bevel towards the extremities.

Great review, just ordered one as I’ve always wanted an angled system for all the stones I already own. I too, would like all the improvements you suggested, but it certainly won’t cost $120 then. I’ve owned a lot of sharpening systems and think this design is the best as it allowes the use of multiple stones people already own. You’re not limited to what the manufacturer says you can use.

I've had the pro model for 6 months now. It doesn't have the play in the swivel like the version you are demonstrating. Vertical rod more solid as well. Mine also came with the rotating dual clamp. More versatile. The pro allows you to use stones in lengths of 6 to 10 inches and variable widths. As someone who owns a TSProf Pro Hunter, Hapstone V8, and a KME, I find this usefull on some projects. Especially sinse I have a large collection of full size bench stones. Great at starting a bevel and/or reprofiling, then finish up with freehand. I use angle cube on both the stone and the guide rod when switching stones. I bet A person could set the guide rod at a certain angle to do convex edges. I've been wanting to try that. Not sure why Mark didn't send you the pro straight up. He was suppose to send DBK a sample several months ago for a review but I've never seen it on their channel. If you want Jerad, I can ship you my copy for a review. Interested in your thoughts. Peace.

Seems like a pretty cool idea that needs some work and some adjustments. I could see how this could be helpful for some folks that want more of a freehand style experience to learn but don’t quite have the skills yet. Better stones, better materials for the arms and joints, protection for the blade. It’s got potential to be helpful for some people I’m sure but needs improvement.

My friend and I bought from Mark at the same time, we got the red, heavy base that does not move when in use. It came with a water stone with 2 grits. The looseness at the magnetic head on mine was from the bolt at the top bottoming out, solved with a metric flat washer under the head of the bolt. Did the same treatment to the pivot parts also, allows parts to be snugged up a little. I tried my dollar tree knife on my friend's sharpener and was not pleased with how it worked. I will most likely sell mine "as new" and build a guided sharpener instead. The lifting force generated when sharpening is caused by the knife not being mounted directly under the swivel point of the holder, IMHO.

Been looking at this system and others from them for over a year since you should be able to use whatever stones you like but they still seem to be in the prototype stage, not really meant for end users. Hope they settle on a or a few designs and up the quality of the materials somewhat. I think it could be a great product!

I'm pretty good at sharpening now cuz of you, will these stones work with the work sharp adapter? Thank you hope to hear back 💯🤙🔥

My issue with the hapstone T1 is that it has an infinite amount of adjustments and you have the screw the threads perfectly on both sides to get the angle perfect most likely having to use an angle cube. I’m checking the DMT aligner clamp. I think it has 7 adjustments but at least you’d know that you’re getting the same angle on both sides and seems to be a lot faster.

The downside of it is you have to keep the rod on the mount parralel to the stone surface. Otherwise youll be creating a convex edge as your knive is move away and back from the "not so fixed" pivot point. But if ther rod would be straight and bend in the near of knive cleam or the knive cclamp would be attached to the rod at a certain angle You would not have any problem with not keeping the constant angle. Still that only goes for straight edges where knive belly would be an issue with every fixed or "not so fixed" sharpening system.

This is cool. I wanted to ask, you really make it look simple since you’re quite the sharpener, Is their room to really Fug up your edge if you don’t have a steady hand or ar a newbie… I’m an ok sharpener and understand the whole process of sharpening. I’m just curious if like someone really sucked at freehand sharpening if this system will take out all of the human inconsistencies a poor sharpener may have? Thanks, I really like these types of videos…. P.S. Did you know that prior to your videos the most POS Mytatso kitchen knife with a hole in it advertises…. I've seen similar systems online but the ones I saw had a clamp installed vs the magnets and could take different size stones. The magnets would be better for tiny knives like slipjoints and such but the clamp looked more stable with these way it was made. With how loose everything is right now I'd imagine it would get much worse over time due to the materials used on this one. Idea is good but quality Seems lacking in this model at least and the lack of adjustable stone holder means you are locked into buying only from them (depending on size). Thanks for the great vid and keep making sharp things fun and enjoyable.

Freehand is truly not that hard. Everyone sucks at first. You just have to dive in, stick with it, and suffer through the first few attempts like we all do. You will very quickly get exponentially better. If you're intimidated just minimize all the variables you can initially, like starting with a friendly steel and a straight edge utility blade shape. Cannot recommend large bench stones enough for learning. The bigger the better. It is much easier to precisely control your movements with two hands on the knife and you want as much of the edge length in constant contact with the stone as possible. The stability makes it *much* easier to feel and hold your angle.

Ya ever a have a steel that seems to react differently than all other steels? My evil nemesis is 154cm, I could imagine using this method on my Ontatio SK5 Blackbird 10 years ago and throwing everything in the trash under knife rage 😂 I'm a huge fan of carbon steel esp 10 Years ago so me and stainless didn't get along to well. That 154cm on that knife is the craziest steel I've ever worked with. I have reprofiled 100s of knives and delt with lots of steels and nothing is like 154cm. ...Well atleat the 154cm on that specific knife. I've owned two and both were identical to sharpen. It always develops the smallest micro wire bur and fools users into a falls sense of accomplishment .. "Come and see, LOOK UPON THE SHARPEST KNIFE DAD HAD EVER MADE, BEHOLD ITS GLORY MY FAMILY " then ya proceed to try and cut paper again and all that joy leaves your body as your kids laugh and your wife says "was that supposed to be sharp" 😡 LOL I've honed my skills with sharpening and profiling now so the knife is easy for me. Ya just have to strop that steel aggressively with green compound and it will begin to sing. I used to hate that knife but now I love it and its the only knife I haven't gotten rid of.

Oh God no! That is just entirely too clunky. I have an OG Worksharp system that works well but rarely gets used. I have a diamond plate and a few stones for free hand. I can't freehand very well nor can I roll a good joint. What I can do is reach in the drawer and pull out my Spyderco Triangle Sharpmaker and in seconds I am laying down an accurate edge (as long as I want a 20° or 30° angle).

Another quick thought. Being a mechanic in a prior life I generally hated my tools picking up a magnetic charge. Seems to me you are magnetizing your blade slapping it on that big magnet. Now the blade will attract the shavings when you sharpen and some may eventually find their way into the pivot bearings. Just a thought.

I like it for setting a 10dps transition bevel, but that also can be done by hand. For setting a 15dps microbevel edge its ONLY viable if its fast at apexing, so being able to work both sides without reclamping. Otherwise it can be done freehand with 10 light alternating passes on a 1k. The massive mistake people do is only sharpening on one angle, which is way too much surface / steel volume for fast apexing / touchups.

I'm not a fan of magnets near my blades, once they get magnetized, all the little metal filings cling to the edge making it hard to see when i get a burr... Everytime I think I have a bur, I wipe the filings off & its back to the stone. Makes me say bad words really loud. 🧲+🔪= 🤬
Now THIS is entertainment! 🤣
