The video doesn't elaborate, but the reason why this is, is muscle memory. The fat guys are used to moving their weight around, and when you lose that weight, it messes ever-so-slightly with their mechanics, which in baseball is everything.

That's the kind of paradox about aesthetics vs function. I mean just look at power lifters, they look like fat guys not bodybuilders/models/roided up marvel actors. What looks "strong" or "athletic" may not necessarily be so. Mainly why Prince Fielder's nude photoshoot with ESPN is really interesting. He looks a little odd because yeah he's pretty chubby and he's got a gut, but his legs are jacked. Another reminder that a lot of power comes from the legs.

Before the 1990s, there were some overweight baseball players. That has been a thing of the past for a few decades now. Since the early 1990s, baseball players have understood the benefits of weight-training and year-round conditioning. ....This video creator really likes to exaggerate.

Pitchers no longer have to pitch nine innings. They now use four or more pitchesr per game. One to go at least five innings, a middle innings reliever, and a right and left handed closer. As a result pitchers don’t have to be in good enough shape to have stamina. Teams would rather they throw 20 pitches as hard as they can and that means they don’t have to be in shape. Power hitters have long been on the heavier side, and the designated hitter now in both leagues means they don’t have to field or move quickly And baseball has always been more about eye hand coordination more than athleticism. The real athletic s is in the base running and fielding.

But that was always my argument about why baseball and soccer are so amazing. For the most part, size doesn’t matter. I’m 5’10, 165 pounds at my most. Now in football, that’s problematic. But baseball and soccer… it’s not so much of a problem. I mean there are exceptions, like going up for a header against someone who’s 6’4… but then again, he might get me on that, but I’ll dribble around him next time. Maybe I can’t hit a ball 500 feet, BUT I was once recorded running 19 mph. So, if that ball hits the ground, I’m GOING. 😂.

sports illustrated has a bit of a mixed reputation. certain sports in certain eras are some of the best sports journalism and it's still iconic to this day (lebron chosen one cover), but that was mostly due to having amazing staff in those positions, such as Grant Wahl who wrote the Chosen One story. SI editorial has always been meh to my knowledge though

I don’t know if having more mass makes you better at baseball. It kind of seems that way, but I don’t think that is the case. Nobody really knows the answer though. Sports Science hasn’t even really come to a conclusion. It’s really weird because you have someone like Francisco Lindor, who is a shorter, slim, muscular guy who is a gold glove level defender and smashes the ball. But, then you have Bartolo Colon who is the opposite of all of that but it somehow just as athletic. I’ll say this. Being bigger doesn’t make you a better hitter or throw harder…..but it somehow doesn’t hurt you either.
@Kevin-mx8tl
@Kevin-mx8tl 4 ай бұрын
Bartolo Colon was highlighted in the video. Yeah, he's fat but that doesn't mean he's out of shape. He posts videos on Instagram of him working out and he's not slouching it. I've met him in person when he was in the Dominican Republic. He works out and trains with local players. I think the key to being effective is finding the balance between being overweight and athletic. It's definitely working for Bartolo since he's set to play in the newly established Baseball United league in the Middle East at age 50.

I'm from Toronto. Apparently this trend does not apply to the Jays, witness the case of Alex Manoah. Fantastic debut season, last year came in training camp looking like a whale and had an absolutely horrible season. Just remember, you only feel bad for a few days, and its no worse than having a cold. Nobody ever says "This cold, I just can't do it anymore." They just push through, and if you can just push through a few days of no smoking, you will have beaten 80% of the fight. Also, everytime you finished a smoke, you technically stopped smoking. Knowing what you know about smoking, why would you start again?

Weight definitely helps in certain aspects of the game. I’ve hardly swung a bat or thrown a ball in the last 8 years since I stopped playing baseball in high school, but almost entirely due to the fact that I have gone from 145 lbs to 190 in that span of time, I can hit a ball further and throw faster than I could at any point in high school. To be fair, I’ll almost certainly pull a muscle after a certain number of swings and my shoulder is only good for maybe 30 throws before it starts to hurt, but my point still stands, it sort of pays to be fat in baseball.

Babe Ruth is the undisputed baseball GOAT and he was a fat guy that lived on steak Whisky and cigars. The thing is that the mental side of baseball is huge. Maybe the most important aspect when it comes to success. If player is at his most comfortable while eating what he likes and playing a position that doesn't require speed, he's probably going to be successful.

"Sports Illustrated" was most famous for its annual "Swimsuit issue" in which supermodels would be photographed in the tropics. But it was pretty much the only sports weekly sports in the U.S. except for the "Sporting News," which covers only baseball. Then a couple years ago "SI" went "woke," it celebrated Colin Kaepernick and other anti-National Anthem activists, published at least two Swimsuit issues with models who were "transwomen" (men who'd had sex change operations), then late last year was caught printing articles written entirely by Generative A.I. under a false name, posing as a human, and now "SI" is about to fold and end publication entirely. "Sports Illustrated" had gotten so bad, few people will miss it.

This video is just evidence of what misrepresenting data looks like. @ 7:00 He shows a list with 9 players who are "technically overweight", but only 2 out of those 9 would actually be considered fat, all the others are tall and/or buff. Being fat doesn't help you in Baseball, having more mass can, but weight from muscle will always be more beneficial than weight from fat. It's also worth noting that the 2 fat guys from the list were both 1st basemen and DHs, the least valuable defensive positions.
Wait for the last one! 👀
