Isiah Thomas Scores Pistons' Last 19 Points in Final Playoff Game

May 3, 1992 - The writing was on the wall. The New York Knicks were younger, hungrier, meaner. The Pistons were old, tired, disjointed. Still, as Madison Square Garden attempted to single-handily will the Knicks to victory in Game 5 of their first round series against Detroit, Isiah Thomas made one last stand.
Thomas scored 21 points in the fourth quarter-including his team's final 19-but it wasn't enough. As he rained in the final 3-pointer of an illustrious playoff career, the Garden's collective euphoria was already five minutes deep. The Knicks' 94-87 victory set up the first entry of their own multi-year postseason rivalry with the Chicago Bulls.
Finishing with 31 points, 10 rebounds, and 6 assists in the loss, Thomas' final clutch performance came in vain, though it provided one final reminder as to what made him such a special player in the first place.

@Ryan Van Dusen The Pistons had more mileage on their bodies than almost everyone else in the East (Bird, Parish, McHale) but they weren't that old. 1992 was not the first entry between the Bulls and Knicks during that era (1989 Conference Semifinals, 1991 First Round).
@Swove2204
@Swove2204 3 жыл бұрын
True words. On the other hand, while technically not that old, Isiah Thomas, Bill Laimbeer, Mark Aguirre, Orlando Woolridge, and Darrell Walker were all out of the league two years later. As it pertains to the Knicks, I felt the Riley iteration was a bit of a different beast than whatever Rick Pitino had going on there, even if much of the personnel remained.
@bubufubu
@bubufubu 3 жыл бұрын
@@Swove2204 Thomas had an extremely unfortunate injury. Had that not occurred, he would have played into the late 90's. He was intent on going until his body forced him out. And he was so talented and confident that he would have continued to put up good numbers. I'll give you Laimbeer and Aguirre. I don't remember the circumstances for Woolridge and Walker but they weren't a member of any of the squads between '87 and '91. The '92 Knicks played tougher under Riley. Mason and McDaniel were certainly difference makers. Starks stepping up after Cheeks got traded. But I'm not going to give Ewing et al a pass and separate their recent losses to Chicago. They managed to beat the Celtics in 1990 and I'm sure the losses in '89 and '91 were on their minds. Those playoffs games (along with all the regular season matchups) played a big part in their rivalry.

The Knicks won this series because Ewing, McDaniel and Oakley crushed Lambieer, Rodman and Salley on the offensive glass. The Knicks outrebounded the Pistons on the offensive end 92-54 in 5 games. You shouldn't lose a series where you get 40 extra second-chance shots.

Isiah could have played this hard in the first 3 quarters, could have changed the momentum and helped the Pistons win - if he could do all that then when the game was out of hand, he could do that when the game mattered... Detroit could have had this game but Mark Aguirre should have started and Thomas could have played harder sooner... no scoring for the Pistons; no VJ, no Edwards, no wins.
@jerryalexander8803

Being that the Knicks were up by like 12 with only 4 minutes to go I'm pretty their defense wasn't as tight as it was for the first 3 quarters.. 🤷🏾‍♂️
@plainsimple244
@plainsimple244 3 жыл бұрын
@@jerryalexander8803 Just look at aggression and control... forget the opponent, look at great players in how they control the pace, clock, and momentum of a game: from the opening tip Thomas went after scoring and dictated the game to help Detroit lose... you didn't see Dumars, Woolridge, or Aguirre used often, that's how Thomas messed up this game for his team through his own selfishness. Why? Because they knew Chuck Daly was the Olympic Team coach and they weren't about to push themselves to win in the 1991-92 season while Daly got all the credit... he already took credit for those two rings which was all Isiah's leadership putting that squad together... now they wanted Daly to take credit for what Thomas built... Isiah wasn't having it so he did his own thing in game 5.... Even Chuck Daly said he felt Thomas had more power than he did in Detroit; so those two went back-and-forth and there was no reason for it... Daly wanted Thomas to shake hands and it was Jack McClouskey and Thomas who put that team together giving the team what it needed... look at what Daly did in NJersey and Orlando? Nothing. That Pistons team was all Thomas' leadership along with Laimbeer controlling everything for the rest of the guys to get in line of how they do things.

Are we sure Laimbeer is congratulating the Knicks?
@Swove2204
@Swove2204 Жыл бұрын
I'd say we're relatively sure. It was documented at the time that he said, '"Beat them,'" regarding the Chicago Bulls. '"Play them the way you played us." The New York Times later reported: "It turned out that, after five grueling games, the Pistons had little dislike or resentment for the Knicks. They were proud to shake their hands of fellow gladiators, real men who were eager to trade elbows, shoves and stares. The Pistons could at least relate to the Knicks, unlike the jet-setting, high-flying Jordan, his tongue dangling at outclassed opponents below. After losing Game 5 on Sunday, the Pistons acted as if they'd been given a whipping by kid brothers who'd grown up bigger and stronger than them. "We created a style of play and kind of got beat by the style we advocated ourselves," said Thomas. "The Knicks were too big and physical."

Laimbeer was congratulating Riley too. They had been going head to head in 2 consecutive NBA Finals from 88 to 89 as Riley was The Lakers coach. The Pistons knew they were sore losers in 1991, 92 they showed class in losing.
