Is there a Fix for Chrysler Dodge 3.5 Famous Rocker Arm "Side to Side" Play?

I'm about to replace these lifters, But, I'm concerned about the side to side play on the Rocker Shafts. Do they matter? And is there a Fix for it? (Besides Buying a Whole New/Refurbished set, Of course)

The pedestal's wear out because they are a softer material than the rocker arms. The assembly gets plenty of lubrication so this is not the issue. The only permanent fix would be having the pedestals machined out of steel or just use stainless steel shim washers between the pedestals and the rocker arms. Mcmaster- Carr has the correct size.--- .75" ID x 1.125" OD x (almost any thickness) The assembly can be taken apart using a dowel removal tool.

The rockers eat into the pillars. They made a new designed assembly supposed to reduce wear, but I lost part number, came to hunt for the Mopar part number to search again.. those 'lifters' that are tight are still pumped up. The side to side play you need to be concerned with is when the rockers eat into the pillars that hold them in place, then they bind, clatter, etc..

they say they eat into pillars mainly due to a pin used to lock shaft in place to align with oiling holes in heads fails and they starve of oil.

Those lashes are supposed to move. It's the tight ones that are bad. The ones with more movement are good

Good/bad to see more people are dealing with this one problem... It over time wear on parts & engine in traffic, idling and warming up on cold mornings, etc. Cause the gaps and low oil supply. On another car on Motor trend they drilled holes and taped a extra oil feed to the heads..After replacing the oil pump.

The new ones still have that slight play, the plungers were stiff on the old ones but not the new ones. The slight play must be normal.. it’s not rattling but it does have a certain sound they make,. I just replaced them and the upper intake manifold.,

I just replaced the entire cylinder head few days ago as I couldn’t find the rocker arm assembly here in West Africa. This problem is a proper pain in the butt. I love my 300 so much but I’m thinking of retiring that mobile machine for good.

I have the Same Issue and a thought came to mind !?? what if a Brass or Titanium Bushing washer was put in Place to take up slack for the side to side play ?? Just a thought

The "tight" lifters are the bad ones. They should be able to move. They are hydraulic.

@@phigo4kins I stand corrected on this design after having to work with mine. The lifters should pump up under load from the oil pressure, but it seems the soft ones are the bad ones as the check ball gets stuck and they don't stay pumped up. I really do not like this design.

@@JohnDoe-ml8ru That's What I Thought the Squeeshy Ones Are Bad, They Are not Supposed to be Squeeshable Like that. But, I Agree With you, These Shouldn't Be A Failure Point On These Engines. When I Go Back to That Working On that Engine, I think I will Just go Ahead and Order New Rocker Arm Set and not go the Replacement Route Like I was Planning To. Cos I Can Already Tell It Won't Be Worth it.

Very bad the motor has a oiling issue theres a oil cooler on those motors take all the lines off and blow them out or delete them I've had the same problem and I've been a mechanic for 32 years and certified the same amount if you want further advice you can reach me at 906-two 7 five- 9 three 7 nine Jesse

I Found the How-To on A Forum I think Magnum or Charger Forum. Just do a Google search, you'll find it. It's not hard to find. You will need a bunch of little Annoying sockets and tools to get it off.

Thanks for your reply. I heated them up I found a screw to screw down into the dowls and use a vise grips and a hammer to knock them out.
